ok so yeah this is my 1st post here ...i want to tone and build a little ...like very little muscle

i dont want huge arms lol

so was thinking of getting me those small "girly" dumbells ...4kg max

can they work or should i invest in 2 10kgs

Virgin Active with Discovery, think its around R135.

Thats flippen cheap. I was paying that in Queenstown for some dodgy gym.
My problem lies in that I work away from my home city and have a 1yr to help look after as well as soon as I wake up and get back from work, then still prepare supper.
That's why I have gone the Home Gym route, I can do most exercises that a Gym can offer and have tons of plates to work with.

But I love working out with weights and so have to go with the home gym system, having a 4 car garage helps as well :), I would love to get back to a gym though, someday.

Most home gyms in SA have issues handling more than 100/120kg of plates though...

I just go in the morning, get up 4:50, head to gym, home by 7pm in the evenings - prepare food, etc - bed at around 11pm - repeat.

I have a Trojan something or other, only really use the "weights" part for lat pulldowns so doubt it'll go over 100kgs.

I have around 4 barbell bars that seem very strong, they were bought in the 80's, looks like decent steel compared to the newer bars of today.
Having kid's drains you of energy, maybe when my son get's older I can make a plan for a gym.
I'm a regular reader of MuscleMag International and most guys there swear solely by Free weights and leave machines for "other additional" lifting.
Just need to work on my diet as it's not good enough at present.

Yeh.. but you need a bench for bench pressing... and is soon as you go over 100kg you have the chance of it collapsing on you...

What gyms do you guys go to and what do you pay per month?

i go to a local private gym, R210 per month

hmm perhaps look at getting the adjustable kits, in the beginning you gain strength quick

without discovery vitality it is crazy expensive

doesn't vitality cost something like R200 per month though? on top of discovery's already siff pricing and service? :D

Mine says R135 on my bank statement?

I'm with Discovery Life though, not sure if it makes a difference.

but thats the thing i dont want to really pick up alot muscle on arms ...just enough to fill a t lol

yeah cos seen game has the 12kh set for like r300

2*1kg, 2*2 and 2*3

so you only pay 1 x R135 in total, not R135 for vitality and R135 for virgin?

yeah but think about it, that is only 2 x 6kg weights in the end of the day assuming they include 2 of the bars (remember the bar weighs about a kg)

you will rocket through that quick and want to go up.

remember you can use them to do triceps, shoulders, back, biceps, chest etc

and dont worry you wont get big fast, it takes guys long with proper eating and rest and solid training

Yip - just the one debit order I can see - unless the other part is part of my Life debit order.

(I have a national debit order)

rofl you talking about samr1wp? :D

Yip - its a serious question- I can't see what a guy would want with 2kg pink dumbbells.

yeah 2kg dumbbells would be a total waste for him, he is a dude :) that is why i suggest an adjustable one so he can use them for a while, just a pain to adjust between different excercises. i would say get ones you can adjust between say 5-12/15 kg on each side as when he starts he will say curl 5kg-7kg on each side but if he wants to do chest he can push say 10-12kg a side and like 10-15kg a side for back row etc

*figures taken from estimate of my father who just started training with me and has no previous experience

Are you a woman?

Why not try the 100 pushup program?

Otherwise - adjustable dumbells and get yourself a barbell and bench from Game, sorted.
Gymming is hard work and does not suit everyone, I know plenty people who signed up for gym and started going every day, after a month they never went again.
