The Getz Thread

so far my ownership of my Getz, can easily see why these cars are literally EVERYWHERE,

sitting at 189K so far, replaced Clutch as mine was on its original clutch when I got it, and the release bearing was toasted, but car still drove, just squeaked like a rusty hinge everytime you push the Clutch in, change Clutch kit, runs very well now.

fixed aircon, Dropped the pump, had that fixed up, fixed the tensioner pulley, and replaced ALL belts, but was 100% possible to drive with NO aircon, car has all separate belts so its completely possible to drive with no aircon. no squeaking rattling, no noises no nothing, just cold air when you press the button, and despite not changing the entire system, condenser, evap core and all that, works well

Cambelt service done,

do have to report the issues with the oil filter, that got solved with a ORIGINAL Hyundai Oil filter, initially fitted a (White)GUD one, but this slowly leaked oil, replaced with a genuine Hyundai (blue) one, not a drop since,

Front Brakes done, more as a precaution, but strange this had BOTH Drums and Disks on the rear axle.

done some mild gravel road driving with this car, from Lanisberg to Zoar in the western cape, was afraid of a puncture, seeing all the Fortuners and Rangers driving on that dirt road, but not a issue, coped very well, with some mild off roading
although not crazy enough to take it onto the soft sand of the beach.

so far issues, Original CD player eject mechanism is broken, swallowed my Disc and wont give it back, not that it plays anyway,
using one of those cigarette lighter MP3 jobbies and streaming radio on that, as the reception is terrible,

apparently its common to see many Getz with fallen off roof aerials, and the base of the Antenna rusted off, mine is particularly bad, but its contained (as far as I can Tell)

managed to find replacement cluster globes for the Speedo and tach, but Odometer still out, so it works, just cant read at night,
still no globes for the HVAC controls,

new thing is the seatbelt light seems broken, will sometimes flash when the seatbelt is fastened, or not register when its plugged in, no big deal, luckily we dont get the Bongs of American cars here.

otherwise, for what I paid and what I asked from this car, extreamly happy with it, can see why even today you see these cars on the roads, still racking up KM's still loyally giving service, almost like a corolla or a Civic or a Swift or even a Jazz,

when you design a car properly, it will work, and when it goes wrong, its easy to fix.
nobody needs stupid nonsense on a car, thats made to do a job, if you want to drive something flashier, yes you can, just be prepared to sit in the Garage waiting on some plastic fantastic part that broke and cost a fortune to fix.

then you need a car like this, will work when the BMW is broken (again)

The Getz was my dream car, back in 2010 when my old inherited hatchback was stolen (welcome to Johannesburg!) and I had to buy a Hyundai Atos as the only car I could afford (back when you could still buy that much car for only R50 000). I liked the Atos but the Getz was very definitely in the next league, and it made me jelly.

sat in an Atos, I barely fit, had a friend of mine that got an Atos as a company car, (worked for a shipping company)
told me that thing looks as ridiculous from the inside as the outside, like a shoebox on whees, after an hour your foot will cramp, almost no space for your feet, tiny and cramped,

the getz is like a Luxury car in comparison, space for your feet, seats adjust properly, decent sized glovebox,
reading the comments on the redriven video, had the same boot hatch problem, was a easy fix, AC compressor issues,
and clutch and engine mount problems, but all of that is a simple and cheap fix.

always surprises me, is why cant they make cars like this again? its completly possible to make a new car last 250K
and have plenty on the used car market, but all they seem to do nowadays is build garbage, that will fall apart on the 3rd or 4th owner.

There should be a wire & connector under the driver's seat that plugs into the seat belt clip mechanism - check if it is plugged in securely - also try disconnecting it - spraying contact cleaner onto both the plug & socket terminals - then re-connecting it back up again & hopefully that sorts out your intermittent seat belt warning light issue for you.

tried that a few times, found the connector, apparently its inside the seatbelt buckle that a micro switch has gone,
and now just flashes and goes out, must be a backup of sorts that it wont flash if it isnt detected.

strangely enough the OG picanto has the same exact issue, since these cars share so much, seems to be a common fault
maybe when I go past a wrecker, will try see if I can get a replacement buckle,

already replaced a grab handle, as mine was broken, will try 3D print sunvisor clips, as again just like the Picanto they break off as well.

only issue I want some advice on is the rust, apparently many of them have this issue, where they rust in the same place,
not sure what mine is treated with, but if you run your finger along it, its quite hard so its some sort of glue?

one Idea I had was to put a wrap or sticker on it, another was to put bondo, not sure about that,
how much would it cost to properly repair this? one estimate I got was 15K from a body shop, not sure if that is worth it?

only other imperfection is a bit of a dent on the left side indicator from a bad parking job, sure it can be pulled out,
but the rust is the 1st priority

Thankfully, my car has a T-shaped antenna for the car radio that is adhered to the inside of the windscreen, just behind the rear-view mirror, so there's no issue with either rust or water intrusion issues with an antenna mounting hole drilled into the roof panel...

interesting idea, some people have also mentioned replacing it and putting a BMW style Sharkfin
considering how much I dislike BMW, I dont think that will work, but need to get some options on the table.

I have heard before that all Getz are carb. Is this true?
