I spent just over R10k for power cage, olympic bar + EZ bar, 120KG of rubberised tri grip plates, bench.

For lifting heavy at home alone a power cage is the only safe way to go.

Ok so I went the other route and purchased Trojan gear, so far its holding up and I opted for standard weights due to the way cheaper per KG rate.

The trick is to buy second hand and refurbish, unfortunately weight prices peak this time of year with all the resolutions going around, I picked up awesome deals around mid year once those resolutions failed hard.

Gumtree/OLX and Pawn Shops are your friends, this is what they gave me :

Gumtree :
Power rack with 80kgs weights - R1800
Bench with 87.5kg weights - R1000
Recently picked up 90kgs assorted weights at R6kg

Pawn shops :
Dumbells with spin locks and assorted small weights - R180
Barbell and EZ bar - R200
A Kettlebell and ab wheel - R100

I thought it was too good to be true, got most of my info off of Mr. Price Sports.

My gym has the exact EZ curl bar as me though and mine was very cheap, like R300 cheap. Dunno what that says about my gym though heh

Do you guys have any fitness related goals for 2014? People generally suggest to keep them to yourself and you'll be more likely to achieve them, but whatever, I am pretty determined. I guess mine would be:

  • 60%-70% BW Dip
  • 200kg+ Sumo DL
  • Muscle up
  • Not dropping a 20kg plate on my big toe again

So spill the beans, maybe we can reflect back at the end of 2014 :)

Squat 100KG atg 3x5

Bench press 70KG 3x5 <- may be a little too ambitious but what the hell
Be able to do 3 sets of 10 pullups unassisted

I started gymming today after a break since before Christmas. During that time the gym was also closed on the days that I could and wanted to gym.

Anyway, here's a pic.

Which is more conducive to building big arms? Pushing exercises (i.e. bench and dips) or pulling exercises?

Or are both required? My thinking is doing the above will take care of the goal of bigger arms. Am I losing out on not having a purely arm day, i.e. a triceps and biceps day?

You need both, but pushing will help for bigger arms. The biggest muscles in your arms are the triceps, and they work most when you do push exercises. That said, don't neglect the biceps and/or pull exercises. You need some sort of a balance, because the opposite muscles in a exercise helps you balance and control the movement.

As for having a specific arm day, only needed if you do a 4-5 split routine. Otherwise what I do in some of my programs, on the day I work chest, I will add in tricep exercises at the end. On the day I work back, I will add in bicep exercises at the end.

If you dont do specific arm day, they will still grow, because you still need those muscles when you work the bigger muscles like chest and back, the arms just dont work as much as they would on a arm specific day, so they still grow, just perhaps slower. The problem is, if you do have an arms day, you need to rest them before you can do chest or back again, which is when you then focus on legs on the day after arms.

My goal: Bigger bis to match my tris, bigger/stronger hamstrings because that's what's limiting my deadlifts, 1RM 150KG benchpress at under 85KG bodyweight. Amped!

150kg bench is insane man. Hope you get it :D

The other day when the gym was almost empty, I quickly tried a couple bench presses.

Let me just say, I'm glad the gym was empty.

It's going to take a couple of months of pushups at home before I will tackle that at the gym again.

That's not a bad start, but the best way to prepare your body for an exercise, is to do that exercise.
Also, 20kg barbell should be easier to lift via bench press than a push-up, unless you one of the few skinny people.

December has been awful on my body :P

Picked up 3.2Kg's... I am however now doing a 5 day split with 40 minutes of cardio to start each day.

I have to force myself :|

Also the fat burner I use gives a substantial energy burst which helps - Muscle Tech - Hydroxycut elite pro

you should be seeing massive results from all the cardio though in terms of leaning out?

imo fat burners are a bunch of crap and it is more mental
