The Droid TV thread

Only 3 Android boxes can deliver what you are looking for (Showmax is an unknown though)

1. Nvidia Shield TV (Android TV) - starts at $199 (if you want a remote instead of just a game controller then add $49)
2. Xiaomi Mi Box US version (Android TV) - $69
3. Amazon Fire TV 4k version (Amazon customised Android) - $90 (Fire TV stick has limited connectivity - $40)

Any touch based only apps would need an air mouse. Also no other Android box delivers Netflix HD.

Roku can't deliver on your Kodi and Showmax requirements

Apple TV is too limited for my liking.
Oh, you forgot the mighty MxIII.

Eeish! H265 is amazing, can't the chip decode it?

Unless you convert it to h264 or transcode it, but that defeats the purpose and needs a second device running 24/7.
Also Kodi on the Apple store doesn't allow the use of addons, you will see it's not possible to install addons, that was one of Apple's requirements before the app could be put in their store.

No addons makes it hobbled, the sideloaded Kodi app for TV 4 seems fully functional though?

Haven't touched my media player since I upgraded to a Smart TV. Built in Plex app to Plex Media Server. Plays everything up to 4K 60P HEVC. Just doesn't do 10 Bit HDR :)

Ordered items from banggood. Just picked them up from the post office. Will post the timelines and cost later

Ok so DSTV Now is not compatible with the Shield. Not only does it not work but it doesn't show up at all in the store to download.
I had to sideload the app. SideLoad Launcher in conjunction with ES File Explorer. Didn't work. Booted me straight to the home screen.
I got quite a few other "not supported" media apps on there to work, but not that one.
So yeah, major bummer.
I have some good news for you Vernon. I received my Shield yesterday and had the same issue. I managed to find two workarounds:

1. Stream DSTV Now through Chrome (sideloaded). Navigate to http://now.dstv.com/LiveTv in Chrome. If necessary you can select to use the desktop version of the page. Click on the desired channel -> select open in Chrome and the window will load with a still picture. Click the pause button and then the play button and the stream will start. This method is a bit clunky and after changing channels it stopped working and I needed to clear the cache in Chrome to try more channels.

2. With the DSTV Now app sideloaded. Navigate to http://now.dstv.com/LiveTv in Chrome. Click on the desired channel -> select open in DSTV Now and through some dark magic the DSTV Now app opens and you can continue to use the entire app as normal while using the right controller as a mouse.

Enjoy...
