The Fallout 3 Thread

Ok finished the game today. My final thoughts are that its a very good game and much better than oblivion but it isn't epic or close to the great rpg's I have played.

As far as exploration its quite open but in other aspects its rather closed. There isn't nearly as many options to solve individual quests as in the original fallouts.

The 3person animations is also a major let down.

Things the game got right is the characters. There are some very interesting ones in the game and none of those generics ones like oblivion had.

The character design and levelling was good for the most part.

Vats is another major plus point. I thought it was very well design and worked very well. I like the fact that while not going the turned based route entirely like Fo1+ Fo2 they also didn't turn it into a fps.

I have already touched on the fact that I disliked the censorship compared to the previous games.

The endings are terrible. What happened to the 200 different endings they promised us?? Did bethesda just think nobody will notice how generic and uninspired the endings were??

Overall I give it an 8/10

So... I went ahead and finished the main quest ... I thought it was disappointingly short - could easily have been finished in a sitting. At least the side-quests proved entertaining enough.

It also feels like interaction with the factions (Enclave, Outcasts, Brotherhood) was very linear and not nearly "deep" enough. As though they just included them to say they did.

I agree wholeheartedly - ending(s) were awful. I tried it a few different ways and the emotional guilt trip with an evil ending is lame. "Sadly he--" or "Unfortunately he--" Bah! It's like they're ever-so subtly suggesting that whatever ending you choose which isn't "Holier-than-thou" is wrong when that's not the point of a non-linear RPG at all. And of the 40-odd good deeds you've done they show maybe 5 in the ending?

I think they brought Fallout to life in a 3D world and that they did that brilliantly. But story-wise it's Bethesda any way you slice it. As for levelling, I think it could've been better. I would've preferred high-level mobs or whatever to actually be DIFFICULT to kill and that there'd be an observable difference in levelling other than perhaps one or two perks which MAKE a difference.

I also agree again - it's much better than Oblivion or any work previously done by Bethesda, but as an RPG Fallout lacks a lot, but it's still a good game.

I also rate it as 8/10...

It was an entertaining, yet slightly monotonous pleasure...

I enjoyed the game as well, though the storyline was sadly lacking in depth when compared to the old Fallout games :(

*nod*

Doesn't compare... While playing it, you know... it "feels" like Fallout... But the longer you play it and the more you explore and interact with characters and the environment... It begins to feel... detached.

I'm conflicted. One part of me wants to say that this isn't Fallout and that it sucks immensely, but at the same time another part of me enjoyed parts of it that I just wish had MORE to them.

It's like it gets so close to being Fallout and just as it gets to within fingers' reach it ricochets back to being Bethesda :(

I'm glad I've played it, and I'm glad I've bought it... And if Bethesda make another, chances are I'll buy that too... But it doesn't change the fact that Bethesda have done a great job of mimicking the original Fallout, but failed admirably at the originality which WAS Fallout.

Couldn't have said it better myself...

*blush* Fanks... Is just the trooth :p

This review gives a better view imho than most of the mainstream reviews did. I don't agree with them on vats but the rest is accurate.

Thank you for the review! I'm reading it now and I had completely forgotten about the most laughable part of the game:

n Fallout 3, a fairly important segment of the gameplay has to do with radiation interaction, which can be contacted either by using irradiated consumables (most of them), as well as drinking out of sinks or... toilets. Whoever thought it’s a good idea for the main character to be dipping into dirty WC water, radiation aside, I have no friggin’ idea.

Edit: I love this:

To me, Fallout 3 is Bethesda's best game yet, but it's got more holes than a sinking ship. It's a perfect symbol for contemporary games: oversimplified, too accessible and way too commercial. The clever, edgy dialogues are gone, along with the complex relationships and the depth of the game world, replaced by a flawed visual feast, generic conversations and a gameplay fit for the masses.

An interesting side effect of Fallout 3’s release was that many players who were unfamiliar with the series decided to give the first two titles a try in order to “get it”. Which lead to a worrying amount of people registering on forums and writing things like “I can’t get out of that cave at the start of Fallout. This game is too damn hardcore / difficult.”

The Fallout games aren’t really difficult. Least of all hardcore. However, they do demand a minimum amount of logic and thought from the player. Compared to Mass Effect or Oblivion, they don’t push you towards the end. You need the determination and a minimum degree of inventive thought to make your way up in the world, and towards your own objectives.

This is perhaps Fallout 3’s biggest failure: it’s not nearly complex or cerebral enough for the role in role-playing game to really shine.

This is a brilliant review! Thanks stefan9!!!!

From the guide:

Todd Howard: We made Ron Perlman say "War. War never changes" about 40 times, with different cadences. We couldn't stop smiling. We even made him do every word separately. After asking to say "War" again, he replied, "it's a three-letter word guys, I think we got it."

Found this...

Games for Windows DLC kicks off with Fallout 3

Service also described as an 'integral part' of many titles.

Microsoft has confirmed that Fallout 3 will be the first title to offer DLC through the newly announced Games for Windows LIVE Marketplace.

Pete Hines, vice president of public relations and marketing for Bethesda Softworks commented: "Games for Windows LIVE helps us expand the Fallout 3 universe and bring the full experience directly to gamers. Through the Marketplace we now have a no-nonsense way to deliver updates and great downloadable content. It's really a complete package, and a great fit for Fallout 3."

Other titles, both current and coming soon, that offer support for Games for Windows LIVE include Grand Theft Auto IV, Quantum of Solace, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, Red Faction: Guerrilla and Battlestations: Pacific.

They charged us for the oblivion dlc they will do the same with fallout. Bethesda are not like CdProkjekt were you get all additional content for free.

Bethesda are very consolised in their thinking in terms of extra content.

Just got my copy:) I have a question... What is the quickest way the earn caps? And what characters do you guys know of that are able to join you? So far I only got Jericho on my team for Megaton

Hey Fallout 3 players
I haven't played any of the older Fallout games and I'm wondering is this game still a good starting point? Will I not feel like something is missing?

I just finished the main quest of Fallout 3...Wow..thats all I can say
BUT
Now that I have finished the main quest of the game, I want to continue doing the hundreds of other side quests, but after the end game movie, the credits roll and there is no option to continue? What must I do?
