The thing about gymming regularly is that you make hard work your best friend. You look forward to the sessions and it ceases to be a chore. Remember, always compare yourself to yourself, and nobody else!

It's also about food and carb ratio / type of carb. If you're downing loads of high GI carbs - white bread, muffins, sugar, you're bound to pack on fat more than if you are consuming lower GI carbs and eating smaller meals more frequently.

Calories is the be all and end all of losing weight. Have you heard of the term dirty cut? eating junkfood is fine as long as you are at a deficit. However if you want to build muscle, you need to get your macros right. Enough protein/fat/carbs. However if you want to be as healthy as possible eat healthy proteins fats and carbs and this is where eating low GI carbs and low-fat proteins like tuna is great for a healthy lifestyle. some people go further than that and make sure that they get their RDA of all vitamins and other essentials.

Thanks there are quite a few evox proteins like that synergy one and super protein. Must I buy the one that just says 100 percent. Bear in mind I'm doing a home workout mainly body weight.

Get the synergy... its not just about protein, iso is better than concentrate... and I don't believe any protein is 100% protein as advertised.

It's possible to consume pure fat - way beyond your daily caloric allowance, and lose weight - it's not as cut and dried as x calories a day. It's a general guideline. Balance is important when trying to maintain any sort of healthy lifestyle. Your body will be more forgiving before your 30s, but believe me, if you're not looking after it leading up to then, you're in for a bit of a shocker later. Sugars and refined sugars produce high levels of insulin - living in a high insulin environment is bad for so many reasons.

Agree 100%

I'd be cautious with the low fat thing. That's more marketing twang. Fat (in it's natural form) is not the evil society has made it out to be, but everything in moderation. There is even plenty of evidence to support the notion that not only is fat consumed not necessarily put on as fat, but is necessary for proper bodily function and even fat loss. Our problem these days is that we live in the instant age - we want microwaved, not slow cooked... instead of a healthy lifestyle, we're after a quick fix.

And don't confuse 100% protein (marketing nonsense) with 100% whey. They're different things. I reckon make it your goal to become regular in the gym first, make sure you're eating healthy, but don't spend too much time concentrating on the minors as it's easy to miss the majors. Rather get into a decent routine and make sure you're meeting the major goals before worrying about the finer details, otherwise you may just lose your love for the gym. Too many people worry about their protein intake and overdo it while not eating healthy in between. Your body needs real food first - protein is there to suppliment it, never make it your major.

I am trying to eat healthy and think I'm doing quite well at it, my problem is I think I need more protein intake as I can't seem to eat enough so I want to supplement with shakes.

So the synergy would be better than the one that says 100 percent whey protein? Also is the chocolate flavor nice?I have tried vanilla and I like it.

I change flavour when I get bored...some are nicer than others, haven't used evox in awhile. As far as I remember, Synergy is the better protein from Evox.

we're after a quick fix.

Which is why calorie counting is a solid method for losing weight. All of these commercial diets like leangains, paleo, keto, IF etc. they all have 1 thing in common, they are all diets which rely on calorie deficiency, the only difference between these diet regimes is the edge that they give, like IF is great for reducing your insulin levels, ketosis is great for additional fat burning. It is simple math if calories in < calories out, expect weight loss. IMO i see caloric allowance as a baseline rather than a guideline.

Does anybody have any experience with this product for gaining mass? Or know of any similar products. Unfortunately, as I am still putting myself through university, I don't have the funds to eat like a horse and I have to do serious eating to add mass. I just can't do that right now, so I'm looking for some assistance. I know these products won't be miracle products, but every extra gram helps.

Agree 100%. It's about getting the basics right first. Often we spend too much time trying to figure out the finer details and miss the important stuff.

If you can't get your caloric allowance through eating healthy food, then suppliment with that - very high on the carbs, so expect to pack on fat if you're not in the gym every day... Just make sure you're gymming regularly and you should be OK. How young are you? **EDIT** I see you are at Uni - you will be fine, and study will help burn that energy too lol.

Another thing students have trouble with - getting enough sleep. Your body does NOT build muscle in the gym - that's where you break it down... you build it (mostly) while you're asleep. You NEED good sleep to pack on muscle. Balance it - if you're not getting to the gym often enough, don't down suppliments that pack heavy calories.

Great input, thanks.

I'm 26, so part-time university student. No lies, I have a busy day; work, gym, study, so I shouldn't have any trouble burning energy. Sleep, well, I'm looking at 5 to 6 hours on average during the week. Not the best, I know.

Not the best but its the only realistic option if you are a student who gyms. You have to compromise on something, be it friends, love, work, or sleep. I chose to sacrifice sleep too. no biggy.

Catch up on weekends :) And take power naps during the day. Power naps can be very good for you if you can get into them - 30 mins to an hour tops.

Loving this latest convo trend on protein content and composition in supplements.

I personally stay away from any protein supplement that has a combination including Milk Protein or Cassein for my pre or post workout shakes. I like to use a shake that contains only a combination of whey concentrate and hydrolyzed whey for my pre workout - that's if I cannot fit in a solid meal. I keep the pure isolate whey + dexstrose/vitargo for my post workouts.

I'd keep Milk Protein and Cassein protein for before bed shakes due to the longer digestion and amino release.

On another point - for the guys eating tons of chicken, do you buy chicken breasts on the bone and clean them, or do you buy the breasts. I always thought that buying the cheaper breast on the bone and cleaning them myself is cheaper...but I made the effort and weighed out the cooked meat I got from 1.38kg of chicken breast on the bone raw. I got 730g cooked meat. That's a 48% loss and working off of the latest prices comes to R53/kg for nett cooked chicken.

Will be doing this same experiment and buying pre cleaned chicken breasts and see how much loss happens in cooking.

What do you guys buy?

Boneless skinless tasteless :D

Lol!!! I found that a few drops of olive oil on the outside and then cutting them open and adding some lemon and black pepper salt or rosemary and olive salt (Ina Paarmans) makes the world of difference.

True :) I'm lazy though lol. Or is that spoiled (having a wife that cooks)
