The Electronic Music Thread

Been so bored with my music collection of late and stumbled across a DVD with trance that was in one of our PC's at the office.

Gave it a listen and really enjoyed it. Never much been into trance and dance tunes, but the tracks have been setting in and at least make a difference to my usual listening.

Stuff like:
Mylo's Rough Guide to Trance
Paul Van Dyk
Terrace Mix
This is Radio SoulWax

Don't have a clue on this genre of music, but I'm enjoying listening to it.

Hi i just rediscoverd this, whilst watching Ghost in the shell(an anime, if you must ask.)

Anyway, it's a russian vocalist who just has an absolutely beautiful voice, together with some very cool electronic instrumentation.

Her name is Origa.

I got the new Booka Shade yesterday. Quite different from Movements. Gonna have to give it a few more listens before I have an opinion.

Hi you lazy bastards(meaning PP since it's your thread!) i demand you to listen to this track from Bela Fleck, even it's not all that electronic(in fact almost not at all.)

Oh, and PP, i only now see you asked about that Origa track.Have you been able to get a decent quality track?I doubt it'll be in cd shops here.

Oh, i see the link, well done!

I see the mp3 is listed as Yoko Kanno, who is the composer i presume? Is it officialy his(?) track.

Oh and damn with the better quality i'm hearing so much more detail!

Yeah, altho i'd say the song is the most awesome thing about the whole series. The Ghost in the shell movies are better.

I think it's time to introduce the god of music(not all of it, consider him one of many)and at the moment my idol, Mike Patton.

Some of the bands/projects he's been involved in:

Mr. Bungle
Faith no More
Fantomas
Tomahawk
Peeping Tom
Dillinger Escape Plan
etc.

I should warn you i'm gonna flood this place with stuff from him, so be prepared:

(Mr Bungle-Sweet Charity, make sure you listen up to the chorus starting at 1:40)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLNA2JqtM_k (Peeping Tom-Kill the dj)

I'll put up some more l8ter.What i want to point out, is that the stuff posted here are some of his more accessible tracks. He has, especially with Mr Bungle and DEP, composed VERY avant garde music, also being quite heavy.

Enjoy and tell me what ya think.

Gimmik
IDM, Toytronic, Ambient

Reminiscent of Boards Of Canada, with its intrinsic melodic qualities, and similarities in constitution, or Autechre, with its organic shapes, Slow Motion Process seems inhabited by nature - liquid beats and drop-like sounds form the core body of this record. No bleeps or noise terrorism in sight. The sophisticated rhythmic constructions are wrapped in luscious waves of warm synthetic silk. From time to time, a voice sample appears, almost unnoticeably moving within the spectre, cloud in an otherwise perfect sky. Or an abrasive resonance, quickly overpowered by the tide. Sounds are carefully chosen, assembled, and disassociated. The crickets opening RC Units, or the robotic gibberish that follows, the marbles at the beginning of Monitor, similar to the one heard on Autechre’s Krib, imperceptibly morphing into beat, the long reverb at the end of Form2… The focus here is on undefined cinematic landscapes, leaving behind all notions of time or spatial awareness. The listener is surrounded by complex micro organic life forms-like structures, living in symbiosis in wide-open spaces, interacting with each other. A theory of evolution devoid of any human interference.

Challenging and beautifully crafted, Slow Motion Process is a most promising first release from Gimmik. Haidinger is already proving to be one of the most exiting talents of his generation, taking electronic music far beyond any existing boundaries.

Similar to Wisp (recommended earlier in this thread). A mixture of more up-beat IDM and ambient, but all-in-all very bubbly and "cute", playful etc. Highly recommended. ;)

Chequerboard
Electronic, Electrocoustic

Chequerboard is the nomme de guerre of Irish musician & visual artist John Lambert who blends classically tinged acoustic guitar with glitchy electronica. Delicate, detailed and emotionally charged the songs are often underpinned by found sounds and intercut with textured samples.

Chequerboard’s debut album ‘Gothica’ was released on US label Reverb Records in 2003 followed by the mini album ‘Dictaphone Showreels’ on Lazybird in 2005. The new Chequerboard album titled ‘Penny Black’ was released on Lazybird in early 2008.

Mainly guitar over indie-minimal-electronic, chilled stuff. Could appeal to a mature audience.

Flint Glass
IDM, Industrial, Dark Ambient

Gwenn Trémorin played bass guitar in a certain number of new-wave bands before he joined Stadium. Stadium was a noisy pop musical experiment, whose sound was influenced by such acts as Sonic Youth, Sebadoh and My Bloody Valentine.
Trémorin describes himself as a person who has always been into very different kinds of music. As an adolescent, he was fond of new-wave bands like The Cure, Joy Division or Modern English. Indeed, melancholy of their music still has a strong influence on his own work.

More recently he took a real interest in various types of experimental electronic music, with groups like Arovane, Beefcake, Black Lung, Aphex Twin, Ammo, Panacea, Somatic Responses, Pan Sonic, Vromb… among many others. Inspired by their “peculiar” aural experiments and also by his friend Matthieu Maire from Celluloid Mata (who had just created his label with Steph Alt, “Vaccum”), Trémorin decided to start his own label.
Thus, in December 2000, Brume Records was born. Under the pseudonym of Flint Glass, he made his debut with the full-length album ‘Hierakonpolis’. And indeed, he could not introduce himself in a more convincing way.
This debut is described by critics as representing some of the most innovative stylings towards rhythmic noise and dark ambient genres. Production-wise this is quite a dark recording, staying clear of the crisp, punchy approach of artists such as Mlada Fronta, for example.

Helios
IDM, Ambient, Electronic

Some people are natural-born musicians. Keith Kenniff is one of those people. At a young age, both he and his brother began to learn classical guitar, bass and drums under their father’s teaching, and before too long Keith decided to further pursue drums. He played in a variety of touring bands, from rock to jazz and classical, and took influence from each situation, learning from the successes and inevitable failures, discovering his musical likes and dislikes. He was finally drawn to study percussion at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music.

He took a keen interest in film, taking time to study it whenever he could to broaden his knowledge of independent and world cinema and filmscore. Through his interests in music and film, Keith developed a sense of space and restraint, which are evident in his musical projects.

His primary musical venture is the solo project ‘Helios’, showcasing his skill in percussion, his delicate touch on the guitar, his measured and spacious songwriting, and his self-taught electro-acoustic production.

Miami-based label merck released his first album entitled ‘Unomia’ which went on to receive international acclaim.

Relaxing "go to sleep" music. ;)

Abfahrt Hinwil
IDM, Electronic, Experimental

Abfahrt Hinwil is Chris Cunningham (co-owner of Toytronic Records and no relation to the music video director) and Martin Haidinger (AKA Gimmik). Most of their songs shift between soft ambient and driving electro, with gorgeous techno melodies throughout. They have a full-length CD on Toytronic called Links Berge Rechts Seen (“Mountains On The Left Lakes On The Right”) and a few vinyl-only releases as well.

Gimmik helps bring us some more playful uppity stuff. ;)
