To be fair to them, their show is the biggest money spinning television production in Africa, and it is broadcast in multiple countries worldwide. So they should get paid.

This is a lot better then it used to be... I know the actress that played Leigh Heins on Isidingo died with very little money. She drove a sponsored car and had no medical aid.

40k a month should get you that.

It's not like they are working like the miners for example... they can do tv adverts etc.. so now they complain they want royalties etc. They are just being greedy...
There are many other people out there that can take over their jobs (aka learn a few lines)... so asking for insane amount of money is stupid.

The article writer and the interviewee are unaware of labour laws. Soapies by nature are indifinite, and it can be established that an actor of a soapie in a permanent role is not freelancing but rather is a permanent employee of the studio company. How long has Ridhe from The Bold or Days of or lives been acting for? It cant be argued that he's freelancing. Remember that once an expectation is created that your contract will be renewed then you can't be easily dismissed and treated like a contract employee.

Is not about whether R40k is a lot of money or not, it's about whether they should be getting R40k a month considering the ad revenue they bring to the SABC, and its in that context that I contend that R40k is very little. Generations is a money spinner so SABC is making a huge profit on it. The problem for SABC is that Generations' revenue is used to pay for other non-performing programmes in their line-ups so they refuse to give up the profits. That is unfair to these actors. Another issue they are striking about is that SABC is getting revenue from international flighting of Generations, yet the actors are not being paid anything from that portion of revenue but only paid from the local revenue. Mnet had actors refusing to sign contract when the Wild started because of the same issue. Another issue is that SABC is rebroadcasting old episodes and making revenue from them, yet the actors are not paid a cent. There's no way you can agree to that as an employee, and there's no reason for these actors to agree to it either.

Another thing people are not aware of is that Generations actors are not allowed to take on competing roles, which is why the Fergusons left. So your revenue stream is very limited and you depend solely on Generations for a living.

Since when is the money a company makes on a product etc tied to a random persons job?

That is bollocks logic in the extreme in my opinion. You are paid what the company feels you are worth, if you don't like it then find a place that will pay more.

Companies sell software to multiple clients... we (devs) don't get money from each sale. Same for them... They did the service (acting) and got paid... why should they get money for each "sale" now? It's the companies (SABC) property.

In lots of business one department "carries" the other departments. That is just how it works, together they can make a profit (because they need each other)

These people think they are Hollywood stars... surprise they are not.

Generations is not selling a product, it's selling a story which is told by actors. Without actors there is no story told, and there is no Generations. So bad example you used.

Royalties. That is how artists get paid, they get paid based on the success of their production, amongst other things. They are not selling software! Even if they were selling software, they will still get maintenance fees.
