The Droid TV thread

okay, now im a bit confused now. i want the MX3, but my understanding is that the MX3 only has 1GB ram, compared to this with 2GB... why should i go for the MX3 over the Egreat?

anybody?

It makes sense to get a device that has a growing community and support thread :)

No benefit of having 2Gb. Go with what we know works. There's nothing worse than spending that kind of cash to find it's poorly supported and has issues. Firmware is EVERYTHING in the android device game.

@Icemanbrfc: The MXIII has just been released in China so you will be getting one of the latest S802 based media players on the market. I think that the RK3188 has been available for at least a year. AVSupply are now also customising the box for local customers which is another big advantage. This means that the box will also be running the latest firmware with many of the most popular XBMC repositories already installed. Unless you are very familiar with these units you will find that a preloaded unit will save you hours of frustration as XBMC can be a bit challenging for a novice.

I don't think that the additional RAM will make much of a difference in normal use. I think that the Bluetooth and extra RAM on the M8 are more geared towards gaming than for streaming or media playback. I currently own an Egreat R6A-II (Realtek RTD1185) and there have been no firmware updates in over two years. This seems to be the case with most of their products.

@AVSupply: I must say that from the screenshots that I have seen earlier in the thread, the new customised firmware looks every bit as impressive as those US/UK units that appear in those YouTube videos! I am looking forward to seeing what else you have planned for future devices :).

@ Ivemanbrfc, I have a Egreat M31-B, currently used as a door stopper. They are very poor with firmware updates.
I also have the MX2 and the M8 as well. These are the products I will choose, both good at streaming and dedicated media players, the M8 is a bit more expensive because of 1gb ekstra ram and bluetooth. If you're not a gamer, then even the Mx2 is awesome, but the beefed up sibling, the MXiii is even better.
Firmware wise, all of the android devices are backed up with firmware and even rom cookers. Our local supplier,Avsupply gives warranty, release with latest releases of firmware as well as add-on's.
We have a local support site, besides this thread as well,Mbox.co.za and then there is International support site regarding tweaks, roms etc. named Freaktab(M8 and Mxiii falls under AMlogic based and Q7 under rockchip RK3188)

So the question is, Yes there are a lot of players out there and at cheaper prices or even more expensive, but do they give warranty, firmware support, rom cooking, addons etc. locally and internationally?
Lol, after this mouthful I would say Mxiii to answer in short

@Phrozin: With that *comprehensive* lineup of devices, which services/websites are you using to stream from? Are you managing to successfully stream 720p or higher content?

@ Yotch:) , I must be honest here:whistle: I currently have 2mb line with Telkom alas. So regarding streaming I mainly stream Sd content. What I can do without problems are the following on M8 and Mx2, Netflix(only need 100kbps for sd tested,so can run 2 streams @ full 2mb line speed), Hulu is the same, but saw that on hd(720p) that it struggles. Youtube is fine as well on both and @ 720p I need to allow to buffer a bit. Tested Shush.se and it worked flawless on Mx2 @ 360p, however I ran into problem with flash on M8(tried Dolphin with hacked flash, but bombs out in full screen-known kitkat problem).

The Mx2 did the best with flash based streaming on web browser. Via Xbmc the 1channel add on is my trusty favorite(still on sd streams). I believe I could stream higher, but the problem I think is my Isp with it's line(our DsLAM failed last week at exchange).
I'm moving to a Fibre->Wireless connection in 1 months time and will give my feedback again(very stable speed/ping/low latency connection).

I also have to add that when I stream from my local Server/Nas I do it via Ethernet and streamed a 1080P (15gb) UP animation movie flawless on both. I jumped forward and back a lot of times as well.(only problem is on the M8 with a slight interlace glitch on moving animation, rectified by jumping 5sec back or forth via arrow on mouse-known 1.8Rom problem will be fixed in future update)). When I tried that on the M8 via Wifi it was horrendous lag(could be interference on wifi channel-distance is 10m from Wifi router in other room). Router is full 300mbps N
I do suggest Ethernet rather than wifi,my 2c.
The M8 could've gotten a better Wifi antenna ,but there is a mod for it(not for amateurs-be warned:twisted:):D

For those who want to see the WiFi antennae(that what looks like a yellow T-shirt):

For those with Geniatech or MyGica ATV devices, theres an update that has vastly improved performance on my ATV400 device.

The new interface is lightning fast, 7seconds to boot from cold.

Ok after using Android TV for a few weeks some feedback. Main requirement was XBMC and it does this very well but not perfect. Now and again the video becomes jerky and a I have to hit the quick rewind button to rectify it. Unit has frozen twice after pausing. Had to power off to fix. Also the one day I switched it on and it had lost all its settings. But still way better than WDTV.

Has anyone Successfully mounted a network share (samba or NFS) in Android? I've tried with Busy Box and Mount Manager, Mount manager refuses to load the CIFS.ko module that I have. Any suggestions @Yotch @avsupply

Hi dualmeister

The firmware on your box is still in Beta. If you've lost your settings, it's the perfect time to try a newer version

Here is the download link -> https://googledrive.com/host/0B4FNwq1C49hvX1Y1bHFTY0ZvUEk/OpenELEC-G18REF_MX2-4.1.2.zip

HowTo Update

Something else you should consider is the cronicorrey Gotham release, as they have always been very stable, available here -> https://goo.im/devs/CronMod/MX_LINUX-1.01-G18REF_MX2REF-update.zip

Thanks @avsupply, but I think that is to share your Android folder as a SMB share for other networked devices? I want to do the opposite. Mount a network share in Android

Just made an impulse purchase of an Amazon firetv. Dunno if it was a bum move, but need something my wife and kid can use without fiddling around with stuff

100%

I believe acorn's app suggestion can create and mount samba shares

Failing that, see this thread -> http://tinyurl.com/nhugte9

I've shared folders on the android box with SambaDroid and can access them from the outside, I've never needed to do it the other way around though.

Have you tried Cifsmanager?
