The Droid TV thread

How's this one :)

MXQ Pro Amlogic S905 4K Ultimate HD KODI Android 5.1 Lollipop TV Box Quad Core 2.0GHz H.265 Hardware Decoding

Operating System Android 5.1 Lollipop
CPU S905 Cortex A53 Processor 2.0GHz
GPU Penta-Core ARM Mali-450
RAM 8GB NAND FLASH
ROM 1GB DDR3

Not great, only 1GB RAM.
Nand flash not faster EMMC?
No wifi antennae, internal antennas usually have issues if not close to a router.
Any heatsink or extra capacitors on the board to help with overheating issues?
Who is the manufacturer of the device or no name company, then firmware updates might be an issue.
If you want to buy it, you are going to wait until Feb next year.
It is on presell until 30/11/2015 then another 2 weeks before ship-out then another 2 months airmail shipping to SA and to clear customs.
They don't offer DHL to SA, only TNT but with TNT your admin fees are over R400 excluding customs. That's why I'll never use TNT again.

Using the AVSupply firmware, MyGica582, Kodi Isengard and things are starting to break...

1. Supersport App no longer works, just throws an unexpected error when trying to stream anything
2. DSTV Now doesn't work with a DRM error

So I'm stuck watching the rugby in my bedroom on the laptop which was replaced by the MG582, much to the amusement of the GF

3. Seeking in Kodi is completely borked
4. HEVC x265 files give 100's of dropped frames and the audio goes out of sync constantly.

Any recommendations to fix this? Because I'm starting to get annoyed. Please be patient with me if we go down the firmware route though, I've never done it before

Have you managed to get the SuperSport App and/or DSTV Now fixed on your MG582?

Get DSTV NOW working by installing the stock standard AVSupply firmware and then downloading "Build Prop Editor" from the play store and editing "media.amplayer.widevineenable=false" to "media.amplayer.widevineenable=true", reboot and it should work.

SS app still won't work though.

There's also a firmware from MyGica themselves that JVanD mentions a few pages back which works for SS and Now but it can screw with the wifi so was a no-go area for me

/countdown before it stops working

I don't think DSTV are actively blocking these boxes, the boxes just don't have the right stuff enabled... And once MyGica release a proper GMS firmware that doesn't break the wifi then the box is a fully Android certified device and there's nothing really DSTV can do about it.

i got an issue, which i have already emailed Jacque so waiting on his response. but maybe somebody would know what might be the issue.

i have an MXQ, which is connected via wifi. Last night i tried to download file less than i would say 40mb in size. i tried this file about 8 times, and on each occasion i got half way with the download and the media player would freeze up. so i thought okay, let me connect via lan cable, but same thing happened.

now, i have no idea if its the wifi thats causing the player to freeze up, or if its the player. When i have a connection, my router lights flashes, but when thise freezing happens, my lights turn solid green, and there is no connection, until i restart the media player and try the download again. After the reboot, the same thing happens again, and i would have to restart.

i have even deleted Kodi off the box, as i thought maybe it was this, as my missus reported, that she watched a movie and a few series and it froze on her as well. so i thought okay, remove the external drive and try again. Alas, same thing again, froze.

my only remaining thing to try tonight, is to switch off my router, and then play something, and then see if i get any freeze ups from the box.

sorry for the long explanation, but hope somebody can advise. I am waiting on Jacque as well. :)

You should try opening your box and see if the wifi soldering hasn't come loose.
Also check the heatsink and see if overheating is not an issue(this is the biggest cause of freezes on tv boxes).
Try playing videos with a small USB fan blowing cool air over the device and see if the freezes still occur.
If using a USB harddrive check that you are using a 2A power supply or higher as only a 1A power supply will have problems with connected devices and playing videos. Use a multimeter to test as you can't always trust what's written on a Chinese power adapter.
Also check you have enough free space left on the device as streaming can cache temp files on the device and use up space.
Make sure your Kodi setup is no more than 500mb, the bigger and more addons are installed the more unstable it can become.
Also try changing your wifi router's channel.

How do you change router channel?

You type your router's ip address into a browser.
then log in
usually admin admin as username and password.
There should be a sticker under your router or you can search the web for the particular router's ip address.
eg. DLink is 10.0.0.2
other routers are usually 192.168.1.1 so something like that
Then go to wireless settings in your routers control panel.

I can't get the YouTube app on my MXIII to play HD video. When I try to change the quality setting the max I can select is 360p.
Is there I can get it to play full HD?

I did a search online, and it looks like it's a common problem on Android tablets and smartphones

The one suggestion was to download an older version of the youtube app, or use the browser version running in dekstop mode

Here is a link to the 3.55 version they say works -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1117304&d=1339241203

It is a very old version of youtube so I'm not sure it will work on the MXIII

So I got pointed this way.

Been streaming youtube , Netflix, hulu and play some media files on my ps4.

But I want something that when SO wants to watch, I don't have to stop gaming.
So I am looking for a device that can stream those and I can plug my external into it and play media files.

So which device is the better one?
Roku?
Amazon Fire TV?
MyGica?
MXQ?

thanks

Thanks in advance

Been using the MyGica with absolutely no problems at all for the last 10 or so months. Have a 1TB drive attached to it and its running SPMC (Kodi) with no issues, plays all files i throw at it (incl MKV). Streaming Netflix as well and if I need to watch some Youtube i can cast to it from my phone.

I have both apple and Roku boxes , I tried mygica and I personally think they are all much of a muchness although I find that the wife and kids seem to find their way around the Roku without screaming for help every five minutes ... I guess for that reason I would say the Roku pips the the others to the line . The Apple is a nice piece of kit but it comes with the usual Apple limitations that really can be frustrating

Thank you AVSupply. This version works. It doesn't show if the stream is 720p or 1080p but it is HD.

Playing via the browser results in the video playing in slow motion but the sound is normal.

Jut got a new phone now I've forgotten the app I need to remote control kodi? help please
