The end of the EU’s Brexit bounce

With a massive 80-seat parliamentary majority, Johnson has been able to present himself as more statesman-like and dynamic than his European counterparts, many of whom are dealing with political crises of their own. In Germany, the two biggest political parties are in the grip of an ongoing psychodrama, owing to challenges from the Greens on the left and the Alternative for Germany on the (far) right. In France, President Emmanuel Macron is pursuing a difficult pension reform, and will likely have his nose bloodied in local elections next month. Spain and Italy, meanwhile, have weak and divided governments.

Moreover, Johnson is preparing a populist economic-policy package, complete with fiscal stimulus and Trump-like handouts to favoured constituencies. The hope is to engineer an economic upswing that will position the UK to outperform the eurozone, at least in the short term. If the gambit succeeds, populist parties in other EU member states will once again see Britain as a model (rather than a cautionary tale) for their own Eurosceptic causes.

Making matters worse, European leaders will now find it much more difficult to maintain the impressive level of intra-EU unity achieved by Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, during the first phase of the talks. Once the EU begins to negotiate the details of a trade and investment deal with the UK, the divergent economic models and security needs of northern, southern, eastern, and western member states will be much harder to reconcile. Johnson’s government, embracing the role of Perfidious Albion, will not hesitate to exploit these divisions.

So now they want to speak to "proper" trade economists. These guys are in for a shock when they hear how it is all going to work and those unicorns ... were just Unicorns.

As an economist, I can tell you that economists hardly agree on anything and their views are likely influenced by their political leanings. There's nothing wrong with attempting to get more Brexit friendly economists if all the economists currently working on trade deals are part of Cummings has called the "blob" (civil service economists who are inherently pro-EU).

Chris isn't going to be happy...

Tommy Robinson arrested

FAR-right extremist Tommy Robinson has been arrested after an alleged bust-up in the pool at Center Parcs.

The English Defence League founder, 36, was on a break at the Woburn resort in Bedfordshire when he allegedly clashed with another guest.

Cummings is an unelected bureaucrat and should therefore have no say over policy, hiring or any aspect of the running of the country. If he wants to have input then he should run for a seat.

Things are going great for the Brexit team.

They admitted that the UK doesn't need its farmers.

Dominic also wants the UK to exit from the ECHR. The very body that Churchill himself pleaded with Europe to form after WW2 and in so doing Dominic also admits people did not know what they voted for in the referendum.

Chris and co may have more reason to moan soon.

UK 'prepares to seek Brexit transition extension' as coronavirus crisis grows

Detailed Brexit trade negotiations planned for this week were cancelled on Monday, with Government sources indicating that the UK is preparing the ground to seek a mutually agreed extension to the talks in the coming weeks.

As the coronavirus crisis deepened, senior Whitehall sources also confirmed that civil servants who had been working on Brexit "no deal" preparations were being actively redeployed into virus crisis management.

There are some things that are just a lot bigger than all of "us" and all of "them" right now. The entire planet is grinding to a halt, not just Europe. Asking for an extension makes perfect sense at the moment.

What’s the problem here, this makes complete sense. With the current situation, British people first.

Completely true, but sense doesn't come into some our friends opinions. Chris will invoke WW2, Churchill and Thatcher and be disappointed...

Boris Johnson is facing a backlash for ditching a pledge to keep US chlorinated chicken out of British supermarkets under pressure from American negotiators in post-Brexit trade talks.

Tory backbenchers warned the government was in for a rebellion on the issue while animal welfare groups and opposition parties accused Boris Johnson of refusing to “stand up to Donald Trump” and “sacrificing food standards” in the name of a trade deal.

Downing Street signalled on Thursday that imports of lower-standard American food were now on the table in the negotiations, a reversal of a longstanding promise.

Yep, the chickens are coming home to roost /cough

Vote in a bunch of self serving liars, what do you expect. Johnson has really outdone himself. We didn't think he could be any more inept than he was before, but wow, he has really gone off the scale now.

I guess we'll need to see how the PM Dominic Cummings spins this.

Oh, that's Dominic Cummings the unelected bureaucrat btw. You know, the type of person the Brits were voting to get rid of, but who is now actually running the country :crylaugh:
