Terblanche, Jacobs star in Sharks win

Posted on Saturday, July 14, 2007 - 16:59

Stefan Terblanche and Adrian Jacobs grabbed two tries each to steer the Sharks to a convincing 43-20 (halftime 24-6) win over Wildeklawer Griquas in an Absa Currie Cup match in Durban on Saturday.

The Sharks reeled off six tries against a plucky but outclassed Griquas outfit, who deserved the two tries they scored in reply.

Sharks scrumhalf Rory Kockott goaled all five of the kicks he aimed at the uprights, most of them from acute angles.

There might have been a few gasps on the Griquas bench when fullback Terblanche sped in for the first touchdown with just 31 seconds played. That was after flank Keegan Daniel had made a storming break from the kick-off.

But within seconds of the restart the visitors had barrelled their way downfield and the Sharks found themselves pinned in their own 22.

Much of match unfolded on similar terms, but the Sharks showed significantly better finishing ability while Griquas frequently faltered with the goalline looming.

Centre Jacobs claimed the Sharks' second try in the 18th minute when he straightened the line and then smashed through the defence.

There were seven minutes left in the first half when loosehead prop Beast Mtawarira carried several defenders over the line with him and crashed over to score.

The scoreboard remained unmoved early in the second half as play continued to sweep from one 22-metre line to the other.

Then, in the 55th minute, Griquas finally broke through a last-ditch tackle when right wing Baldwin McBean scored after muscling through left wing Henno Mentz' challenge.

Flyhalf Conrad Barnard converted from the touchline, but six minutes later he hit the upright with a penalty that would have narrowed the gap to eight points.

Instead, the Sharks surged back and Terblanche took the final pass to score his second try, which earned the home side their bonus point.

Griquas earned a consolation for all their hard work when replacement Wayne van Heerden burst down the touchline to score with three minutes remaining.

But the Sharks had the last laugh when lock Steven Sykes was driven over on the hooter.

Scorers:

Sharks - Tries: Stefan Terblanche (2), Adrian Jacobs (2), Beast Mtawarira, Steven Sykes. Conversions: Rory Kockott (4), Bradley Barritt. Penalty: Kockott.

Griquas - Tries: Baldwin McBean, Wayne van Heerden. Conversions: Conrad Barnard (2). Penalties: Barnard (2).

Yup. Short term contract (cc only) whilst his Welsh? club are in their off season. His first match back was last weekend against WP and he scored twice in that match as well and was man of the match. He apparently came home for a holiday and Dick Muir roped him in order to have a little more experience on the field amoungst all the youngsters.

Sharks overcome Cavaliers in Wellington

Posted on 21 July 2007 - 18:57

The Sharks scored a well-deserved 26-12 victory over the Boland Cavaliers in an Absa Currie Cup rugby game in Wellington on Saturday.

Scores were level 12-all at half time.

The visitors secured their win within three minutes after half time when they scored two easy tries that caught the Cavaliers flat-footed.

The Cavaliers, however, fought back strongly in the last 15 minutes doing most of the play in the Sharks' half.

But their defence stayed solid throughout, denying the Cavaliers opportunity to penetrate.

The home team had their chances, but handling errors at crucial stages cost them dearly.

Outstanding for the Sharks was No 8 Ryan Kankowski, who tested the Cavaliers' defence to the full.

He was well supported by livewire flanker Keegan Daniel, captain Jacques Botes and loosehead prop Tendai (Beast) Mtwarira.

For the home team Hennie Daniller played well at centre and was unlucky on more than one occasion not to split the defence.

Dewald Duvenhage and Isma-eel Dollie did well as halfback pairing, while lock Dries van Schalkwyk, No 8 Francois Prinsloo and flanker Angelo Brinkhuys held their own.

The Sharks also secured a bonus point scoring four tries to nil.

Dollie opened the score for Boland in the sixth minute with a well-struck penalty (3-0).

In the 18th minute disaster struck for the home side when fullback Renfred Dazel's kick was charged down by lock Nikolai Blignaut, who virtually strolled over untouched for a gifted try under the posts.

Scrumhalf Rory Cockett succeeded with the conversion. (3-7).

But two minutes later Dollie landed his second penalty to reduce the score to 6-7.

Boland took the lead for the second time in the match when Dollie landed another penalty (9-7).

In the 25th minute the Sharks regained the lead when flanker Keegan Daniel scored close to the corner flag (9-12).

Five minutes from the half-time whistle Dollie levelled matters with another penalty (12-12).

The Sharks started the second half in fine style with two tries within the first three minutes that sealed the match.

Captain Jacques Botes was first to score just after the kick-off.

Kockett succeeded with the conversion (12-19). Two minutes later Kankowski finally took the match away from the Cavaliers with a try which Kockett converted (12-26).

SCORERS

Sharks: Tries: Nikolai Blignaut, Keegan Daniel, Jacques Botes, Ryan Kankowski. Conversions: Rory Cockett.

Cavaliers - Penalties: Isma-eel Dollie (4).

Congrats to the Sharks on winning, you were certainly the better team on the day :) Shocking rugby from the Blue Bulls, mind you

Sharks ratlle the Blue Bulls

The Blue Bulls do not know what to expect in the Currie Cup rugby match at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night when they play a Sharks team in which Adrian Jacobs has been selected at flyhalf.
The Sharks produced a major surprise on Wednesday by moving the versatile Jacobs to the pivot position.

Jacobs has played at centre and on the wing at first-class level but has seldom had an opportunity to show his talents at flyhalf.
