It is with great interest that I read about Google's new Chrome browser and their new phone. At first I wondered now why on earth would a search company want to get into phones and then I realized that they probably correctly guessed where the future of the internet is moving to and they wish to capture and ever increasing portion of that market.

I am just wondering what this could mean for competition in the global marketplace if a company like this starts leveraging their technologies to make it a lot more difficult or even impossible for others to compete. I definitely think there is a serious threat evolving and internet users should actively start using and even developing alternatives in a collaborative fashion to counter this risk.

Google is a company that wants to make money

How is google doing anything that makes it difficult for other companies to compete?

As far as I can see the only thing google has done so far is be significantly better than their opposition.

Big companies like to flex their muscles and expand, whats new?

At least google makes good products which are generally better than the rest.

maybe the OP is hinting that Google might be the antichrist  ......... *goes to check permutations of Google working out to 666 in numbers* :p:D

Oh ffs. I'm getting sick of the "google is evil" BS!
They're a company. They are in it for the money people. If they can get rich by providing us with excellent products and services that cost the consumer sweet FA then why should we begrudge them their profits?
Making it more difficult to compete???
There biggest projects at the moment are open source ffs!!!
They're giving anyone innovative enough to compete the keys to the frikken kingdom.

I bet you that soon there will be fanatics that will be categorizing Google as being as 'evil' as Microsoft ;)

I reckon the browser is aimed squarely at MS.

MS is talking about web-based OS...and google is making solid progress with its Google Docs, GMail, Gears etc. Its only a matter of time before the collide.

With the phone, I think they are trying to expand mobile surfing so that more eyeballs see their ads when searching.

I'm pretty sure I've heard it before.

Anyone who would say that obviously has no understanding of the issues and is just another malcontent looking for a band wagon.
From a consumers point of view the MS and Google are polar opposites.
Google - innovative products for nothing.
MS - Shoddy, rip-offs at exorbitant prices.

i personally hate browsing the web with my phone, it's a load of ****. so the fact that google want to make phones - awesome, i'd probably buy one simply because i trust Google products. Google is a name that is synonamous (sp) with the internet; naturally they would want to increase their global standing.

"I am just wondering what this could mean for competition in the global marketplace if a company like this starts leveraging their technologies to make it a lot more difficult or even impossible for others to compete. " <-- Microsoft has been doing this since the 80's, the only difference is that their a load of ****, while Google rock :D

they also developing an open source mobile phone OS called Android which will hopefully create some kind of standardisation...

Well apparently a large group of Google workers have broken away to develop another enigne - Cool- i haven't checked it out, but it's apparently much better.

last i checked Google was not a charity, problem is your head is so far up their ass you will never see them as the same as Microsoft, when in fact they are identical.

no better and no worse then Microsoft.

you just fell for their brand hook line and sinker.

Agreed. Too many Google fanboys around nowadays!

Google should change their slogan from "Do no evil" to "Do less evil". Maybe in 5 years time they'll change it to "Do evil".

'cept for the fact that it's not.

Well they claim it's filtering sytmem is more accurate and cuts down on superfluos results.

teddy bears? O.o ...

ooookay .. neway ...

Cool .. sucks. Its damn slow - apparently it's filtering system is good, but it's so good that it takes ages to filter and nothing happens :/

as the same as Microsoft, when in fact they are identical.

i've never had a problem with any google products, have you stopped using their beta editions cos those, yes, are like Microsoft products.

No, Microsoft and Google are not identical. 90% of Google products that are made (some sold) are cheaper and more reliable. Perhaps it's your pc? Perhaps not, doesn't matter. All boils down to user experiance.

Your experiance with them was the same as Microsoft but me? No problems :)
