The Generations Soapie / SABC stand off

Actors of the popular SABC1 soapie Generations embarked on a stayaway this week, the Saturday Star reported.

The cast claimed that the broadcaster as well as the production company, MMSV, had failed to deliver on promises it made to them during their strike last year.

"We came back to work after the first strike in good faith on the understanding that all the issues... would be addressed by the SABC by March 2014," the cast was quoted as saying.

"Since then, they have missed their own deadline... with no discernible resolution to our grievances in sight. Instead we've been ordered back to work and threatened with dismissal."

The cast was reportedly promised three year contracts which they had not received.

They also felt cheated out of royalties which was money earned from rebroadcasts as well as when the soapie aired in other countries.

The actors also wanted salary adjustments.

The Saturday Star claimed it could not reach the SABC for comment.

Lol 7 million daily viewers. Are they all going to die in a plane crash or all have collective amnesia or a coma.
 
I think these guys must have noticed how the Big Bang Theory stars held out for a $Million each, and thought they could do the same thing! :D
 
Yeah but how do you get the characters in the same place & time without them acting towards the event?!

Typical knee jerk reaction from people in power in SA, even if it's just a soapie.

I agree. The cost of these local shows is what pushes the cost of DStv up and puts SABC in bigger financial woes. It is a lot of money for a very small audience and it is not marketable worldwide to bring costs to the SA market down. In essence it is tough out there and then they go onto a strike as if we rely on them to provide entertainment. The arrogance knows no bounds. Tomorrow they will cry about them not having a job and the entertainment industry is so tough blah blah blah. They earn enough as it is. They will never earn what Hollywood actors get and if that is what they were truly after then I say good riddance.

I suspect it had slightly more to do with job security than straight out money issues.

I can understand that, but there are not a huge amount of entertainment options or there like say engineering. That means they are kinda left with an axe over their head to do their job and do it well since there is a queue waiting to do their places. But line the tradition in SA has become, lets strike and demand. Their services are non-essential and therefore a stupid move.

Having said that, perhaps they can jointly start something that could be appealing to the international market - this might be the push they needed
 
Find it interesting that it is this easy to fire them actors. Try this in any other sector and it goes pear shape for the business.
