I weigh about 56kg and 1.72m tall, yes I am very skinny. Hit the Gym last year for about 2 months before I injured my shoulder badly in a separate sporting incident. Want to get back into it this year. Tired of being so thin. Before I start gym again do you guys think I should gain weight first? Are there any online diets I should look at or just follow the ones mentioned in the first couple of pages of the thread?

Get a beginners program and follow it, and don't feel pressurised to lift heavy weight at the expense of bad form. If u aren't sure whether u are fully recovered from your shoulder injury, then be very careful and keep it light when it comes to shoulder exercises.

Watch scooby1961's channel for some good advice.

Advice For Hardgainers

Do u have a gym membership currently?
EDIT: Pick a program, and stick to it if it's a good one. Consistency is the main thing that will make u grow, and of course nutrition. Eating the right stuff. Diet is 70% of growing muscle. Enough sleep is NB too!!! A good protein shake to supplement you, etc... Creatine can come later on once u have the basics sorted out.

EDIT2: Just reread Tamelane's first post on this thread. Good solid advice in there. Just make sure u don't injure yourself so don't lift heavy until your form is good!! My 2 cents worth.

Thanks ryan411. Havent joined gym this year, my shoulder has only started to feel better so I think I will make a plan soon. Was thinking of building up strength first and a bit more weight first, I have started the 100 push up program.

To the other guys, no I am not vegetarian. :p

ok, just don't equate gaining "weight" to having strength. I have a friend who is about 1.77m tall and he barely weighs 62kg, so he is very thin, extremely low body body fat, but he is stronger than shorter and heavier me :p Doing the right strength exercises should go hand in hand with eating enough to gain strength and grow ur muscles.

Ratty, eat goddammit! Gymming isn't going to get you looking good if you are not eating enough. You will just be burning more calories and staying scrawny unless you eat double what you eat now.

Trust me I know. I was very skinny when I starting doing weights. I thought I just 'had a fast metabolism' or was a 'hard gainer' until I learnt how to eat properly. I picked up 20kg of good mass in just over my first 2 years of gymming and kept the same body fat. Now I just need to get my lazy ass back in gym. Also had a shoulder injury and now very unfit :(

Sensorei, that is potentially dangerous advice unless u tell him what to eat :p Eating the wrong stuff at the wrong frequency might just give him a pot belly!

Very true. But any 5'8" man who is 56kg and wants to pick up weight should be doing their own research and preferably consult a dietician. Ratty should be on a bodybuilding forum looking for diet advice not the local geek forum (myBB) lol.

Depends.... have you seen what some body builders eat? Eats not easy hitting 5000 calories a day.

Hey, Im pretty much an alleged hardgainer. Im still a newb with my knowledge.
But Ive been having great results with changing my diet alone. Im a doing some serious eating, healthy eating. And about 2-3 hours of gym a week! only compound exercises and no supplements.
If i hit a block I will look into supplements but otherwise im spending my budget on more food :)
