The Droid TV thread

Have you tested Showmax? They claim that their app now supports Android TV so I would assume that it also works on the Mi Box.
I would assume so. The app is available from the Android TV play store, whereas dstv now and Supersport need to be side loaded. I don't have a showmax subscription though, so haven't tried it.

Not sure what you're on about, both DSTV Now and Supersport work a treat on my Mi Box

Are you serious? To test my point:
  1. Install DSTV NOW from Playstore.
  2. Open/Run the DSTV NOW app. If you are lucky, it will run on your device, but for how long? Until DSTV updates the NOW app, yours might get broken.
  3. Start a channel, i.e. Supersport 2.
  4. See all the black bars surrounding the picture, wasted property, broken app...

THIS is what I am talking about. The picture in the above example is not complete. Some of the screen is actually chopped off. You will KNOW this if you compared the picture with an actual DSTV channel. Other than that, I can not make you understand how outdated FLASH is for streaming stuff <HAHAHA>!

Crickey... Only reason I'm responding is in case somebody else is put off getting an Android TV due to your nonsense posts. So, for the rest of the sane world, DSTV Now and Supersport work fantastically on my MiBox. Yes, I did have to side load them (which is trivially easy) and plug in a mouse, but once that initial setup (which maybe took 5 minutes) was done it's worked flawlessly. There's no wasted space, black bars, cut-off images or anything.

Android TV does not auto update DSTV Now as it's sideloaded. We are using old versions so a complete rewrite of app might break it one day. We also get a option to go full screen in DSTV now so no cropped picture. It's only cropped to allow access to live channel menu.

Video is not the best but adaptive streaming is more irritating as the pic can hit 720p but if net unstable may wobble. Wish we could choose fixed resolution. However for sport there no service that's as stable and reliable.

1. DSTV no longer uses flash.
2. DSTV has never used flash on android as flash hadn't been supported on android for over a year when Now was released.

So stop talking ***.

Now and SS are fairly horrible apps yes but at least form a coherent sentence when you bash them please.

Most importantly the apps and services are free for those who 'family' share. There are no other apps legal or illegal as reliable for sport. With some internet tweaks you get a great pic with little to no buffering associated with other android live streams.

Plus the channel selection is great with most channels like crime investigation picture quality rivalling satellite signal. For cordcutters it just a great tool in the free streaming lineup

A friend of mine has also reported a problem with showmax on the 582. Try and download a previous version of the of the app as he had it working previously methinks.

What's the latest version of Showmax? Having the same issue, so might need to download an older version as well.

Only use ss app for highlights as thats the only thing that works. Dstv now works well.

You have to unroot the device to get dstv now to work.

You can try to install Dolphin browser, enable the flash plugin and visit a flash site to download the flash apk.
SS should hopefully then play in a browser.
If you have v1.8a firmware, you can update apps like Kodi(NTMC) to the latest version through the marketplace.

I've got the HPH NT-N8. Any tricks for SS and DSTV Now app to work?

You can try v1.3 Marshmallow firmware.
There is also AndroidTV firmware but only the UI is different, it might be confusing for people used to normal Android.
It fixes some DRM problems and runs much better.
SS should work in Dolphin browser after enabling flash and installing the flash app.

Any specific reason for Dolphin?

I'll give it another try, had done so previously without luck.

@Speedster Which model Mi Box do you have. I recently bought a Mi Box 3s model MDZ-19-AA. DSTV Now does not work at all, app crashes before it launches. Any advise?

Unfortunatel you bought the wrong model. That model is meant for Chinese market. Correct device when buying from China is Mibox International version which costs between $79 and $89 with south African plug. International runs Android TV 6 like USA Mibox
