I noticed "standard" gymming like you see most guys do in the gym just didn't get rid of fat for me, when I switched over to unconventional training, example I bought 2x 40kg of concrete bags a while back, I train from Home in a 4 car garage so I have the space, I do a circuit up and down the garage carrying those 40kg bags and do as many reps possible in 2min, write it down on chalk board, then try and beat it next time, it's a killer I then follow that with Burpees Crossfit also a killer.
You'll feel muscles in your core you never knew you had, not only that but it makes you dead tired and hungry.

You can't out gym a ****ty diet:p When you want drop body fat its going to come down to what you eat...The fact that you dropped weight with more intense/extreme training is an indication that you diet was probably average(most likely eating just slightly above your daily required calories), and the higher intensity took care of burning those extra calories IMO, count them calories properly and you really won't have to bust your ass so much to cut fat, but your diet has to be strict

Reading some of the posts here...

Myth #1: You can target areas for fat loss, like you can target areas to build muscle. Epic myth this one.

Sadly, they way it works, your body decides where to lose fat, and for men, the boep is the very last part, which is why you have to aim for a total body fat of 7-8% like xrapidx mentioned.

Myth #2: Light weight and high reps will build muscle mass

While not completely incorrect, also not 100% correct. You need to eat like a beast for one, train like a beast. Doing light weights many reps won't really build muscle. First, you need to build strength, via low reps heavy weight, and work that weight up to a very nice value. Then once you have done that, do high reps at 70% of the weight you did on heavy weight + low reps. Now this will help you build muscle, while you eat like a beast.

So conclusion, heavy weight + many reps (12-20) will build muscle mass, as long as you eat more than your body requires, then you will have muscle growth.

I love it when my post is the last on a page, then a lot of people miss it.

There you go, I'll put it up in the middle of this page for you:p

So true, I did actually change my diet, to tell the truth I enjoy busting my ass, sucker for punishment.
Most people who are not single will struggle to change their diets especially if you live with your partner who might not be inclined to eat chicken and lean items all the time, add kids and it makes it even tougher
Strict diet is the toughest.
REspect for those guys who maintain that 6 or 8 pack.

3 weeks off - and I'm paying the price, I can hardly walk today, getting really worried for tomorrow.

3 weeks off

I took yesterday off and I feel like I lost out somehow.
Don't think I'd cope well taking 3 weeks off, plus that initial day after soreness when you start over again.

Sorry for the noob question, but does body building only involve bulking up?

I want to build a more athletic type body (defined) rather than a bouncer type & big muscles. I am scared to follow some routines and/or advise since it might be aimed at the latter.

This is probably a weight-related fitness thread rather than a body building thread :p

I doubt anyone on here is one of those "get onto stage with a darkbrown spray tan type of bodybuilder":D

Most of use on here(I assume) do it to look good naked (aesthetics) and health reasons I suppose:p

No routine will get you huge if you don't eat huge, You grow muscle by breaking it down and eating a **** load to repair, so don't be scared to do your typical weight lifting routine, if your not eating enough, you''ll most probably cut some fat, and your muscles will become a little fuller/harder and you'll get the ripped/lean look(most probably the look your going for)

Edit your typical bodybuilder goes through 2 phases, they'll bulk up by eating over their required calories, the result would be muscle gain and some fat gain, then they'll do a cut (eating under the required calories) with high protein to maintain the muscle gains from the bulk and stripping away fat...Rinse repeat

Without generilizing here but most of those typical bouncer types look all bloated up from steroid use anyway (maybe explains why they're so aggro)

I agree, to blow up like a bouncer, isn't as easy as you would think, you do need to eat a crapton of food for one, and move a craptop of weight, and probably have done more than just a couple of roid cycles. I am ofcoarse talking about the really really huge bouncers.

For athletic look, you can still start out with a strength based program (most 5x5 programs), these programs builds strength, but not necesirily muscle size, which almost sounds perfect to you.

Either way, you will still need to clean up your diet to get the look you want, no amount of exercising at the gym will give you that sporty/athletic look you are after if your diet is based on mcd;s :P

Hi Guys, thanks for the great replies.

It's just that I see so many people at the gym who are huge in proportion to their height. Are all of them just eating alot?

I do keep a very clean and pure diet, I've done plenty of research in this area. Its just I didnt follow it as much throughout the winter :).

I am actually a sort-of triathlete, completed my first Ironman 70.3 in the beginning of the year. So I do alot of cardio, but I try to maintain a 50:50 ratio (or close as possible) with weight training.

I've started using some supplements. I've read great reviews on both. USN CLA Thermo and BCAA. Will post results if you guys are interested.

O-M-F 3 weeks off can kill your strength, if only you could build as quick as you loose - I struggled my ass of today with deadlifts, felt like I was going to pass out in the last 5 sets of 10.

Tomorrow I start a new diet, 4000 calories - lets see how it goes. I really hope to get the strength I lost losing weight back fast.

I guess it depends on your body type. For example, I recently found this one dude who made a bunch of stuff available for sale, for skinny guys trying to bulk up. Now I am pretty sure he was also a skinny guy who looks pretty decent now:
http://www.youtube.com/user/vincedelmonte?feature=results_main (Vince is the fella on the left on that page)

Now that, doesn't look all that bulky to me, and I am taking a guess that is the kind of look I am going to end up with, basically because I have long legs and arms and to look massively big will be incredibly hard for me. And I am eating like a pig at the moment :P

Another supplement website for interest:

Interesting site, their prices are good. Are they making their own brand or what?
