Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition confirmed for South Africa

The Blue Oval’s ultimate offroad vehicle has been given an eye-catching upgrade with the announcement of the Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition.

It will be built in limited numbers to ensure exclusivity with the addition of strategically placed decals, red accents, integrated sports hoop and a lockable roller shutter.

Launched in 2019, the Raptor has set the standard for offroad handling with a deft combination of its chassis, suspension, large tyres and Terrain Management System.

The cabin gets additional red stitching on the steering wheel, instrument panel and door cards as well as a Special Edition-only raceway grey instrument panel.

Under the bonnet everything stays the same with Ford’s 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel plant that gives you 500Nm of torque and 157kW coupled to their 10-speed automatic gearbox.

Pricing for the Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition will be announced closer to its local launch in Q4.

Ford Created A Rainbow 'Very Gay' Ranger Raptor In Response To An Online Troll

Every vehicle should come with a sweet rainbow option.

The internet is a magical place where you can drool about your dream cars and learn new skills. It’s also a soundboard for all sorts of opinions. One internet commenter called Ford Germany’s Ranger Raptor color ‘very gay’ and the company responded in the best way. The Very Gay Raptor is a Ranger Raptor sporting Pride colors and a sparkly gold wrap.

Ford’s European arm recently launched the Ranger Raptor Special Edition in a promo showing the pickup ripping right into an old-school western movie plot.

It’s an ad that made many internet commenters wish for the truck to be offered here in the States. But one commenter took issue with the truck’s Performance Blue color, calling it ‘very gay’ and telling Ford to paint the truck yellow and black.

Ford used this opportunity and Christopher Street Day in Cologne, Germany, to make a statement with a Ranger Raptor:

Christopher Street Day is an LGBTQIA+ event that takes place in Germany and across Europe. It’s a celebration for LGBTQIA+ people and a demonstration against discrimination. Like its American equivalent, companies like dressing up stuff in rainbow flags as a show of support. Ford has been supporting the event since 1998.

It didn’t stop with an animation on Twitter. A Ranger Raptor got wrapped in a black and gold dust sparkle film from a company called Alphafoil and finished off with a prominent Pride flag.

Sideways in the dirt - Going racing at the SACCS Nampo 400 in Ford's Ranger Raptor

• We set out to determine if a stock standard bakkie could handle the routes of the SA Cross Country Series.

• Armed with Ford's Ranger Raptor, we headed to Bothaville for the Nampo 400.

• For less than a quarter of the price of a FIA Class Ford Ranger, you can have just as much fun.

The flowing dirt roads

Where the Ranger shines is on flowing dirt roads, nothing that we have ever driven inspires you to go faster and faster - no matter the conditions - and nothing eats dirty miles like this bakkie.

In terms of driving dynamics, it has everything to flatter the novice and genuinely reward the expert. It is a true drivers bakkie, and that is precisely the kind of person who should buy this: the kind which might have previously shopped in the M, AMG or GTI department store but has grown tired of getting into trouble with Inspector Plod.

The Raptor is a vehicle for driving enthusiasts who are not afraid to get dirty. And the beauty of it all is that you can have a tremendous amount of fun and get very close to the limits of traction at under 100km/h. The Raptor has the ability of an off-road racing vehicle while still retaining all of the practicality of a leisure double-cab bakkie. What more could you want. South Africa has over 300 000km of dirt roads, and one can not ask for a better toy to explore them with than this Raptor.

The Raptor made the routes around Bothaville seem less hardcore than what they were and remains an extremely enjoyable vehicle to drive. Now, if Ford South Africa and the SA Cross Country Series could only get a one-make Raptor racing series going...

Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition pricing confirmed for South Africa

The Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition will be introduced to the South African market as somewhat of a farewell for this generation of the bakkie that has seen an impressively successful run. Pricing for this model which will be produced in limited numbers has now been revealed.

This look is further accentuated by red front tow hooks together with matte black flared wheel arches, front and rear bumpers, door handles and a signature Ford-embossed grille. The integrated black sports hoop derived from the Ranger Wildtrak has been included to the design as well to add further flair to the muscular appearance.

Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition (2021) Launch Review

With the all-new Ford Ranger expected to make its local debut towards the end of 2022, run-out editions of the current bakkie are coming thick and fast. The flagship Raptor is the latest derivative to be dolled up; we drove the Special Edition from Cape Town to the Tankwa on South Africa’s longest dirt road to find out what’s so “special” about the newcomer…

Summary

The Raptor Special Edition carries a R45k premium over the standard Raptor (R965 300 vs R920 300). Whether the sticker kit, roller shutter and red contrast stitching can justify the newcomer’s premium is up to you to decide. This Ford, however, remains the best bakkie on the market. Taking price out of the equation, the Raptor’s ride is as good as some premium SUVs, and its off-road ability is unmatched at this price point. It might lack a little in the performance stakes (considering that its asking price is close to R1 million), but the bakkie certainly makes up for it through its sheer breadth of skills (and, of course, immense ability).

Why engine output never matters - in a Ranger Raptor SE bakkie, and everything else you should know

• Some graphic enhancements for the ultimate Ranger.

• Beyond the slight change in exterior detailing, the core Raptor specification remains unchanged.

• This is a double-cab that can do things that its rivals simply can't.

Ford has changed the sticker kit on its Ranger Raptor and made its recovery points red.

If you have always desired a milder graphic design treatment for your Raptor, the Special Edition obliges. At R965 300. You also get a lockable loadbox roller-shutter for added security and dust-proofing when transporting things in the back.

Testing the value of a new sticker kit is problematic. I am not a graphic designer or vehicle detailing specialist. Luckily, Ford decided that one of the country's steepest mountain trails and its longest gravel road would serve best to reinforce the inherent capability of Raptor.

DRIVEN: Ford Ranger Raptor SE is in a league of its own

It’s perfectly weighted for the kind of speed that would send any other double cab into a panic with bumps in the road becoming an excuse to see how much airtime is possible.

That’s why the Raptor stands apart from the competition, even within its own stable. It’s the ultimate lifestyle bakkie that combines off-road prowess as well as comfortable cruising on tar and dirt no matter the distance.

So, Ford, how about a V6 option when the New Ranger hits the streets?

The Ford Ranger Raptor SE comes with a four-year/120 000km warranty, three-year/unlimited distance roadside assistance and five-year/unlimited km corrosion warranty.

A six-year/90 000km service plan is included which covers six services.

OPINION | Ford's Ranger Raptor: the harder you drive it, the more rewarding it feel
  • If you're looking for dream vehicle, they don't come more dreamy than the Ranger Raptor.
  • Sub-10 litres per 100km/m can be achieved if you respect its accelerator pedal.
  • Supreme off-road and surprisingly comfortable on road performance.
Overall summary

The header of this piece hinted at the Ranger Raptor being a sound motoring investment. We think it is one of the best vehicles you can buy in South Africa right now, and while R1 million almost is a heck of a lot of cash, this car is one to buy and keep.

Seriously. Ford will be launching an all-new Ranger later this month, and while we're really excited and what's on offer there, the current generation Ranger is at the peak of its game right now. From the Ranger FX4 to the Thunder and the Stormtrak and the ever-popular Ranger Wildtrak, Ford has honed and honed this bakkie to perfection over the past decade.

Our test Raptor already had 20 000km on it, and it took some hard knocks in the Kruger Park and on some off-road trails, and it refused to rattle and squeak on the inside. The fit and finish are excellent, and it makes us feel proud that South Africans built the bakkie in Pretoria. It's such a compelling vehicle because it does everything you expect of a passenger car, but with the might of a monster truck.

Ok, getting it in and out of the garage and into tight spots at the mall can be a challenge. And, if you're not careful, it can get thirsty in town when it comes to diesel use. But, there's no competition for this vehicle, and if you want to buy something now that will give you a genuinely confident feeling every time you fire it up, then it's hard not to think of the Ranger Raptor as a sound motoring investment.

Sure, most vehicles are depreciating assets, but if you're going to go big at least once in your life, you may as well go big with a car that's capable of anything: family car, adventure vehicle, dream bakkie.

The Ranger Raptor has some magic to it, and we wish we could add one to our family garage. The all-new Ford Ranger makes its global debut at the end of November 2021. It is being built at Ford's factory in Pretoria for local consumption and export destinations worldwide. All Ford Ranger Raptors sold in South Africa come with a four-year or 120 000km mechanical warranty.

DRIVEN: Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition 2,0L BiT 10AT 4×4

Whether or not you like the fact that Ford has launched numerous Ranger special editions, including this SE, there’s no doubt that the Raptor remains a deeply compelling off-road machine with class leading on-road manners. Now it has a lockable roller shutter so when you do engage Baja mode and head to the rocks and gravel in the middle of nowhere you won’t risk throwing your luggage all across the landscape. With that we cannot wait to experience what the next generation Ranger has to offer as this is one tough act to follow.
