I only get sound over hdmi. Unfortunately my av receiver doesn't have hdmi inputs.
My roku works on the same cable/input.

Bad News :erm:

It works perfectly for me :)

Here's what to do

(1) Go "Settings >> Advanced" and make sure "Digital audio auto-detection" is disabled and "Digital Audio Ouptut" is set to SPDIF passthrough

(2) Launch XBMC and go "System >> System >> Audio output" and set "Number of channels" to 5.1, enable "Enable passthrough" and select "Dolby Digital (AC3) capable receiver and "DTS Capable receiver"

Exit and play a movie

Another quick test is playing an MP3 off a USB drive with the Android Music player

Let me know if it works?

Thanks

I set it up like you suggested. Still no sound via SPDIF.

Are there any new roms available for the mx2 (the one that you buy from Avsupply) I would like to update mine to look (and hopefully work) as good as the m8 or mx3. I bought mine from Avsupply a year ago, besides from using the OTA updater I haven't done anything to it...yet

There's the 1.2 rom and yes, it works as well as the mx3 except for the CPU being dual core instead of quad. Stability wise though, it's an awesome box. It won't do 4k vid but really...

The 1.2 rom is here:

Though perhaps AVSupply has a rooted version?

Its a Denon 1803. More than 10 years old but still looks and works like new.

It works perfectly with my Roku 3.

Very strange

I tested after flashing a new unit and it auto detected that I had an optical cable connected. On first boot, I immediately heard all the Android navigation sounds via my amp

After connecting the toslink cable to the MXIII, do you see the red optical light on the amplifier side, and can you try swiching your cable around?

Can you also make sure it's properly inserted into the MXIII port

I can see the red light in the cable. Will try reinserting it.

@Yotch it does have a coax input too.

Another problem I've noticed. When I reboot from sleep I get no displayvia hdmi even the blue light is on. I have to hold the power button down until it turns off and reboots before it starts working.

Are you using the HDMI cable that came with the MXIII, do you have another one to test with?

For audio via SPDIF, please enable Android touch sounds (Settings >> More Settings >> Audio) and check if you get navigation sounds when moving around the interface

Thanks

Yes. I reconnected my Roku on the same cable and it works perfectly. Switch back to the MX and no sound.

Please connect the SPDIF cable to the MXIII (Amp must be powered on) and reboot

Any sounds now?

Schedule downloads

Sorry for the interruption gents, I'm just posting details on how to set up scheduled downloading on your Droid box.
Some of us have accounts with free bandwidth between certain hours (e.g. 12am-7am in the case of Telkom capped accounts), so the instructions below will allow you to capitalize on it and have your torrents or NZBs download while you're asleep.

This applies to any program really, but for the sake of my example, I use TTorrent for downloading.

1. Install taskbomb: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.androidideas.taskbomb&hl=en
2. Install broodplank's quick reboot https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=broodplank.quickreboot&hl=en
3. Configure taskbomb to launch your preferred download client at your preferred time:

  • Click 'Tasks' to add a task (launch your download app)
  • Click add
  • If you like, change the default task name to something more descriptive
  • Set action type to 'Main' (Main launches a program, View opens a document)
  • Click App and select your download application
  • Click the return arrow (top right) to save the new task
  • Go back to the main menu and click Alarms to set a new alarm (scheduled event)
  • Click add
  • Select your new task
  • Set the start time
  • Set the days it should run on
  • Cick the return arrow (top right) to save

That takes care of launching the download application, now you need to take care of stopping it...
Follow the same instructions above, this time create a new task to run the quick reboot application (warm reboots without prompting). Set it's time to when your free download period ends (eg 6:55 am).

I have my 2Gb drive attached to the box and set TTorrent to download to the external drive on schedule every night. I just queue the downloads first, exit TTorrent, and taskbomb takes care of the rest.

I've updated the OP with a link to this post.

If there is some type of compatibility issue with the AVR you might be able to use a cheap optical to coax converter but you need to be sure that the optical output is working.

From all the testing I've done today it seems like the problem is the optical output. Will try again tomorrow but it's frustrating. I've rechecked all the settings about 20 times already.
