So I started going to gym again this year after a year off and have managed to lose most of the excess fat and thinking of getting back on some things again. Last time i was using uhm.. usn fast grow but i noticed it added some fat too hence i was wondering what people suggest. I am slenderish and don't eat a lot of protein in diet etc so will definitely need something like last time again + etc What you guys suggest?

Go for a high % protein suppliment - one with 78% or more protien - SA Suppliments pure whey is one... since you obvously get enough carbs in your diet...

Anyone here tried Reflex Instant Whey yet ?

I was at clicks today and they only had USN  and Reflex. I bought the Reflex whey as it was the same price as the USN tub, but its a UK brand. I got the vanilla flavour and it tastes delicious.

Thanks for a very entertaining read. I've seen some decent weights posted earlier in this thread but I was wondering if there are some strongmen, powerlifters or weightlifters on here. If not, do any of you train for strength?

Wow, I was just about to ask for advice on this. Considering this is called the 'bodybuilders' thread I doubt there are too many here who more concerned about their strength than how they look but I may be generalising.

I've just started the StrongLifts-5x5 course so we'll see how that goes over the next few months. Anyone here done this before?

Haven't tried 5x5 yet but a few guys at our gym made good gains on it. Me, I'm more of a 1x1 guy; I like lifting big weights. :)

So let's say you're doing squats and Monday you dropped 180kgs (is this possible?). How much do you add on today to make sure you get to that muscle fatigue level? I mean with a couple of sets you start a bit lower than the previous time at the gym and then work the last set to fatigue. Am I making sense?

I've been training Westside style for about ten years now. This requires you to max out once a week on upper body and once a week on lower body. This is very hard on the CNS so you have to continually change your max lift every week in order to give the CNS time to recover.

Not really but I am considering it. It's a balancing act trying to maintain form. I have got to the stage where I want to start one rep max sets combined with some general low rep sets (max 4-5) - go through a month or two then back to normal routine. I believe it's an awesome way to up your strength and your overall workout goes up a notch. I reckon you need to be really good on form to do this since it's not easy to find that sweet spot after one set of killer weight. Its easy to shortcut or injure yourself.

Yeah used to do powerlifting but currently slowly trying to start to get back into it.
Westside can be a nice way to train but I honestly believe that for clean users it's not really a feasible way to excercise. There is just not enough time to recover sufficiently. In any case, pretty much all the westside guys use gear.

Yeah, I agree about Westside being very hard on the body, especially the CNS, which takes a constant beating. Still, I've been making consistent gains in both strength and size using a modified Westside template for just on 10 years now. I wouldn't train any other way as long as it keeps working for me. Having said that, there's a lot that a powerlifter like me can learn from bodybuilders, especially in terms of dieting.

Yeah, bodybuilders own dieting, but we own strength :p

Indeed so. But there are notable exceptions. I have seen a few very strong bodybuilders in my time. David Cooks is a case in point (although it could be argued that he is actually a strongman turned bodybuilder).

I mainly train strength, but not for competing in competitions, etc. Deadlift currently at 260Kg, Squat 210Kg, but my benchpress is a bit of an embarrassment, 130Kg, sometimes 140Kg depending on how I feel that day. I don't use a weightbelt at all, and I despise gripping straps. I only use knee wraps for squatting 140Kg and up, because I do sub-parallel squats, and I use pine resin to prevent my hands from sweating when I do deadlifts.

Those are nice numbers you've got there, especially your deadlift is not too shabby at all. I would recommend that you get a good powerlifting belt, though. If anything it's just far safer using a belt on squats and DLs and it will improve on those already good numbers to boot.

I have used a belt for a long time, but it feels as if it's sort of preventing me from breathing properly or something, it makes me get very tired quickly. I do much better without it, and it is also good training for the stabilizing core muscles. I guess this depends from person to person.

Have you got a proper powerlifting belt or one of those despicable ones that the bodybuilders always walk around with that's narrow in front and wide in the back?
