So this is the problem with someone misquoting you. The interaction was not recent but ten years ago. Way before I started atthe FPI.

But you recently wrote about it perhaps? Since I am not a Finweek subscriber I cannot read the whole of this:

haha what total BS. I really love this "to him it was his essential entertainment and actually saved him money, "

How the **** do you have ESSENTIAL entertainment when you are cash strapped and cannot put food on the table. David Kop you must seriously consider getting out of the financial planning game because you seem to be a bit slow. Expert nogal.

I was not consulted on this peice mybb took another article i wrote and quoted out of context. The client was not financially distressed and could easilty afford both options. Part of looking at a budget is looking at potential cuts to use else where. In this case based on the persons circumstances, it was not neccesary to cut. That is acdtually the aricle i wrote. One must be careful to follow general advice without considering personal circumstances.

I did not consent to have my name attached to the article. They used a piece that I wrote for collective insights and totally quoted out of context
Then I retract my disgusting part... I'll edit the post for clarity...

Its nice to have a person named in an article like this come and give the real story...

Wow....just wow.

The last bit of journalistic integrity that MyBB may have had, just got flushed down the toilet.

I hope you demand a public apology re. this and don't just let it slide.

We've been moaning about these schitty and obvious advertorials, badly disguised behind shoddy "news articles" for quite a while now, and usually were reprimanded like naughty school children by the "editorial" staff.

and now MyBB:

The DStv myth

DStv is often seen as a luxury which can be cut when times are tough, but financial planning expert David Kop warned that this decision can cost some people more than what they save.

Kop told Finweek that he recently had a consultation with a client in financial distress and advised him to cut DStv to free up some money.
DSTV has paid for this article. Last month they were down in premium subscribers, all of a sudden they are up?? Nice try Multichoice.

Absolutely disgusting article to shamelessly sell DSTV.

There are people out there who need genuine financial help. If they came across this nonsense it would encourage reckless spending because they wouldn't be able to differentiate between wants and needs based on their personal circumstances.

Thank you @DavidKop for clearing things up. MyBB needs to come clean on the true motive behind all these DSTV 'articles', and issue an apology for this particular piece of junk.

It's a crying shame that the site that championed consumerism in SA has well and truly crossed over to the other side to defend the interests of greedy corporates...

Thanks for your clarifications here, this was blatant plagiarism then.
Plagiarism would be a compliment, because that would have at least gotten the original message across.

What we have here is plain and simple trash, a shameless exercise in selling DSTV. And should be treated with the disgust it deserves, especially given the origins of this site...

I checked MyB's Wikipedia page, now. Saw there is a few things that got removed/changed that places them in better light. There were a "Controversies" paragraph, where a lot was removed/changed. Probably some PR work, to make things look good.

They changed it not too long ago, got this from waybackmachine (web archive), snap from middle last year : https://web.archive.org/web/20190704075120/En.wikipedia.org/wiki/mybroadband

There are some interesting additions there because of this article. @rpm you really need to do something about this. This is hurting the forum. We can't stand for this type of slack articles

Sound logic under normal circumstances where one may simply be considering the value proposition of one vs the other, however in the case provided it was explicitly stated that the client was in "financial distress". I merely pointed out that if a household is indeed in financial trouble that surely DSTV is a logical choice when it comes to culling costs if one is to prioritize. If a household is on a tight budget I'd just as easily suggest that a fast uncapped internet connection would be an area to consider in reducing expenses.
To present DSTV premium as somehow an essential part of a stretched budget makes little sense to me and I think this may be what many readers take issue with as it just seems like a blatant attempt to counter the argument that some have made in terms of getting a sports fix elsewhere.
The article is poorly worded. Major problem here is that there's no context. For one person financial distress may be not being able to pay for their kid's education while another it's not being able to pay for the Lambo. While one person sees meat as a luxury another sees internet and dstv as one. I view it in this context.

I've reported this post.

I'm actually disgusted that MyBB has gone so far as to back the idea that spending on non essentials when in financial distress is a good idea. MyBB has come up with some wild ideas and some questionable content and articles for advertising but this one crosses the line. Someone that can't keep their finances in order already has worsening problems in life and now MyBB are willing to support spending frivalously in order for them to make some content revenue.

We all gave MyBB stick when they started posting adverts when they always said they would but they are now accepting money in return for posting content that is morally wrong.
