1967: De Gaulle says 'non' to Britain - again
The French President, Charles de Gaulle, has for a second time said he will veto Britain's application to join the Common Market.
He warned France's five partners in the European Economic Community (EEC) that if they tried to impose British membership on France it would result in the break-up of the community.

May never wanted Brexit in the first place, were you expecting something different?

I don’t expect anything. A few weeks it was hard borders.

It’s just fun to watch. More pathetic and worrying if you’re British.

The UK now wants to keep its borders opened. Wasn’t the whole thing about controlling the borders?

Well if you don't have a Brexiteer in charge, what do you expect?

Well done to Scottish Tories for attempting to hold down one of the main promises of Brexit.

Scottish MPs threaten to vote down final Brexit deal as row over fishing rights escalates

LONDON —Scottish Tories have threatened to vote down a final Brexit deal as a row over fishing rights escalates.

The UK has made a number of concessions to the EU in recent days as it tries to thrash out the terms of a post-Brexit transition deal in time for the European Council summit in Brussels later this week.

It has now backed down on its demands to take back full control of UK fisheries policy during the transition phase, according to The Guardian.

The plan to take back full control of UK fisheries and regaining the right to set quotas was one of the central commitments of the Leave campaign. The reports have prompted outrage from Scottish Tory MPs, whose coastal communities are determined to regain control of fisheries on the day Britain leaves the EU.

John Lamont, MP for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk, said that he would reject any final Brexit deal — which needs to be passed in the Westminster parliament — if it did not hand the UK full control of setting quotas and determining which vessels are allowed in British waters.

Some more details.

They’ve had time to mullet over and the verdict from Tory MPs on the fishing section of the transition deal is in: cod do better. The rebellion is already on a significant scale – Number 10 will be reeling from these quotes (via David Scullion):

Douglas Ross MP: “The UK Government has delivered far less than I hoped and expected… it would be easier to get someone to drink a pint of cold sick than to try to sell this as a success.”

Ross Thomson MP: “Be clear that UK national fisheries resources are not negotiable and that we will therefore be setting our own fisheries policy from 29 March 2019. We cannot remain party to the OFF during the proposed implementation period.”

Ruth Davidson: “Having spoken to fishing leaders today, I know they’re deeply frustrated with this outcome. There is no ignoring the fact that this falls short of what they had hoped for in the short-term.”

Iain Duncan Smith: “There does seem to be a real concern… it appears that at least through the implementation period nothing will change, and I think that will be a concern and the government clearly has to deal with that because a lot of MPs are very uneasy about that right now.”

Richard Tice, Leave Means Leave: “Under the current plans, we will not be taking back control of our fisheries when we leave the EU – something which the Government had previously promised. Ruth Davidson is absolutely right on this – our fishermen must have absolute control of our waters and fish from the end of March 2019 and anything less is totally unacceptable.”

Fishing for Leave: “[David Davis] should stay in Brussels as his allegiance is obviously to the EU ring of stars not Her Majesty the Queen or the British people.”

Scottish Fishermen’s Federation: “It’s far short of an acceptable deal – we leave the OFF and hand back sovereignty over our seas a few seconds later.”

Meanwhile Open Europe’s Henry Newman is reporting that Whitehall officials are advocating that the UK should give up fishing rights and that Hammond is not interested in defending the fishing industry. Hyped up rows over the transition have traditionally been a bit of a red herring. But this is not going swimmingly.

Transition deal agreed

LIVE: 'We have Brexit transition deal', says Barnier

Key points:

Transition period will end on New Year's Eve 2020
UK can sign but not implement third-country trade deals until then
Northern Ireland to have 'full regulatory alignment' as 'backstop'
EU citizens who arrive before 2021 get same rights as those after Brexit
Britain only able to 'consult' on fishing rule changes
Joint committee to be set up to arbitrate on transition disputes
EU leaders will 'rubber stamp' deal on Thursday or Friday

Can't be that bad a deal, as Chris's racist pal doesn't like it.

Except Nigel is right, as usual. And you hate him for that :crylaugh:

Was it a climbdown? Definitely:

The prime minister had vowed in February to “battle the EU” over its demand to extend long-term residency rights to citizens arriving during the transition period, which starts after the 29 March 2019 Brexit deadline.

Instead, freedom of movement will effectively continue for 21 months until the end of 2020 with EU citizens able to claim residency for themselves and their families. EU citizens living in Britain before Brexit Day have their rights safeguarded by the draft withdrawal agreement.

No, I actually hate him for being a racist xenophobe who is actively attempting to bring down the UK economy and has admitted that if he succeeds he will move to the US (or the EU, after all he arranged German citizenship for the whole family after the referendum result) and refuses to give up the income he gets from the EU which he purports to hate.

It's a pity that plane crash hadn't been a bit more serious...

Only pointing out that the British are extremely stupid to vote for Brexit and then not put a Brexiteer in charge. :whistling:

There was a Brexiteer candidate but the Times, a known Remainer newspaper, got a journalist to ask the Brexiteer about motherhood and after the manufactured "outrage", May became the PM because there was no-one else left. If the Tory membership had a vote, she (May) would've lost .

He's an MEP -- do you want him to work for free? Do you also want the EU parliament to be like North Korea with everyone agreeing with everything? There is nothing wrong with anti-EU parties in the European parliament. There are many anti-EU parties in the EU parliament from a range of countries.

I'm actually thinking that if I become unemployed before 2021, I'll go to UK to get free NHS and grants.

It's patriotism, I cost nothing to France and cost to the British this way!

I note the font, but there is a good chance now the govt will start applying the currently available restrictions (which they have been lax to do, as it's been easier to just blame the EU up till now) and you'd be on the next train back to France ;)

So in ChrisWorld Farage will still be an MEP after Brexit? He intends to keep all EU income even after Brexit even though he hasn't earned a single cent/pence due to his almost criminal lack of attendance of the parliament and committees.

Nigel Farage refuses to give up EU pension: 'Why should my family suffer?'

He hates the EU but just can't take his little piggy snout out of the trough he has made, can he?

Noting that a part of the Brexit bill (which is outrageous for him) will pay for his future benefits and pension.

And don't be mischievous, he ranks only 748th out of 751!

Put you in a rowboat and tow you out to the half way point and then point the way to the French coast?
