Yes, that would be a better solution

If you have a lot of content, you should maybe consider getting a small desktop computer that doubles up as a file server. The HP Microserver makes a very nice power efficient server

Maybe I should try another port? the cable is very short about 15cm

The droid should be fine to power external drives. Try different ports and try a different cable. Does your drive have an optional power supply connector? It might be best to power it seperately with a Y cable if not.
 
No separate connector- do some ports have better power supply capabilities? If so I can switch my mouse and HDD port
 
Where can i buy one of these Droid Media Players? Are they compatible with all file types? sorry im an idiot and no nothing about these, so be gentle lol

It'll play pretty much anything. It's pure Android.

Please post the power specs for the usb hard drive that you are using, including inrush current (amps) or power (watts). Also what are the specs of the power supply that you are using (amps)?

Don't have the foggiest how to do that. I'm more of a plug and play guy

The DroidTV PSU is 5V2A
 
@silkman: What brand/size of drive are you using? Is it a USB 2.0 or USB 3 drive?

I had the same problem when I initially purchased my media player from AVSupply. Luckily I work close by to their offices and I could take it back to him together with the harddrive (which worked with my tv's buit-in media player) AVSupply replaced the original AC adaptor with anther one and it has been working happily since then. I will have to check what the output was of the new AC adaptor though.

Can anyone give feedback on Netflix performance - is the interface easy to navigate with the remote control supplied & and is Netflix HD available?

Also is there Dolby digital and DTS pass through?

Referring to the M8 box here specifically. Thanks in advance for your feedback!
 
@ChocolateBear: Netflix HD is not available on most android devices. Google and Amazon have agreements with Netflix to offer HD versions on their own hardware but these are only available for specific devices like the Nexus and the Fire TV etc. The top Netflix resolution on most android devices is 640X480 @ 1350kbps. This restriction is imposed by Netflix and not due to any hardware constraints. This may change in the future though as android is becoming the dominant operating system. The current Netflix interface works much better on an android device with an air mouse than on any other device such as a Roku, AppleTV or a WD which only have standard remotes. An air mouse allows you to swipe up and down much quicker than clicking with a remote. Two of the four current Roku models do not have sufficient processor speed to run the latest Netflix app so it will not be available on these platforms in the future.

Hulu/Hulu Plus are also not available in HD on most android devices. There is, however, a free version of Hulu which is only available on android and Windows devices which could save you a lot in subscription costs as this is a paid service on the Roku, AppleTV, WD etc. I have compiled a list of the latest ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC shows which are available on the free service that I could PM to you if you are interested.

You will need to read up carefully about Dolby and DTS passthrough on the M8 to see if it meets your requirements.

Hi ChocolateBear

I don't use Netflix but the loaded firmware is spoofed as a Nexus 10 to "hopefully" enable HD playback.

Regarding Dolby and DTS support, yes, the M8 supports it
