That is the next step yes. Will probably have to get a belt because I'm useless at trying to keep a dumbbell between my feet. Tried it with leg raises one time and almost killed the dog who was strolling underneath.
Although, there are probably variations of pullups you can do to make them harder. Maybe check out Frank Medrano or one of those other callisthenic nutters :p

I've got a garden cottage at the back of my place that will be going empty soon and I'm weighing up the options of training at home in there. I went to Sportsmans Warehouse and Mr Price Sport to price the free weights and just for a 20kg plate it's R500 so I'm not even going to consider that, on Gumtree and OLX there are lots of second hand weights for sale. Then you either have to build or purchase a decent squat rack, buy benches, leg equipment, bars, weights, etc. suddenly the R89/pm I'm paying through Discovery for gym looks more attractive (so do the hotties at the gym). Then there is the commitment issue of will you actually gym at home if it's easier to sit on the couch.. I dunno so much

I have family responsibilities at home that keep me from going to a gym. So it was never an option for me.

And I actually appreciate the fact that when I put down that final rep I can walk into my home seconds later.

But yeah the initial investment is pricey and I am limited to free weight and bodyweight exercises.

Yeah, the initial outlay is pricey, but pays off in the long term. My initial setup is now 10-years old, long since paid for and I've saved a killing on gym fees. Then there is the unmatched convenience aspect. I do need a new squat/bench press rack though as I my original setup is now at the maximum weight load and I don't want to get hurt by a collapsing bench.

In terms of percentages, how much of your body weight can you lift? Out of curiosity I done a few quick calculations and I came up with these figures;

Bench: 82.9% of my body weight
Squat: 75.7% of my body weight
Bent over barbell rows: 57.1% of my body weight
Standing barbell press: 50% of my body weight
Barbell curls: 42.9% of my body weight
* Do not yet have the space/equipment to dead lift efficiently.

I've read before that a target should be to bench, squat and pull (chin ups) your own body weight at the least.

Squad 125%
Bench 120%
Bent over barbell rows 90%
Barbell curls 41.3%
Military Barbell Press 44%
Tricep Rope pull down 79%

@thestaggy, you want to aim for Novice, the Intermediate, etc...

edit: Pointless me posting my percentages, as I've averaged (at max) twice a month going to gym for the last few months. Right now I am posibly in the Novice range. These figures are 1RM and I don't know what my one rep maxes are currently.

edit2: Interesting to note that they expect your power to mass ratio to be much better the lighter you are! A 60kg Novice bench presser is expected to push 95% of his body weight whereas a 100kg Novice is only required to push 82.5% of bodyweight!

( I woud have enjoyed a bodybuilding comp if it was still like in to 70's and 80's the old classic physiques.

Don't really approve of today's bodies.

Amen!

Go scope out the talent

You guys are lucky if you have these women in your gym. The ones I only see use the 1kg dumbbells, do some stuff on the medicine balls and hen go jog or spin. Flat asses and skinny legs... :(

Yea I get what you're saying and you can also add on as you go along once you have got the basics covered, I fortunately live close to 3 different gym's and I have got some free time to get there so I won't explore the home gym unless I really have to but I admit it would be nice to be able to work out at home though.

Aah but they'll get there eventually if they keep up the hard work. I've got one blonde in the gym I go to who's thighs are the size of my waist and she wears tiny shorts, she really is attractive in a weird kinda way. I haven't asked her but I'm damn sure she competes.

They won't get there using 1kg dumbbells, jogging and spinning...

Ain't that the truth! Don't you think it's funny how the girls always say I don't want to weight train because I don't want to get too big? Ok so maybe the girls don't know that they aren't going to get 'big' from weight training and that's not their fault if they're looking in from the outside. All the girls I know that weight train look 10 times better than any of the girls that do spinning class.
