Performance variant of the Ranger pick-up truck has a 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel engine, upgraded suspension and six driving modes

Ford has revealed the Ranger Raptor, a high-performance variant of its Ranger pick-up truck with a 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel engine that provides 210bhp and 369lb ft.

Official performance figures are yet to be released, but the truck's punchier engine should allow a sub-10-sec 0-60mph time. The larger, 450bhp V6-engined F-150 Raptor achieves the sprint in 6.1sec, while the 3.2-litre TDCi-engined Ranger M-Sport Double Cab takes 10.6sec.

At the moment, the Ranger Raptor is being introduced to Asian markets only, but it's under consideration for American and European markets, including the UK. The model will not be shown at the Geneva motor show next month.

The Ranger Raptor's front suspension is upgraded to feature Fox Racing shock absorbers, while the rear set-up gains a new Watt's linkage system with coilovers. Off-road speed is a priority for the Ford Performance-developed model, so a set of knobbly BF Goodrich tyres have been specially developed for it.

The truck shares its 10-speed automatic gearbox, which has paddle shifters mounted on the steering column, with the facelifted Mustang and the F-150 Raptor. No manual option is available.

Ford has lifted the Ranger to give the Raptor variant a ground clearance of 283mm, while the front and rear tracks have been widened to 1710mm. The chassis has been modified to handle high-speed off-roading, while the brakes are now 332mm, up from 323mm. The calipers are larger than the standard model's, too, at 54mm.

There are no fewer than six selectable driving modes, with Normal and Sport the on-road modes. Sport tweaks gearshifts to be at higher revs and downshifts more readily when required.

The four off-road drive modes tackle different terrains: Grass, Gravel and Snow; Mud and Sand; Rock; and Baja, which brings the benefits of Sport while scaling back interference from the traction control for high-speed off-road driving.

The Ranger is key in Ford's UK commercial vehicle operations; with around 13,000 examples sold here last year, it made up 10% of the brand’s commercial vehicle sales and was the best-selling pick-up in 2017.

Meanwhile, the Transit Custom accounted for 60,000 sales, or just under half of Ford’s commercial vehicle registrations.

Although the Ranger Raptor isn’t yet confirmed for UK sale, Ford is expanding the Ranger line-up with a Ranger Black Edition that will go on sale in the first quarter of 2018, followed by another special edition in April.

A look at the “off-road” Ford Ranger coming to South Africa

The new South Africa-bound Ford Raptor Ranger was unveiled at a press event in Thailand on Wednesday.

“Meet the latest edition to the Ford Performance line-up, and the most epic Ranger we’ve engineered. The first-ever Ford Ranger Raptor,” said Ford South Africa in a social media post.

“The Ford Performance team is excited to extend the Raptor name from our flagship off-road performance F-150 to Ranger. Just like the F-150 Raptor, the Ranger Raptor builds upon the core capability of the range of vehicles it comes from and carries the unmistakable Ford Performance DNA appearance,” Ford said.

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel engine making 157kW of power and 500Nm of torque.

Measuring 1.87 metres tall (up 52mm), 2.18 metres wide (331mm wider) and 5.39 metres long (30mm longer), the Raptor raises its ground clearance to 283mm, 46mm higher than regular Rangers.

Colours include include lightning blue, race red, shadow black, frozen white, and hero colour, conquer grey.

It is unclear when the Raptor will launch in South Africa, or what its pricing will be, however it is likely to begin sales only in 2019.

Ford’s new Ranger Raptor: 5 fierce local bakkie rivals

One of the most important bakkie stories in South African history this week - the official reveal of Ford’s Range Raptor.

Due to be built in the greater Tshwane area, at Ford’s Silverton facility, the Ranger Raptor is a dedicated 2/3rds clone of its renowned American F-150 cousin. It’s not merely a warmed-over Ranger, this Raptor is a very specialised piece of kit, with components which differentiate it quite a bit from other Rangers.

Sports Fox racing dampers

At 283mm it has a good deal more ground clearance than other Rangers and not only is it going to clear more challenging off-road obstacles because of that, it’s going to be faster everywhere when you turn off the tarmac.

Behind each of those four wheels, are custom-build Fox racing dampers with coilovers.

It’s the calibre of stuff the automaker uses at the Dakar and for Baja desert racing in the US and what those Fox suspension components do, are keep all four wheels in contact with the terrain you are trying to race over, no matter how bumpy it gets, or how fast you are going.

Beyond the Fox suspension wizardry, Ranger Raptor doesn’t have a conventional live-axle at the rear, like all other Rangers. It uses a Watts-link instead, similar to what you find at the back of an Everest SUV, to ensure that even unladen, this bakkie’s rear remains planted.

With the quality of components and amount of engineering detail Ford’s applied to its Ranger Raptor project, there’s no doubt that in the dunes of Namibia, or red sand tracks of the Northern Cape, this bakkie is going to roll-over challenging terrain with greater ease and speed than any other production double-cab in SA.

Rangers owners will have a bakkie which is essentially the Porsche GT3 RS of double-cabs. Fox racing shocks are pedigree motorsport items and they’ll absolutely revolutionise the ride-quality and speed at which drivers can tackle punishing off-road terrain, without fatiguing themselves or damaging their bakkies.

Underwhelming performance figures... on paper

The one issue is its engine. Ford fans mercilessly mocked Amarok owners for years about their double-cabs being powered by a mere 2-litre diesel engine. The irony is, that Range Raptor has now become exactly that too: a 2-litre biturbo-diesel. It doesn’t produce much more power than a Ranger 3.2 (only 10 additional kilowatts) or much more torque (30 more Newtons).

If you are one of those people who absolutely lives by specific power outputs, and ignore handling and braking dynamics, Ranger Raptor’s 157kW and 500Nm are an underwhelming detail to its claim of being the ultimate performance double-cab bakkie. In the US there’s a very potent 2.7-litre Ecoboost V6 already in service with Ford’s F-150 bakkie and it makes 242kW. Kind of a no-brainer what Ford should have done – or is supposedly going to do in good time…

For now, in terrain that isn’t deep sand, Ford’s most keenly anticipated bakkie will have five very capable rivals to deal with. We list them.

Toyota Hilux 4.0 V6

Ford’s fiercest rival for dominance over the South African double-cab market, Toyota is also the only manufacturer which still offers customers the option of petrol power for its double-cab bakkies. This petrol-powered oddity is perhaps Hilux’s most unique selling point and paired to a six-speed automatic gearbox, its 4-litre V6 spins out 175kW and 376Nm. The Hilux wins if you are counting power but has a large deficit to Ranger Raptor’s torque.

VW Amarok V6

The bakkie which avenged all those 2-litre jokes VW double-cab owners suffered. Powered by a detuned 3-litre Audi V6 diesel, specifically adapted for running in hot and dusty conditions, Amarok V6 has the measure of Ranger Raptor on paper. Its V6 produces 180kW and 550Nm on overboost and with a slick 8-speed ZF gearbox, those outputs are converted to linear acceleration quite convincingly.

Mercedes X-Class 350d

Due for its official debut at the Geneva auto show in less than a month, this is the real Mercedes double-cab bakkie. Unlike the four-cylinder models, X350d has a proper Mercedes engine, the proven 3-litre V6 turbodiesel, which bests Ranger Raptor’s peak torque by 50Nm (with 550Nm) and it is going to be the most powerful diesel bakkie on sale in South Africa too. How powerful? Well, with 190kW, you won’t be overtaken any rival double-cab on the N1.

Toyota Land-Cruiser 79-Series 4.0 V6

Perhaps the only bakkie which could compete with Ranger Raptor’s hugely focussed off-road ability is Toyota’s adventuring dinosaur. Although the design has altered little from the 1980s (hence its unbreakable nature), the Land Cruiser double-cab does come with a very modern 4-litre V6 engine option. It’s a very lively petrol engine and at 170kW, notably more powerful than Ranger Raptor. That said, at 360Nm, it’s 140 Newtons worth of pulling power down on the Ford. And you must shift gears yourself with this one, depressing a clutch which feels more akin to a brake pedal.

Mercedes-Benz Unimog

Admittedly we are being flippant by including this but it is the grandest of all double-cabs you can buy in South Africa. The absolute last word in durability and off-road ability, Unimog is a legend established by lives saved and mountain roads built.

It’s also powered by a 4.8-litre in-line six turbodiesel, which just managed to be more powerful than Ranger, by a mere 3kW, with a peak output of 160kW. Torque reserves are enormous, tough, at 810Nm. But fast it most certainly is not, being effectively the weight of two and a half Ranger Raptors.

Here’s why Ford gave Ranger Raptor a 2,0-litre unit…

The new Ford Ranger Raptor employs a 2,0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel.

A Ford executive says that the twin-turbo 2,0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine in the new Ranger Raptor was the “right choice” since it combines “power and efficiency”.

Although Ford has yet to reveal performance (nor claimed efficiency) figures for the new Ranger Raptor, it confirmed at the beefed-up bakkie’s global unveiling that the uprated turbodiesel mill will be worth 157 kW and 500 N.m, besting the existing 3,2-litre five-cylinder turbodiesel unit by 10 kW and 30 N.m.

Roland Ernst, Ford’s chief engineer for small gas and diesel engines, told CarAdvice that the powerplant had been “optimised” for use in the off-roading pick-up, where it will be linked to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission.

“We’ve taken the standard 2,0-litre turbo that this engine started life as and refined the durability, upgraded the pistons and optimised the temperature range of the turbines for better performance with this engine,” Ernst said, according to the Australian publication.

“Once that was done, we’ve taken it through the toughest testing procedures we have in the Ford Corporation, including the peak pressures in the fuel system, the entire temperature range inside the engine, as well as all the environmental testing in deserts and in freezing conditions in cold climates – and it passed with flying colours.”

Ernst promised that the engine in the Ranger Raptor was “very responsive”.

“The main intent of the Raptor DNA is to have a very sharp throttle response, and we think with this product that we’ve achieved that through our engineering, and especially in combination with our 10-speed auto transmission,” he said.

“By combining the boost control with the smaller HP turbocharger sequentially with the larger LP turbo for the higher power, we think we’ve got a very responsive engine, a very powerful engine and a very tough engine.”

Earlier, Ford Performance’s chief engineer reacted to criticism of the Blue Oval’s choice of powerplant, telling South African media that “the Raptor is not about the engine“. He also suggested to Australian reporters that a petrol-powered Ranger Raptor was not on the cards.

Under the skin of the new Ford Ranger Raptor

Ford’s bundu-bashing Ranger Raptor one-tonner, revealed to the world on Wednesday, certainly looks the part, with its chunky grille, tall stance and black plastic wheel-arch flares over big mudplugger tyres; but does it have the moxie to live up to its own hype?

Firstly, that engine. Big bakkies - especially big bakkies that are expected to hold their own off-road - are all about big muscular engines with lots of low-down torque. Ford’s new two-litre turbodiesel four with sequential turbos is rated for 157kW and 500Nm - which seems more than adequate on paper - but it’s not the big-inch V8 or V6 that the Blue Oval fan club was hoping for.

It is, however, an elegant piece of engineering with a small, high-pressure turbo for instant response and a larger, low-pressure turbo to move the large volumes of intake air required at high revs. At lower engine speeds the two turbos work in series to increase torque and reduce turbo lag, while at high speeds the smaller blower is bypassed to let the bigger one suck in all the air it can.

The turbos are, of course, powered by exhaust gases, which means they get very hot in use; to prevent them from self-destructing the casing of the low-pressure turbo and the impeller bearings on both turbos even have their own water-cooling system.

With smaller engines come, inevitably, narrower power bands; Ford has addressed that concern with an all-new, in house, 10-speed auto transmission, offering a huge spread of ratios so that the engine will always be working at optimum revs, no matter whether you’re towing your jet-ski down to the coast or towing a tractor out of a donga.

Nevertheless, those revs will be high enough to make the diehard bakkie brigade uncomfortable; it’s worth remembering that long after the Amarok’s two-litre twin-turbodiesel four had proved that it really was as durable as Volkswagen said it was, the complaints that it was a little light in the pants continued, and the Amarok is now available with a three-litre V6 TDI.

But for now the Raptor is not, so we’ll have to make the most of what it does have, with a five-way Terrain Management System switch on the steering wheel that offers two road and four off-road modes so you can tune the power delivery to where you are and what you’re doing.

Normal mode programmes the powertrain for comfort, and fuel-efficiency, while Sport mode sharpens throttle response, holds onto gears longer and downshifts more aggressively.

Grass/Gravel/Snow mode is all about maintaining traction on treacherous surfaces with second-gear starts and smoother gear shifts

Mud/Sand mode keeps the transmission in lower gears with high torque for maximum traction on soft surfaces.

Rock mode, by contrast, uses the higher gears at lower engine revs for smooth controllability on low-speed rocky terrain where smooth controllability is key.

Baja mode - named for the famous desert race - combines Sport Mode with dialing back the traction control and stability programs to allow you drive hard on wide open spaces, without the electronic nanny fighting you all the way.

None of which will do you much good if the chunky all-terrain BF Goodrich 285/70 R17 tyres aren’t in firm contact with the ground - which is the responsibility of the Raptor’s specially designed ladder chassis and custom suspension.

The independent front suspension has strengthened protruding shock absorber towers with cast aluminium lower control arms, while the the solid rear axle has bespoke long-travel coilover dampers and a Watts linkage to limit lateral movement, rather than the usual leaf spring set-up, which is great for heavy loads but offers limited travel.

Long-travel dampers, specially made for this model by Fox Racing Shox, have 46.6mm pistons all round and internal bypass valves so that the damping gets progressively firmer towards the top and bottom of the travel. It’s called Position Sensitive Damping and ensures firm control at high speed on rough ground, with gentler damping around the mid-point of the travel for a more comfortable ride when cruising on tar.

Ground clearance is 283mm, with an approach angle of 32.5 degrees, ramp over angle of 24 degrees and departure angle of 24 degrees.

The special front brakes have dual-piston callipers with pistons 9.5mm bigger than the standard Ranger's, biting down on 332 x 32mm ventilated discs, while the 54mm rear brake callipers, acting on 332 x 24mm discs, have their own master cylinder and booster.

Don’t stand in front of a moving Ranger Raptor; in place of the usual pedestrian-friendly crumple zone, the Raptor’s front bumper is mounted directly onto the chassis, as are two recovery hooks rated at 4.5 tons each and a 2.3mm thick bash plate made from high-strength steel that protects the radiator, power steering, front accessory drive, sump and front differential.

The rear bumper is also solidly frame-mounted, and comes with an integrated tow bar and two recovery hooks rated at 3.8 tons each.

The Ranger Raptor will be produced by Ford Thailand Manufacturing, and in South Africa at Ford’s Rosslyn plant, for release on the local market during 2019.

Ranger Raptor ‘doesn’t make any apologies’ – Ford

Ford says its new Ranger Raptor is a fully fledged member of the Ford Performance family.

Ford says its new Ranger Raptor is a “fully fledged member of the Ford Performance family”, claiming that the new flagship version of the double-cab bakkie “doesn’t make any apologies”.

The new Ranger Raptor – which is expected to launch in South Africa (where it will also be built) in 2019 – employs a 2,0-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine worth 157 kW and 500 N.m, plus a 10-speed automatic transmission, Fox-supplied suspension and as many as six driving modes.

Speaking to GoAuto, Trevor Worthington, who holds the position of Ford vice-president of product development in the Asia-Pacific region, promised that the Ranger Raptor would be both capable and comfortable.

“The combination of the Ford Performance DNA, and the fundamental capability of what we’ve been able to put in the truck, at last means there’s a sports version that has credibility, but it’s not so uncomfortable to use in everyday use, not so compromised that no one would ever buy it,” Worthington told GoAuto.

“I think we only know how to do things one way, and that is to do it properly. And if you’re going to do a sports truck, it, to some extent, has no limit in terms of what it can achieve. What the [F-150] Raptor has done over the last number of years has set the benchmark for what these kind of trucks are, straight out of the factory. Our goal with this truck was to absolutely replicate exactly what the other Raptor has achieved.

“We are the little brother to the big Raptor, and so this thing doesn’t make any apologies. It meets all the Ford Performance DNA, sits next to GT350s and GTs and the big Raptor. It’s a fully fledged member of the Ford Performance family. And that means something,” Worthington said.

Damien Ross, chief programme engineer for the Ranger Raptor, described the new model as being “like a luxury car” with an impressive fuel range.

“It’s like a luxury car on the road, so you can do long journeys with your family. It’s got a great diesel with power and torque, but it’s a really good diesel in terms of mileage, so you’ll be able to get there, you’ll be able to go off road and not be looking at your fuel gauge for the day,” said Ross.

“You can really cover three or four times the distance when you’re going off road and at the other end you’ll feel refreshed. Even when we were on the road [in testing], everybody wanted to drive the vehicle back home. Nobody wanted any of the other vehicles.”

Ford Ranger Raptor: 5 Things You Need to Know

If you think the Ford Ranger Raptor is just a Ranger with one of those body kits (you know, the kind you often see rolling around in the East Rand area), you’re wrong... it’s so much more. We travelled to Bangkok in Thailand for the global reveal to get in-depth insight to the new model.

1. It’s not about the engine

To quote Jamal Hameedi of Ford performance: "If you think a Raptor is about performance figures, then you don’t know what a Raptor is." The Ranger Raptor’s 2.0-litre bi-turbodiesel unit recently received much criticism in the social media because of the motor's supposedly mediocre peak outputs (157 kW and 500 Nm of torque). However, the engine is said to be more refined and has a more accessible power band, but the Raptor is all about capability, off-road capability. It’s been built to withstand abuse, punishment and dirt-road hooliganism of the worst kind. I can’t tell you how many times the Ford engineers at the event used the words "airborne" and "landing" in the same sentence, but it was a lot. Look at the Raptor's ground clearance figure – 283 mm, that’s 16% more than the current Ranger. What's more, the newcomer has gnarly off-road tyres and special suspension setup. Think of it as an off-road toy, that’s how Ford presented it at the reveal: it launched the Raptor over mounds like a Dakar rally car!

2. It runs Fox shocks, like a mountain bike

Well sort of, Fox is known for making suspension systems for mountain bikes and they have done extensive work in vehicles before, namely in Baja racing and truck racing in the United States. It also featured on the 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro – a special performance Pick-Up built for the US market. The Raptor’s shocks were actually developed for racing and feature long travel and an internal bypass system that makes landing jumps less back-breaking, but doesn’t compromise on-road comfort by being cumbersome when cornering.

3. Technically it’s got 20 gears!

The Ranger Raptor still maintains its low range transfer case, so you get 10 gears in high range and 10 gears in low range. Ford engineered the 10-speed ‘box in the 'States for the F150 and notes that having so many gears improves efficiency and power accessibility. It has been thoroughly tested for the Ranger Raptor in the harshest conditions, having to survive millions of testing kilometres of abuse in the dunes, desert and rocks. We have no real experience with this transmission, so we will reserve judgement until we’ve driven it.

4. There’s a special Baja mode

Baja mode is named after the famous American off-road race. It’s an iconic race that covers 1 000 km through California and Mexico. The special mode turns the Ranger Raptor into a race weapon, it’s like a Sport mode for a performance car, but with all the systems set up to go off-road as wildly as possible. It will pare back the traction control, disengage ABS, hold onto the gears for longer and shift down quicker.

5. It will be built in SA, but not soon

Ford South Africa spent around R3-billion last year upgrading its plant in Silverton so it can produce Ranger Raptors for our local market. It won’t be ready for 2018, but you can expect international launch drives to occur later this year, before eventually going on sale in 2019. Pricing will be a hot topic of debate as many will see the Amarok V6 as a rival. Ford will need to punt the off-road credentials of the Raptor hard if the Blue Oval wants to turn buyers away from the Amarok. As an estimate and considering the amount of extra R&D that’s gone into the Raptor, I would suspect a price point of around R750k.

Raptor sparks SA demand for hot bakkies, says tuner

Local tuner Steve’s Auto Clinic says it has noticed a “significant increase” in interest in high-performance bakkies in South Africa since the unveiling of the new Ford Ranger Raptor.

“Following the global reveal of the Ranger Raptor, we have seen a significant increase in enquiries from pick-up owners who would like to apply a similar conversion to their existing Rangers or other pick-ups,” said Tiaan van Wyk, marketing manager at SAC.

The new Ranger Raptor – which boasts Fox Racing dampers and a 10-speed automatic transmission – is powered by a twin-turbo 2,0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine worth 157 kW and 500 N.m. Those peak outputs leave it trailing the likes of Volkswagen’s V6 version of the Amarok (165 kW) and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz X350d (190 kW).

Of course, the local tuner says it will happily fit a Unichip/Dastek Power system to your standard Ranger (even though Ford Performance says aftermarket specialists won’t be able to match the production Raptor), taking the 2,2 TDCi from 118 kW/385 N.m to 140 kW/450 N.m and the 3,2 TDCi from 147 kW/470 N.m to 170 kW/570 N.m.

“With each of our Elite units, the owner receives a remote control with five pre-programmed engine map settings. The owner can change the engine power and driving characteristics for in-city driving and improved fuel consumption, for towing, normal driving, and of course for more performance. There is even a safe mode that renders the engine powerless and is a powerful anti-theft solution,” said Van Wyk.

SAC also offers tuning packages for the Toyota Hilux, taking the 2,8 GD-6 engine to 170 kW and 575 N.m, and the 2,4 GD-6 to 140 kW and 500 N.m. Also popular, says SAC, is a package for the 2,0-litre BiTDI Amarok, which frees up 180 kW and 450 N.m.

Of course, as we’re always at pains to point out in cases like this, applying such a package to your under-warranty vehicle will see said manufacturer warranty voided…

Eight derivatives of the new engine will be assembled at Struandale when production officially commences in the fourth quarter of 2018. The new assembly line has a capacity of 120 000 engines per annum.

Billions invested in SA

Jacques Brent, President of Ford Middle East and Africa, said: "We are delighted to confirm that, as part of the R3-billion investment announced in November 2017, we are expanding both the capability and capacity of the Struandale Engine Plant for our current and future engine programmes.

"The investment includes the installation of a sophisticated new assembly line for an all-new diesel engine program that will, most notably, power the exciting new Ford Ranger Raptor when it is launched in 2019."

"At the same time, we are boosting capacity for the current Duratorq TDCi engine that is used in the Ford Ranger and Everest, with new derivatives and additional European markets being introduced for the local operations."

Duratorq TDCi expansion

The current component machining and assembly lines for the Duratorq TDCi diesel engine, which has been produced locally since 2011 for the Ford Ranger and Everest, are also being expanded.
Brent said: "Our upgrades for the Duratorq TDCi program adds incremental volumes, with 22 new four-cylinder engine derivatives to be exported to European markets, including for use in front-wheel drive Ford models.

"This introduces three significant new customers for the Struandale Engine Plant, comprising Italy, Turkey and Russia."

Struandale central to Ford global production

Ultimately, the Struandale engine plant will become the home of all Duratorq TDCi engine component machining for the Ranger, Everest and Transit, along with expanded engine assembly in conjunction with current operations at Ford factories in Thailand and Argentina.

Brent adds: "This places our South African business in a central role within the global Ford network, and reaffirms our commitment to developing the automotive industry within the local market, and in the broader Middle East and Africa region."

56 engine variants

With the additional 2.2-litre engine derivatives officially coming on line in the fourth quarter of 2018, the Struandale Engine Plant will be assembling a total of 56 variants of Ford’s award-winning Duratorq TDCi engine.

Installed capacity for the Duratorq TDCi program is set to increase from the current 254 000 machined component sets (cylinder head, block and crankshaft) to 280 000, while assembly capacity will grow from 115 000 to 130 000 engines per annum.

To accommodate the significant production expansion for the two engine programs, a new warehouse was built at Struandale. The new 5 418 m2 facility was designed to house all the required parts, components and tools on-site to maximise production efficiency for the two engine programs.

FORD SA TO BUILD NEW RANGER RAPTOR’S ENGINE IN PE!

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has announced an expansion of operations at its Struandale engine plant in Port Elizabeth, where it will start building an all-new diesel engine set to be used in the new Ranger Raptor.

The news comes after the late-2017 announcement of Ford’s increased investment in its two South African plants.

“We are delighted to confirm that, as part of the R3-billion investment announced in November 2017, we are expanding both the capability and capacity of the Struandale engine plant for our current and future engine programmes,” said Jacques Brent, President of Ford Middle East and Africa.

“The investment includes the installation of a sophisticated new assembly line for an all-new diesel engine programme that will, most notably, power the exciting new Ford Ranger Raptor when it is launched in 2019,” Brent added.

The Ranger Raptor will be powered by a twin-turbo 2,0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, producing 157 kW and 500 N.m. Scheduled to launch in South Africa in 2019, the new Ranger Raptor will be produced both in Thailand and at the Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, South Africa.

“At the same time, we are boosting capacity for the current Duratorq TDCi engine that is used in the Ford Ranger and Everest, with new derivatives and additional European markets being introduced for the local operations,” he said.

How Much Will The Ford Ranger Raptor Cost in SA?

The Ford Ranger Raptor will only go on sale in SA during 2019, but the model has already been priced for certain markets around the world. Using this pricing, we are able to estimate what the local price will be, come 2019.

Ford Australia has announced pricing for the Ranger Raptor this week, marking the first indication of what the terrain munching bakkie will cost. Australia will receive its allocation of Raptors before South Africa as it is set to go on sale during Q4 of 2018.

Pricing has been set at AUS$74 990, which equates to R701 000. A bit more analysis needs to go into the pricing structure to get a clearer picture of what our local Ranger Raptor could cost. The top-spec Ranger WildTrak, for instance, costs R560 000 in Australia compared to the R633 500 locally, a R73 500 premium. Apply that increase to the Ranger Raptor and locally we would be looking at R775 000. That's the same as a top-spec VW Amarok V6 and mid-spec Mercedes-Benz X-Class.

One thing that could help reduce the cost of the Raptor is that Ford plans to build the Raptor and its engine in South Africa. This may help offset some of the import costs that Australia pays as its Rangers are shipped in from Thailand.
