This. Most of the time they walk around like they own the place, and are generally not friendly to people other than their clientele.

The guy must be a douche in the gym and out of it.I;ve met some really helpful trainers in JHB and got loads of advice and i never paid. Some guys are there just for working with their client and have a stuff everyone else attitude and some guys are there to represent the gym, help everyone out etc, regardless of their level.

True :o

Guess I just don't like douchbaggery in the gym, no matter who it comes from.

I am finding that since September the gym has become rather full, and i expect it to get much busier in Jan. Busier gyms mean people need to abide by basic gym etiquette. These are a couple of things really bugging me:

1. Supersetting - while its a great way to work out, individuals are hogging two machines at once - sure should be reserved for non peak hours
2. Abusing the squat rack - this should be kept for squats only. Deadlifts and bicep curls etc can be done elsewhere which another bar
3. Not drying off - this applies to machines and changing rooms. On machines wipe off your sweat when done. In the change rooms, make you you dry yourself before leaving the pool area or shower.
4. Packing you weights after you done with them. This also means dont keep 3 set of different weights because you going to eventually use all three

What else would make going to gym easier with the new year fast approaching.

I've never used the changing room at my gym other than to pee or take a dump so I've never encountered any excessive pools of sweat, but judging by the number of old men walking around naked I can only imagine what kind of wet pools are lying around oh god.

There's only 2 things that peeve me off at gym

1) When people talk to me with my headphones in and expect me to know what they're saying. I'm socially awkward so I don't mind them talking to me, I just never know how to react to anything anyone says to me.

2) People using two machines/benches at once, BUT THEY ARE NOWHERE TO BE SEEN.

brb walking to a bench, someone runs over from halfwway across the gym, 'brooo im usssiinnn daaaat' Walk to the machine next to it, 'I'm using that'.

Bleh. I'm over-exaggerating ofc but still.

One thing I like about my gym though is that the personal trainers are rarely ever there and if they are, it's because they are working out. I love watching some of them, cause they do some really interesting variations of exercises.

And they're all massive :O

I'm sure mostly roided up to size

Man I laugh at some peoples so called 'variations'. Saw two kids yesterday lying on the floor on their backs at the cable crossover machine doing bicep curls. Really? and seeing the awkward positions some of the ladies get themselves into on the vibroshape things is hilarious!

We have a regular at Canal Walk who benches in the squat rack - yip - benches, lies on the floor, and uses the catch section of the rack.

And I saw I guy doing pullups on the lat pull down earlier this year...

Heh, can't say I've ever seen that. I've wanted to do a Floor Press before though, but never do cause it looks ridiculous.

Wow, that actually sounds like it could work hahaha (using the catch bars), you wouldn't need a spotter at least :P

Well - your elbows can't go lower than the floor, and the bars are usually at least knee high, so you pretty much have limited range.

Yeah I am always jealous when I look at the overseas guys home gyms, which have the power racks, where they can set up safety bars just above your chest, for bench press. Perfect way to go for new goals without needing a spotter.

Doing curls lying on the floor is a waste of the crossover machine. Why are people so dead set on curling in every way possible? Arm size is from triceps o_0

But that said, I let people do whatever they want to do, if they want to pay gym membership to do stupid ****, and look stupid while doing it, that is their prerogative I guess. I value my own time and money enough that I'll rather research a little and do what works guaranteed.

Oh yes, didn't visualize it that way :d

I'd love that. Couldn't someone just design some form of catch bar that you can move around? Like a separate unit that is adjustable.

Like the side pillars of that bench, just separate and with a really wide/stable bottom so the impact of the weight doesn't knock it over.

brb enrolling in engineering school only to find what I'm suggesting is breaking physics.

Sure, but then you get a knob that tries to do his whole session on the cables while there's a line longer than the great wall of China waiting to use them. This is not acceptable. Yes, you were there first, doesn't mean you own the damn thing now.

And seriously... VA need to up their game. They're constantly on this "drive" to get more people to sign up, but they haven't improved schit at my gym in 5 years. In fact, there are less adjustable benches because on of them broke (with me doing DB presses on it).

They don't bother to replace broken gear, can't be bothered to increase floor space. It's a nightmare.

It used to be only Mondays were kind of busy, now everyday my gym is like a bathhouse at the Ganjees. And for some reason (maybe I'm just noticing it now) no one knows how to train properly, spends more time texting their mothers than actually doing anything, and have no etiquette whatsoever.

VA have also recently upped their fees, and their gyms are in a garbage state. PF is a lot better. I'm considering a move.

Just saw a notification that my membership on Vitality is increasing from R133 to R184 pm (38%) from January 2014.

"This allows us to reinvest in your club through regular maintenance, new equipment, and professional staff." - if only - you hardly see any of that. Don't recall the last time I saw staff on the weights floor in Century City. (besides when they pack away **** and disappear.

Anyone know what a normal premier membership at VA is?

Yeah I was a little shocked by the R133 -> R184 increase as well...

But I do actually make use of the permier membership.

Sometimes go to VA Gardens, its close to work, so during lunch.
Sometimes go to VA Durbanville, usually when I am in the area.
Else I go to VA Tygervalley which is closest to home.

Oh rarely go to VA Menlyn, when visiting the folks in Pretoria.

Meh, choices =/

Is that just for Century City VA or is it countrywide. I have the countrywide membership and my new fee is R224.

R183 is for members on the old scheme, the new scheme you only get up to 80% discount if you go to gym a lot, if you go less it drops down to 50% discount or something like that.

I am still on the free scheme, so do not pay as long as I go X times in the rolling window. It is a good motivation to get me in the gym.

I'm on that too - I'm trying to find out the difference in costs between the new scheme, old scheme, and outright paying for gym access.

As far as I understand GYM access will always be free as long as you don't miss the requirements on the rolling window, then Vitality fee of R100 odd rand normally goes up yearly.

But I believe gym is still 100% if you are on the scheme from years back.
