It finally arrived. I'll open everything up and test that DSTV Now app as soon as I get some downtime, most probably tomorrow.

Yeah I went all out for the 500GB version. :D

I was actually told to wait and not commit seeing as the Shield "will be discontinued because a new model is soon to be released". That might well turn out to be the case or just complete bollocks. In any case, I've always wanted one so I pulled the trigger.

Congrats, who did you order it through and how did you get it delivered to SA? Also, what was the duties and taxes like? I've ordered a second hand 16gb unit plus a remote control through Amazon Warehouse and having it delivered to my parcel forwarder and then on to me.

PS. Keep us posted about DSTV Now and Supersport compatibility.

Amazon. US. It was handed over to Aramex couriers.
Customs duties were paid up front (Global Shipping Program, or whatever it's called). Those fees amounted to $93.42, of which $12.56 has subsequently been refunded to me.


BTW, I'm looking now and I can't seem to find any new/sealed 500GB units for the price I bought it. So looks like I ordered just in time.

Those apps don't work on Lollipop firmware 90% of the time.
On phones & tablets you will have no problems getting them to work.

Or are you using KitKat firmware?
If you are you won't be able to use the latest Kodi 17 or SPMC or any versions after that as they abandoned KitKat firmware.
All the features in the new Kodi's require the Lollipop framework and video engine to work correctly.
You will then have to stay on old outdated Kodi 16 that has lots of bugs including IPTV streaming.

People should start bad reviews on Google Play and hellopeter so that Multichoice updates their DSTV Now app for Lollipop support on non touch screen devices. Eg. Showmax works on lots of Lollipop firmware devices that DSTV Now doesn't work on and they come from the same company.
 
Yes it is running kitkat. Is it possible to get the required DRM for the 585?
What would be a better alternative in the same price range?
 
Multichoice should really update their DSTV Now app to work on Lollipop non touch devices.
In a few weeks people will have to make a trade off of either running Kodi 17(as it won't be able to run on KitKat, only Lollipop) or stay on KitKat so DSTV Now can still work on some devices.
Most people will choose to have Kodi working.
 
Hey guys!

I can't tell you how many hour I've spent reading these threads to make a decision but I still need a bit of advice.

I've got a budget of R4000 to buy two media streamers.

I'm very open to suggestions. My only requirements are:

Netflix HD support
Plex
YouTube HD support
Kodi

Showmax and 4K would be a plus but not essential.

My wife has an iPhone, I'm using a S7 Edge and my Plex media server runs off a MacBook Pro so I'm not tied to any particular ecosystem.

I'm also not necessarily worried about access to foreign streaming services.

What would you guys recommend?

Oh, and my initial thoughts were an Apple TV 4 side loaded with Kodi downstairs, and cheaper (R1500 max) Android TV device in the bedroom.

Again, not sure what Android TV is best in that price bracket.
 
I've got the M8S android box that is pretty good.
Paid 1399 iirc.
8gig and 2gig ram.
