Fisker Ocean

Fisker Inc. - passionate creator of the world's most sustainable electric vehicles and advanced mobility solutions - revealed its Fisker Ocean SUV at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Chairman and CEO Henrik Fisker detailed the Fisker Ocean's design philosophy and explained why it will be the most sustainable and innovative vehicle available when it starts production on Nov. 17, 2022 - exactly one year after the LA Auto Show press conference.

"Our mission is to create the world's most innovative and sustainable vehicles that are also affordable, and it all starts with the Fisker Ocean as we fully embrace a clean future for all," Fisker said, as he kicked off the first manufacturer event of the show.

The Fisker Ocean is being manufactured by Magna-Steyr at a carbon-neutral factory in Graz, Austria. The base Fisker Ocean Sport trim level is priced at $37,499, before federal and state tax credits. The Fisker Ocean Ultra is $49,999, and the Fisker Ocean Extreme is $68,999. The first 5,000 vehicles produced will be Fisker Ocean One, also priced at $68,999.

Segment-leading estimated range and performance from two battery cell chemistries

Fisker estimates that the EPA range of the front-wheel-drive, single-motor Fisker Ocean Sport will be 250 miles on a single charge, using a lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery cell chemistry in Touring Range packs to be supplied by CATL. EPA Ranges for the all-wheel-drive, dual-motor Fisker Ocean Ultra and Fisker Ocean Extreme are estimated at 340 miles and 350-plus miles, respectively.

This is the production-ready Fisker Ocean electric SUV

The fast one will do 0-60mph in 3.6secs, while the long-range one promises 350-plus miles

This is the Fisker Ocean SUV, but you can’t buy it just yet. Unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show, boss Henrik Fisker detailed the ‘production-intent’ version of his long-teased electric car.

So basically it’s the one you will be able to buy when it goes on sale next year. Prices start at $37,499 for the entry-level ‘Sport’ version (before any incentives), through $50k for the ‘Ultra’ spec and finally a whisker under $69k for the ‘Extreme’ and ‘One’ versions; indeed, the first 5,000 Oceans will be in ‘One’ spec.

The company that builds G-Classes for Merc and a couple of Jags and BMWs – Magna Steyr – will manufacture the Ocean, while batteries are made in collaboration with a company called CATL. The Ocean Sport promises 250+ miles of range and utilises but a single motor, while both Ultra and Extreme get AWD dual-motor setups and 340+ and 350+ miles of claimed range respectively.

All sounding a bit serious? The most expensive ones are unsurprisingly the fastest, clocking a 0-60mph time of 3.6secs and 550bhp. The Ultra gets 540bhp and 0-60mph in 3.9secs, while the lowliest Sport gets 275bhp and a 0-60mph time of 6.9secs. Probably a goldilocks trim level yet to be unearthed in there, one suspects.

There’ll be various drive modes of course, torque vectoring and the ability go off-road, too. All will run on 20s and special Bridgestones, though 22in wheels are optional. There’s lot of onboard assistance in the form of many sensors, while inside its fully vegan: recycled materials including old fishing nets, old t-shirts and renewed rubber.

There’s space for five, and a one-button push lowers all the windows and opens the sunroof. This is called ‘California Mode’. There’s another one called ‘Hollywood Mode’ that rotates the 17.1in central touchscreen from portrait into landscape when parked for the full La La Land experience. Indeed, there’s a 16-speaker, 500w setup with a subwoofer (remember those, Nineties kids?) to really give it some.

Fisker Ocean revealed in production guise as plush EV SUV

The Fisker Ocean has officially been unveiled in production guise at this year’s Los Angeles motor show. This comes almost two years after the concept was teased as a competitor product for Tesla in the North American market.

The Fisker Ocean is available in three trims starting from $37 499 (approximately R589 600). The entry-level Sport trim makes use of a single lithium-ion battery pack attached to the front axle which produces 205 kW and 402 km of range. Key features on this trim include a 17,1-inch central rotating touchscreen infotainment system connected to the Fisker Premium sound system, a BigSky glass roof, autonomous emergency braking, digital rear-view mirror, smartphone app key and unique Sport interior trim.

Priced at $49 999 (approximately R785 600) is the Fisker Ocean Ultra which adopts a dual motor all-wheel drive layout with an optional Smart Traction package. This gives it a total power output of 403 kw and a range of 547 km. Key features added to this model are a 360 degree surround view, additional safety features and a bespoke Ultra interior trim option.

 
New 2022 Fisker Ocean gets production-spec debut in LA

European-built BMW iX3 rival will arrive in the UK in 2023, with sub-£30k price and up to 350 miles of range

The production version of the new Fisker Ocean electric SUV has been revealed at the Los Angeles motor show, a year before it goes into production for global sale.

To be produced by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, the Ocean will arrive in the UK in the second quarter of 2023, taking on the Audi Q4 E-tron and BMW iX3 with competitive performance figures, a raft of advanced technology and a range of up to 350 miles.

Pilot production will begin this week so that the necessary crash tests and homologation processes can get under way.

In terms of design, the Ocean stays true to the concept first shown in 2019, with Fisker committed to offering a "true SUV" rather than "yet another aerodynamic all-electric hatchback". Its slim lights, short overhangs and a wide stance are aimed at emphasising its road presence and give heavy clues as to the design of future Fisker models.

It remains a five-seater, and the company's commitment to sustainability extends to a "fully vegan" interior comprising reclaimed fishing nets, T-shirts and rubber. Fisker claims it's "the world's most sustainable electric vehicle".

Other highlights include California mode that lowers all the windows and retracts the roof to provide a convertible-style driving experience; a Limo mode that allows rear-seat passengers to control various vehicle functions; and a rotating 17.1in infotainment touchscreen that can be switched from portrait mode to landscape mode when the car is stopped.

Three trim levels will be available. Sport brings a 275bhp motor on the front axle for a 0-60mph time of 6.6sec; Ultra gets a motor on each axle, boosting output to 540bhp and cutting the sprint time to 3.9sec; and range-topping Extreme brings 550bhp and a 3.6sec 0-60mph time.

We chat to Henrik Fisker as his EV start up prepares the Ocean SUV for a global launch

Henrik Fisker has unveiled the production-ready version of his eponymous EV start-up company’s first model, the Ocean SUV, a year ahead of its global launch.

To be produced by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, the Ocean will arrive in the UK in the second quarter of 2023 with competitive performance figures, advanced technology and a range of between 250 and 350 miles.

Its design, five-seat interior and technical make-up are largely unchanged from the prototype first seen in 2019, right down to the convertible-style California Mode function and roof-mounted solar panel, and a rough starting price of £28,000 is expected.

We spoke to Fisker at the Los Angeles motor show to find out more about how he plans to succeed this time, following the demise of his earlier, Karma-making automotive business.

Have you been inspired by any other companies?

“Not really. We’re doing it differently to Tesla, for example. They’re building their own dealerships; we will have Experience Centres where you can go and see the vehicle, but we won’t service and deliver vehicles from these centres because generally they’re expensive real estate. So we’re trying to cut costs by putting our distribution centres outside the cities and making partnerships for service. All this has allowed us to cut costs for the customer.

“If there’s anybody that has inspired our business model when it comes to manufacturing, it’s probably Apple. They don’t build their own products; they spend all their efforts on customer features and solutions. That’s the way we’re doing it.”

What does the UK market mean to Fisker?

“The UK is among our top five in Europe. It’s very important, and I see a lot of growth there. Specifically, of course, because of London’s strict restrictions [on cars], we’ve already seen a lot of interest and reservations.

 
The curious case of Fisker vs the English weather

The new Fisker Ocean EV has a full-length solar panel in its roof that can add up to 1500 miles of range per year in ideal conditions – but “maybe not in England”, Fisker acknowledged. We will find out for ourselves how it copes with our grey skies when it arrives in the second quarter of 2023.

 
Stock take: Will the markets continue to back start-ups like Rivian?

Nascent EV firms have been attaining astronomical valuations for several years now, led by Tesla. Will it carry on forever?

The sky-high valuations of companies such as Arrival, Canoo, Lucid, Nio and even Tesla are already deflating. Of 23 electric vehicle manufacturer stocks tracked by the Financial Times in a chart entitled Electric Bubble Watch, all are down on their peaks, some by more than 70% as we went to print (including Arrival, Faraday Future, Lordstown and Workhorse).

In one crazy moment this year, Tesla was valued at more than the next nine largest manufacturers while selling fewer vehicles than Isuzu.

If you organise global car makers based on their market capitalisation (the combined price of publicly and privately held stock), Tesla still comes way out in front of Toyota, with a $1 trillion (£750 billion) valuation in a snapshot taken on 7 December. But are we entering a phase where the stock valuation begins to align more closely with the physical realities of the start-ups?

After Toyota comes Chinese EV and battery maker BYD, and then in sixth, ahead of General Motors, is electric car, truck and van maker Rivian, at $87bn (£65.7bn). California- based luxury EV maker Lucid is eighth, at $78bn (£58.9bn), just ahead of Ford at $76bn (£57.4bn). Chinese EV maker Nio is 14th, ahead of Honda. And Fisker, another Californian effort, ranks 36th, at $5.2bn (£3.9bn), ahead of Mazda.

The catalyst for this pricing was of course Tesla, which genuinely disrupted the global car market.

No one else making EVs is close, reckons Patrick Hummel, head of European car research for investment bank UBS.

“In 2021, Tesla has gapped away further from all others in terms of volume growth and [profit] margins, and its lead should be undisputed in 2022,” he wrote in an analyst’s note.

 
New 2022 Fisker Ocean set for European debut in Barcelona

European-built BMW iX3 rival will appear at the Mobile World Congress and will have a £34,990 price tag

The Fisker Ocean electric SUV will make its European debut to the public at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from 28 February to 3 March, with prices set to start from £34,990 in the UK.

The model was previously revealed at the Los Angeles motor show last year. It will be produced by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, arriving in the UK in the second quarter of 2023.

Fisker recently opened a European office in Munich, Germany, and a brand experience centre is set to follow in the country. It has forecast an annual sales figure of around 60k units in Europe.

"I couldn't be more excited to unveil the Fisker Ocean in Spain and present its unique combination of performance, value and technology to the European media and prospective owners", said CEO Henrik Fisker. "I'm particularly thrilled to announce the segment-leading range for the Fisker Ocean".

"Europe is essential to our company as we work towards the start of production in November at a carbon-neutral factory in Austria", Fisker said. "We aim to make the world's most sustainable vehicle and to start deliveries in Europe this year. Ultimately, we expect to sell 60,000 units annually in the region".

The Ocean is expected to take on the Audi Q4 E-tron and BMW iX3 with competitive performance figures, a raft of advanced technology and a range of up to 350 miles. The model has also undergone pilot production so the necessary crash tests and homologation processes can get under way.

The Fisker Ocean will cost from £34,990 in the UK

Henrik Fisker’s new electric SUV is coming to Europe with a minimum of 250 miles of range

Remember Fisker of Karma fame? Or should that be infamy? Well, it’s back with the Ocean SUV, and it has now been properly confirmed for Europe.

You can read all of the Ocean details by clicking these blue words, but essentially all you need to know now is that the European debut will be at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and when deliveries start later this year it’ll cost from £34,990 in the UK.

That price will be for the base spec, 275bhp Ocean Sport with its 250 miles of range. There’s no word on how much the 350-mile-plus, twin-motor 550bhp ‘Extreme’ will cost on our shores, but Fisker has already let slip that it’ll be around $69k in the US.

The Ocean will be built in Austria by Magna Steyr, and Henrik Fisker himself has mentioned a sales target of 60,000 cars per year in Europe.

 
New 2024 Fisker Pear is affordable, agile urban EV

Fisker opens reservations for its second model, which will sit alongside the larger Ocean

California-based Fisker will follow up the 2023 Ocean SUV with a five-seat urban EV called the Pear, which will go on sale in the US in 2024 from $29,900 (£22,000).

The name stands for Personal Electric Automotive Revolution, hinting at Fisker's ambition for the new model to be among the more accessible EVs on the market.

Like the larger Ocean, which will make its European debut later this month ahead of a launch next year, the Pear is claimed to combine "sustainability, technology and design into a digitally connected" package.

A top-down image gives little away, design-wise, but flared arches and wraparound light bars will be shared with the Ocean.

Its positioning as an "agile" urban-oriented proposition suggests Fisker is lining it up as a rival to cars like the Renault Zoe and Mini Electric. The firm says "sporty driving" and "clever storage" will be among its defining features.

Say hello to the intriguingly-named ‘PEAR’ – the Personal Electric Automotive Revolution. Retrofuturistic much? We hope the styling matches the name.

Fisker says that this second car will be an “agile urban EV” that will blend “sustainability, technology and design into a digitally connected, compact, five-passenger urban EV". Think we can safely assume it’ll be ‘urban’ then.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2024, with Fisker aiming for a starting price of $29,900 in the US before tax and incentives. Impressive.

 
Fisker Buyers Learned Nothing From Cyberpunk 2077, Continue To Preorder Unrevealed Cars

Preordering a car you’ve never seen is worse than buying a car without a test drive.

Preordering cars is all the rage now. Customers get the satisfaction that they’ll be the first to have something and the company gets an interest-free loan from you to keep things going until the car debuts. But preordering a car from a company with an unproven track record is bad, and even worse when you haven’t ever seen the car. But according to Automotive News, Fisker is claiming over 1,000 people have done just that and reserved a vehicle they never set eyes on.

To understand why this is such a risky action, you have to look at Fisker’s history. This isn’t its first go-around. After having a successful automotive design career, Henrik Fisker founded Fisker Automotive in late 2007. The company produced the Fisker Karma. But after burning through $1.4 billion and building just 2,450 Karma’s the company went bankrupt in 2014.

A Chinese company, Wanxiang Group, swooped in and bought all Fisker’s assets for just $149.2 million and continues to make the Karma (now called Karma Revero with its own set of troubles.) under the Karma Automotive name. Just two years after the bankruptcy, Fisker starts his second and current company Fisker Inc.

Now, Fisker has their EV crossover, the Ocean, coming. After its L.A. Auto Show debut in 2021, Fisker claims the Ocean is going into production in November. Its second EV, the Pear isn’t coming until 2024. But the company is already taking $250 reservations for it. Speaking in London, Fisker attempted to explain the reservations off as a way of proving to battery suppliers that they won’t get screwed by some start-up that’s going to go under. The model was previously revealed at the Los Angeles motor show last year. It will be produced by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, arriving in the UK in the second quarter of 2023.
