The Droid TV thread

Thanks

+ the Q7 has a remote included. How does the Q7 perform vs the previous Droid tv mx?

The Android interface is a lot snappier than the MX. Media playback wasn't as good when it first came out, but has steadily improved with every firmware release

The KitKat release is fantastic but XBMC support on it is limited.

Cool Post .... but these avsupply guys are expensive .. bought Q7S RK3188 1.6GHz Quad Core Google Android 4.4 TV BOX (Cam, Bluetooth) for R 750 at geekbuyig.com

Yeah but you have to import it plus pay import duties plus take the risk plus wait for customs etc.

You are paying AVSupply to take the risk for you, pay customs for you, and to not have to wait. And also offer warranty in case things go wrong.

Its well worth it to me.

They're not expensive given the service and warranty. AV Supply have been fantastic on support - just look at this thread. Some things are just worth the money.

+1
thats the reason I convinced a friend to order one
the support from AVSupply seems to go beyond what most would consider excellent

Another reason for the higher local pricing is due to the express shipping cost. Many of the Chinese suppliers offer free low priority shipping which can take 1~2 months and the items often arrive with badly damaged boxes etc. If you use the courier shipping (EMS/DHL) option on Geekbuying this will add $28 to the cost of your order. After adding VAT and any additional courier charges to your order I don't think that the local pricing will be any higher than ordering directly from China. Local warranty and support are also very important with a complex electronic product like this as others have already mentioned.

If anybody is considering an M8/MXIII, here are two sites that I am currently using as free Netflix/Hulu Plus replacements - www.shush.se and www.usdrama.net. They have a good selection of very recent TV shows/movies which can be streamed at up to 720p resolutions. The standard web browser on my DroidTV MX streams this content just as well as any web browser on my PC so you can use any PC to test whether or not these two sites will meet your requirements.

Here are a few other suggestions for TV shows (many of these services like Primewire/ProjectFreeTV are also available in XBMC) ...

So my ATV400 unit only has 100MB/s lan connection so it was the reason I can't stream a 35GB mkv from MyCloud Nas device.
I was using XBMC latest alpha build seemed more stable than the stable version.

@Hemps: Most of the current generation of SoCs only support 100Mbps ethernet connections. The latest S802 models can apparently transfer files at speeds around 85Mbps. The ATV might be quite a bit slower. The S805 and S812 which are due later this year claim to offer gigabit ethernet support but I doubt that the speeds will be much higher than 100Mbps. What speeds do you get when you try to transfer a file to/from your NAS from/to your ATV400 (from a flash drive etc.) using ES File Explorer etc.?

@dualmeister: Apparently Amlogic is the only Chinese ARM processor manufacturer that was willing to work with the XBMC developers to enable low level graphics support on their hardware. At one stage Pivos was employing Scott Davilla (XBMC for Apple TV developer etc.) to customise XBMC for their Amlogic based platform. This is the code that is running on most Amlogic devices at the moment. Rockchip has not supported any attempts to provide information/software on how to access their graphics hardware. Amlogic seems to be the recommended hardware to get the best XBMC performance at the moment.

That's the exact same spec as our Q7, which is R800 cheaper

Hi there - you hit the nail on the head when you said Cloudgate is not marketed as a TV box. The ROM has been taught to recognize a physical kb mouse and HD screen to create an Android PC. You can plug it into your TV bit that is not the primary objective. It is an alternative computer for the home. For more info, please visit www.cloudgate.co.za. Regards, Jonathan. Android already recognizes a physical keyboard and mouse.

Looking at your youtube video: CloudGate - Basic Navigation Tutorial.

The navigation is seems very similar to what one would have with a "tv box". Can you give examples of some of the enhancements it has over any other android box?

The only thing that stands out to me is the "cloudware" client (btw looks like a re-brand of another application also in the play store) which is also available in the play store for other devices - but surely accessing hosted apps is a paid service? Pricing?
