Hi guys

Let me ask the experts. It's time for me to get back in shape, I have no space at home, so it's going to a public gym for me.

So:

I live in the Edgemead area, so:

1. Planet Fitness or Virgin Active or is there a decent private gym in the area? (area meaning within 10km or so)
2. What is the best deal I can get at these 3 options, respectively, barring any medical aid membership benefits?
3. Any other info you think might be useful.
4. Budget is a consideration for me.

Cheers

J

If someone would like gain muscle, you will have to concentrate on compound movements. As previously mentioned, squats. That's one. A beginner's routine should be Bench press, shoulder press, pullups and squats. That would get you into things. After you've done that for roughly 2 - 3 months and you feel good, you can then start on the isolation exercises like flys, one arm curls, cable pushdown, reverse curls etc. You'need to patient.....very,very,very patient...

BUT YOUR DIET IS STILL 60% OF THE WHOLE THING! THE REST IS 25% TRAINING 15% SLEEPING

Im sure this was insinuated, but even once you move out of the 'beginner' stage of gym, compound movements are still just as important.... all that really changes is your routine and what/how many you do in each set.

The part about dieting is really, REALLY important though. My brother entered the IFBB KZN comps and to see the change he went through by eating "properly" was phenomenal!! Sure that was all in aid of trimming/reducing body fat, but the point remains. Eat properly and you've done half the work.

I got me the iron gym!!!!!!!

R 249 bucks well spent, i just assembled but of course i have quit smoking so the install was basically do not go mental hahaha. Something so easy took me bloody 20 minutes to get it together haha.

Did about 5 minutes which is not long but omg my entire body is sore :D

This thing is amazing!!!!!!! have yet to try the sit ups and stomach, i think this guy may have been trying to have sex it or something

Im kinda still on holiday:D

Also... my lower back... dam my lower back

how do I know when its strong enough for a certain weight and how do you know when to stop(I was working on my upper back when I hurt it)

My question is not related to bodybuilding (lord, no!!) but to exercise in general and this seems to be the most active thread on the topic in question.

I used to gym (resistance training and light hand weights) about 3 x times a week and ran 2 x days a week. I have developed somewhat of an addiction to road running - I now run 5 x times a week and have sort of shoved the gymming aside - I go once or twice during the weekends.

Should I rather try to get the balance back to 50/50 running/gymming? Will running help with toning the same way gymming did, or is it plain cardio?

Thanks

blunomore, what r u trying to tone? I don't think running will negate the need to workout in the gym. Just google 'why women should do resistance training', I'm sure you will find some good reasons? :) Sorry, I would find u some links but I am currently on local only bandwidth :p

I have even seen a couple of articles/videos saying how excessive marathon type running will increase your cortisol levels and cause your body to store more fat!

Just overall toning.

Yes, I know resistance is good for women for various reasons relating to osteoporosis, muscle density, etc, but I guess I was secretly hoping running would cover that for me :)

Nah I rate Evox products aren't too bad at all. Exercise hard and you should see some good results :)

Ya, I think Evox's products are the better of USN, Biogen, and maybe even MuscleScience's. The best of the SA products IMO.

Sorry for the double post above....sometimes happens when I'm posting on my mobile. The reason I like Evox more, is that firstly it tastes better, and secondly it keeps longer because you get a lot more servings out, so it works out cheaper.
I went to M-Chem's nutrition/supplements section, and boy, I was a bit lost in there. It's rediculous how many different stuff there are. I knew I wanted whey protein, so took the Evox one. It was either that or Evoxc Mega Grow, but that contains a lot of carbs and I think it is more for active people that want some serious weight gain (such as rugby players). I was looking for Evox Ethyl Ester Creatine, but only USN had those (tablets) but very expensive. As I am a bit weary of creatine, I saw the Evox Fusion Creatine Delivery System, which is a powder with lots of Vitamins and other stuff coupled with a lesses amount of monohydrate creatine than the case of pure creatine, but apparently the delivery system gets 5g of creatine per serving delivered (have no idea how much that is). Here it is: http://www.evox.co.za/All-Products/Energy/FUSION-CREATINE.aspx. I just saw the Ethyl Ester one, seem like it is better than the one I got. It is called Cold Fusion http://www.evox.co.za/All-Products/test/COLD-FUSION.aspx. What is the difference, other that the first being monohydrate and the second ethyl ester? I see they put the one I got under Energy supplements and the Cold Fusion one under Muscle Gaining?

Just a general question:

When in the gym, as far as cardio is concerned, is there a "best/most effective" piece of equipment - stationery bike, treadmill, elliptical trainer, rowing machine or does it not matter which of these you use?

The rowing machine is the best all-round piece of equipment but it's good to mix it up.

If the can swim it's the best form of cardio.

Thanks for the link. I know this is a "Bodybuilders" thread, but I would probably stop around level 2 in that pyramid LOL. Just well muscled and toned, not as ripped as level 3. Somewhere in between at most.

The rowing machine is the best all-round piece of equipment but it's good to mix it up.

I find that I get a better cardio workout (as in breathing heavier, getting tired more quickly) for the same time when jogging on the treadmill than when cycling. When I cycle I use the spinning bikes, it makes me sweat a lot but I'm not breathing that heavily nor am I as tired as from jogging. But it definately works the legs more. Rowing....good workout but I struggle to do 10 minutes...also if you plan on doing dumbell/barbell presses after that you will feel that it worked your forearms. That elliptical ski-machine thing is just the most uncomfortable thing for me....

Somehow it feels to me as if the rowing machine does not do as much for the legs as the other machines, e.g. bike.

Oh, someone that know, just check it this that I bought actually does have creatine in and will it help with muscle gaining? I saw the Cold Fusion one and now I am confused, also because it is listed under "energy" http://www.evox.co.za/All-Products/E...-CREATINE.aspx

I feel i get much more of an upper body workout on the rowing machine then anything else. Maybe my technique is incorrect???
