over the past year i have lost probably more than 50% of my strength and can feel i lost size as well from lacking time and motivation, i find that when i get to gym lately i half arse it, need to get myself going again and eating properly.

any suggestions for a simple plan to get me motivated again? I am guessing that suggestions would be 5 x 5 but surprise me :p also any suggestions on high protein bulking foods / shakes / smoothies that one could make cheaply?

Find a training partner who is serious about his stuff. A good training partner that can push you beyond failure is the best motivation you can get.

You need to find a reason, to make you want to go. A training partner is great, until that partner stops, and then you have a big problem, your motivation will be gone too. I actually tried to get my GF to go, and she definitely wanted to, except she is not with Discovery like me, so that obviously complicates things, not to mention, the joining fee is ridiculous, and we have more important things to spend that money on right now.

I had training partners but they eventually became lazy and gave up. My GF wants to come to gym with me now but she won't train with me, she wont want to do weights etc.

they should have a system at the gym for guys looking for training partners.

I'm in the same boat. Currently training in a home gym, but I would join a gym if I could find a dedicated training partner.

For the JHB based guys - Chrome is having a clearance sale at their main store in Isando, Kempton Park (In Store ONLY)

Look around in the gym for someone who is more or less the same size and lifts more or less the same as you. Go to him, strike some small talk, discuss supps, juice, training, nutrition whatever, just get to know the guy. When you feel confident enough, ask him if he's looking for a training partner. If not, rinse&repeat.

I should make a guide on how to pick up training partners in the gym :P.

And for the love of peace, do not train with your gf. I can give you countless reasons why a training partner > gf.

How many of these ripped gym guys use steroids? I have a feeling it is a disproportionate amount.

I have for years without issue - way better than any training partner.

Way better than training with guys who think the point of a spot is to deadlift the weight off them when they bench.

Did you ever have a serious partner? I agree, a gf is way better than those beginners trying to lift the weight for you - but no gf can replace a serious partner, who is on par with you in terms of size, strength and knowledge.

I guess it differs from person to person - a light, fit guy wouldn't have a problem when training with his gf, they train to be fit and gain a bit of lean muscle together or any similar scenario. On the opposite, and let me put myself as an example here - currently I'm training with a 250 pound black gorilla, the guy is an absolute beast. He can spot me perfectly, he eats a ton ( which motivates me to eat a lot as well ), he is stronger than me - which pushes me to lift more, and he has a very serious attitude when it comes to training - which changes my attitude as well. No gf can ever do the same for me.

As far I can guess, OP wants to gain size, and for that a serious training partner can never be replaced by your gf.

Training partners. No homo.

lol same :p where abouts? i go to the protea gym on trichard road as it is much cheaper and quieter than the gyms like virgin or planet fitness.

What are their monthly subs?
VA or PF would normally work out cheaper via Discovery Vitality.

yeah i had a really serious partner at one stage, it was awesome. my GF wouldn't be able to spot me really even with my strength lose i suppose.

R250 p/m

the thing is for me I have no reason to have vitality, if you add the price of vitality with the reduced sub it prob comes to around what i am paying anyway, and those gyms are generally over crowded anyway.

err.. yes - I did - considerably stronger than me, and still thinking the weight should be deadlifted off of him. Just about everyone who asks you for a spot seems to expect that - they get a bit of a surprise when I don't touch the bar until they're turning blue.

With regards to my wife spotting me, she has no problem doing so when I was benching 140kg - you do not need to be strong to spot someone - that defeats the purpose. (and I'm not a "light fit guy" - I'm 6.2", 110kg.

She only ever had a problem with dumbbells, but that solved by passing one at a time.

Each to their own, but as soon as I need a spotter that's required to make what I'm lifting more than maximum of 20kg lighter, I'm going to heavy.

So much this.

Agree whole heartedly.

Ok, going to start incorpoerating 531 training program, since my current program is very nicely structured in the same way. :)

Anyone else here tried it? I am currently using a very basterdised version of 5x5 for awhile (months), but the 531 seems much better suited to my current program, and less volume than the 5x5.
