Updated Ford Ranger line-up: check out SA pricing here!

The updated Ford Ranger line-up has been launched in South Africa, with the locally assembled bakkie range comprising 33 derivatives at launch (two fewer than the outgoing line-up, with the flagship Ranger Raptor still to come).

Pricing starts at R287 100 for the base, rear-wheel-drive, single-cab model. As before, the single-cab and super-cab ranges will use the Blue Oval brand’s 2,2-litre four-cylinder engine, although the firm has now also added the option of the 3,2-litre five-cylinder TDCi unit for these body styles.

Where things get really interesting, however, is in the overhauled double-cab line-up, where Ford has introduced its new 2,0-litre turbodiesel and bi-turbo 2,0-litre diesel units (built at Struandale engine plant in Port Elizabeth).

The new single-turbo 2,0-litre oil-burner churns out 132 kW and 420 N.m, and is offered in XLT specification with the choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The former is priced at R514 300, while upgrading to the 4x4 model will cost you R570 200. Both versions employ the automaker's new ten-speed automatic transmission.

The bi-turbo engine, meanwhile, will be offered in Wildtrak form, again in 4x2 and 4x4 guise. Here, the four-cylinder unit develops the same 157 kW and 500 N.m as it does in the upcoming Ranger Raptor, with a ten-speed automatic also standard. The rear-wheel-drive version will set you back R632 300, while the 4x4 derivative is priced at R678 200. The 3,2-litre engine is still available in the Wildtrak, although only in 4x2 automatic guise (for R609 800).

So, what other updates have been made to the Ranger? Well, besides the styling tweaks (led by that fresh grille design), Ford earlier promised the new line-up would feature “a clearer distinction between models visually, with bumper treatments and colours reflecting the unique character of each model”.

Refreshed Ford Ranger Wildtrak: updated specs revealed

As we point out in that original pricing story, South Africa’s revised Ranger line-up features three Wildtrak double-cab bakkie variants. One retains the Blue Oval brand’s 3,2-litre five-cylinder turbodiesel (in 4x2 auto guise, and offering 147 kW and 470 N.m), while the other two employ the firm’s new bi-turbo 2,0-litre diesel unit (in 4x2 or 4x4 configuration). The four-cylinder mill develops the same 157 kW and 500 N.m as it does in the Ranger Raptor, and is linked to a ten-speed automatic transmission as standard.

So, what sort of kit does the Wildtrak trim level now include? Well, the most significant updates are found in the safety column, which now includes items such as autonomous emergency braking and active park assist, in addition to adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, forward collision warning, a lane-keeping system, auto high-beam control, parking sensors (front and rear), a reversing camera, roll-over mitigation, trailer sway control, hill-descent control, tyre-pressure monitoring, a driver alert system and seven airbags.

Other interesting standard features include lift assistance for the tailgate, a drop-in bedliner (with a 12 V power socket), hydraulic struts for the bonnet, automatic headlamps, LED front foglamps, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry (and push-button start), roof rails, a six-speaker sound system (again controlled through an eight-inch screen running Sync 3), an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, a 230 V/150 W power converter and 18-inch alloy wheels.

For the record, the Ranger 3,2 TDCi 3,2 Wildtrak 6AT 4x2 will cost you R609 800, while the Ranger 2,0L BiT Wildtrak 10AT 4x2 is priced at R632 300 and the 4x4 at R678 200. Pricing for the Ranger Raptor has yet to be confirmed.

Ford Ranger (2019) Specs and Price Announced

Pricing and specifications for the facelifted Ford Ranger have surfaced on the Blue Oval's local website. Here's how much the facelifted bakkie will cost you.

The facelifted Ford Ranger launches in South Africa in the second week of April 2019 and we will be in attendance. Ahead of its official launch, we have stumbled across the pricing for all 3 body styles. The Ford Ranger will be offered in single cab, super cab and double-cab.

The look of the Ranger has been enhanced with a revised bumper and a new grille which features a horizontal bar that now splits the grille into 2 sections. High-spec derivatives will have bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights and new exterior colours include Diffused Silver and Blue Lightning.

The updated Ranger will be offered with a new single and bi-turbo diesel engine mated to a new 10-speed automatic transmission. The current engine lineup (2.2 and 3.2-litre turbodiesel) remains for now and is complemented with the addition of a new 2.0-litre EcoBlue turbodiesel engine. This unit turns out 125 kW which will be mated with a new 10-speed automatic transmission. A 6-speed manual transmission will also be offered. In terms of efficiency, Ford says that the new engine and transmission combination results in up to 9% improvement in fuel efficiency.

2019 Ford Ranger hits SA with new look, engines and tech

Ford’s revitalized Ranger doesn’t look too different on the surface, but the popular bakkie line-up has been given a thorough makeover that sees the introduction of brand new engines, a 10-speed gearbox, new driver assist technologies as well as significant chassis refinements that are said to have improved the vehicle’s ride quality.

So how do you tell the 2019 model apart on the outside?

All Rangers get new front bumper designs as well as a redesigned grille where the central bar is now split and it’s easier to distinguish the new XL, XLS and XLT models as the grilles have a more horizontal design that no longer stretches into the lower bumper.

The Wildtrak retains a more familiar appearance with its vertically extending grille in a dark titanium-effect finish, which is also applied to the mirrors and door handles, and in addition the Wildtrak is now fitted with HID headlights and LED daytime running lights.

New 2-litre diesel engines

The facelifted Ranger sees the debut of a brand new, and locally-assembled, 2-litre turbodiesel engine range offered in single- and twin-turbo guises, and mated exclusively to a new 10-speed automatic gearbox.

The latter, which produces 157kW and 500Nm, will power the soon-to-be-launched Raptor, but it is also being offered in the Wildtrak.

The single-turbo version is offered in XLT guise and this one is pitched directly against the Hilux 2.8, pushing 132kW and 420Nm.

Both new engines are said to offer improved efficiency and lower noise and vibration levels compared to the older 2.2-litre and 3.2-litre turbodiesel engines, which continue to be offered, the former positioned at the lower end of the range and the latter slotting between the single- and twin-turbo 2-litre engines.

As before, the 3.2, five-cylinder engine produces 147kW and 470Nm, while the 2.2 is good for 88kW and 285Nm in base models and 118kW/385Nm from the XL grade upwards.

Depending on the variant, the 3.2 and 2.2 engines continue to be available with a choice of six-speed automatic and manual gearboxes (5-speed in the case of base models), and the range - including new 2-litre variants - offers a good spread of 4x2 and 4x4 options that should fit most needs.

The Ranger offers a braked towing capacity of up to 3500kg, ground clearance of 230mm and a load capacity of up to 1199kg on some SuperCab variants.

New driver assist gadgets

The range-topping Wildtrak gains Ford’s semi-automatic Parallel Park Assist system, while that and the XLT are now fitted with a keyless entry and start system that includes a start button, and an ‘EZ lift’ tailgate that uses a torsion rod to reduce the effort required to close the tailgate by 70 percent.

DRIVEN: Ford Ranger Double Cab 2,0 SiT XLT 10AT 4x4

So, business as usual?

Precisely. Incrementally improved where needed, the facelifted Ranger should expand its reach into the segment thanks to the addition of that refined new 2,0-litre powertrain and rationalising of some models to appeal to more buyers. But don’t worry if the smaller engine has you raising a brow. It seems there’s no replacement for displacement as the 3,2 TDCi soldiers on…

Ford Ranger (2019) Launch Review

Summary

If you are in the market for a new bakkie, particularly a double cab, should the updated Ranger be near the top of your list? Most definitely. If you're looking to replace your current Ranger, the newcomer's well worth a look. Don't be put off by 1 fewer cylinder and a smaller displacement in the Wildtrak, it offers commendable performance, plus it's quieter and more rounded than the outgoing model. We think the pick of the bunch is the XLT, which offers a fair balance of spec, performance and value for money. Given the array of improvements in this new Ranger, we expect that Ford South Africa will continue selling these bakkies in vast numbers. The improvements make the 2019 Ford Ranger one of the most complete bakkies on sale in South Africa. Not only have some of the previous issues been addressed, but the overall package is comprehensive, safe and capable.

Just noticed that they have deleted the chrome edging on the XLT side steps / running boards. That's a nasty one. I love the chrome on mine...

Oh, and I see the radio antenna is now shorter, stubbier and moved to the rear of the cab roof. I wonder why they moved it?

The design change is a good thing though as for all of our double cabs, the long thin antenna got caught on garage door openings and would snap back and wack the roof. So our fix was to buy the old shape Mazda 3 stubby B Sting antenna from Parts and screw that on instead. My parts guy said those Mazda 3 antenna's were very fast movers because of Ranger owners :)

My pops drove a 10 speed 2.0 BiTurbo last week. Said he wasn't impressed. When he buys again, he'll go for the 3.2 once again. My takeaway: not worth paying a premium for the BiTurbo over the 3.2

Out of curiosity, why was he unimpressed specifically?

Out of curiosity, why was he unimpressed specifically?
He has a pedal booster on his current 3.2 auto and says his current one gets off the line and accelerates quicker, he felt, than the BiTurbo 10 speed. I must say that the pedal booster did amazing things to his auto and I can only just edge him and I am 4x2 manual whereas he is 4x4 auto.

Guy is willing to swap for a donkey cart lol
