The Droid TV thread

Guys... i dont know anyone who i can borrow the router from so i am going to go ahead and buy one to rule out router issues.

so which one do you suggest?

d-link Wireless AC750

or
TP-Link N600

Were you planning on buying a new home router anytime soon?

If not, the only other thing we can try is swapping the unit

I'll send one up on Monday if you can't find a solution this weekend

To be frank, I am not looking to buy a new router unless i am forced to. That's the reason i have posted asking which one is better. But I'd rather not spend the money unless i have to.

I feel bad about swapping the unit because knowing my luck, it will work fine when at your end.:o:o

Both good,I currently have a Tplink modem, never had a complaint, but If I had to choose,I would definitely go for D-link,You get free dyndns account :D https://www.dlinkddns.com/login/?next=/

The firmware looks almost the same(Looks if Tp-link cloned firmware, sort of). Don't know about that Tp-Link model, but mine can use custom "Tomato" firmware;)

@iru786: Are you anywhere near a Telkom shop - tell them you are having a few issues with your line and see if they are willing to lend you a router. Can you not borrow a smart phone or a MiFi just to check before you take the plunge?

I must say that I have been struggling with some services on my DroidTV today and I think it's either ISP or exchange related. Hopefully things will improve tonight. In general does your line perform well? Which ISP are you using?

Does your phone support WiFi tethering (HotSpot)?

My line is performing well generally. But i am going to get some data for my telkom mobile number and check with it. If the device works fine with it than its something to do with my router but if it does not work fine with that as well than it has to do with device.

@Phrozin... I currently have Billion 5200G model modem + router. I has been working fine for me and other devices connected with it are not having the issue. But its old now. So i was thinking that if its a router issue than i can just use this as adsl modem and connect a D-Link or TP-Link router to it for WiFi connectivity.

What do you guys think?

@iru786: I have been experiencing a lot of packet loss on my line today. Surprisingly I am still able to stream 1080p YouTube videos on my laptop while the DroidTV struggles to even load the YouTube app let alone play anything. Can you just check the packet loss on your line by doing a tracert to google.com then using the 2nd hop IP (the one after your router) run 100 pings to that address with 4kb of data (ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -l 4096 -n 100) to see that everything is working correctly. That post from the Matricom forums (see post #482) also mentioned that the G-Box will have problems as a result of packet loss. Do the tests from your PC not the android machine.

Install a CPU speed adjuster and see what speed your CPU is running at.
Something like..
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.sineo.android.noFrillsCPU&hl=en

I noticed two comments here that are interesting:

+1
This Rom is Great Sorted my Wifi issues 6mbps to 33-36mbps!!!

Just tested and min frequency changed and high ethernet speeds are back

@Avsupply How is the Q7 4.4 firmware comming along?

It's working well but XBMC stability is very hit & miss at the moment. The majority of the XBMC releases have bad lipsync

I'll test some more over the weekend and find the best version

Matricom 1.2 is being released tonight at 6pm (Friday, August 1st) according to their forums.
Apparently they are also releasing a brand new feature or something which they are very secretive about. I'm intrigued.

@AVSupply Is the Matricom firmware compatible with our MX2 devices out of the box or do they need to be tweaked?

No problems installing it on a 1.1.6 box

A bit disapointed actually, it feels very "fake" fast!!

**Edit - Just rooted 1.2 :)

@iru786: Have you tried transferring files to/from a flash drive connected to the M8 via WiFi to your PC. This would test the WiFi independently of your ADSL. I posted this for silkman previously and have tested it on the DroidTV MX. There may be better ways but this method doesn't involve doing any Windows networking etc. Maybe you've tried something similar already?

You need to install SSH Server (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.sshserver&hl=en) on the M8 and WinSCP (www.winscp.net) on your PC - both free downloads.

I just need to figure out if there is a way to access the box via my network from my pc to transfer files to it.

Install SSH Server via Android Play Store. It's free.

Run that.
Add a SSH server.
Config so it just runs when app is launched, not all the time.
Add a user. Use whatever, but must use name and password. No blanks.
Start the SSH server.

On computer:
If Windows, download WinSCP.
If Mac, download Cyberduck.
Create SFTP connection using IP of Android.
Use credentials from above.
Use port from what's listed in running Android SSH server.
Connect, and it should give you a side by side file browser that you can use to copy to/from.

Additional notes for SSH Server
After adding the server give it a unique name. Write down the port number. Don't worry about any of the other settings. Click on the Users tab. Just fill in a Username and Password. Don't worry about the Public Keys etc. Make sure to start the SSH server before you try to connect to it.

Additional notes for WinSCP
Run WinSCP. Under Host name type in the IP address (not the server name!) of the M8 (192.168.1.100 in my case). Fill in the Port number that you have written down as well as the User name and Password. Then Save the settings and try to Login. You should be able to drag files from one machine to the other. You will need to drill down to storage/external_storage/sda1 or something similar to reach the flash drive on the M8.

I have been able to copy 1GB+ files in both directions (MX <=> PC) at speeds of between 900~1000 kiB/s (~8Mbps) using 802.11g with my Billion 7300GRA (Trendchip TC3162). You should be able to get similar or better speeds with your Billion and the M8.

If you are still getting very slow WiFi transfer speeds between the M8 and the PC and are looking for some cheap Telkom data, CNA, Telkom Direct shops have a 12X200MB Starter Pack for R50 which I occasionally use in emergencies. 200MB a month isn't much though but should be enough for limited testing. MTN might also have some new cheap data bundles. First test the WiFi as described above before you spend money on data though.

Yotch, perhaps he can do the above test with his M8 connected to his PC via an ethernet cable, thus eliminating wifi and also eliminating the router?

@ Iru786, I love the idea of splitting router and modem, I had continuous problems with electricity spikes damaging wifi/router/modem and loosing whole setup, but now since the split, if I loose one, the other still ok;) .Modem is there only for internet,no routing,no dhcp etc..the wifi router handles that all,but I did make the modem the gateway

@ Avsupply ... The IP range starts from 192.168.1.100

@ Yotch... Did both tests. the max speed i am able to achieve is 1mbps with a few second burst of 2mbps... The average speed is 0.5mbps. The details are gathered from es file explorer.

Edit: Installed netspeed overlay and did transfer of quite a few large files (800MB +) via ftp. The max speed i was able to achieve was 2.8Mbps and average of 800kbps

I also did a test with Mifi today. Running a speed test on mobile phone with mobile data, the download speed i get is 1.7Mbps and upload is 1.2 Mbps. Than i started AP on the phone and connected M8 to that AP. Did test on M8 using the same software and download speed i get on M8 is 0.02 Mbps while upload is 0.01 Mbps.

Now i really don't know what else i can try:cry:
