Hi guys,

Anyone diy'd replacing a section of ceiling?
Bathroom again after my geyser burst. Not too keen to call someone in if I can potentially do it.

Bonus question; drill bit for cutting through lintel? Need to put a curtain in.

ceiling is easy but messy. if you claimed from insurance though for the geyser they should cover it?

for a lintel a regular decent masonary bit, you not going crazy deep anyway for a curtain rod/rail

I'm fighting with insurance at the moment about exactly this. Complex living but I don't want a hole into the abyss every time I'm in the loo :|

Bro, it's cold lol. I've tried this. I'll fix and claim back when they relent.
I'm on leave this week so happy for a day or two's work to sort this out

lol if you did it properly it would be near as good as a normal ceiling :p

but yeah its easy, i would just suggest watching some youtube vids, you will need a helper to hold if it isn't small. the cornice is probably the hardest part

Do I need to replace the cornice?
Was hoping I could cut out the ceiling where they join and use some polyfilla before painting

you will likely need to replace any cornice touching the parts you replace, you could get away with it but depends how they fixed it, likely siliconed it with paintable silicone, so imo its coming off xD

it all depends what you are replacing, just a section, are you trying a patch job etc? give us a pic

Easiest diy would be to put in pvc ceilings, just attached to the existing ceiling. Only thing is you'd need to redo all the cornices then though.

Yep. And they’re full of **** about it too and require you to get written permission from your neighbours if it’s within 1.5m of a boundary wall.
Yeah... I felt the wrath of CoCT when I did renovations and found out that the awning (that was here when I bought the place) wasn't on the plans.

Wouldn't bother with the keter stuff though.. pretty terrible quality for the absurd prices that they asking..
Yeah I feel the same, was just illustrating a point. They are crazy expensive for junk

Yep. The Keter plastic doesnt stand up to the harsh African sun - some panels warp over time. And the metal screws screw into the plastic frame - and this tears out with use.

All in all I wasn't super impressed

What's the going rate for a medium-sized kitchen these days? I know how long is a piece of sting question.
Say not granite tops, new cupboards, new stove and oven (not high end).

Three years ago, my kitchen remodel cost somewhere close to 30k.. Formica tops, new cupboards in black cherry, new tiles floor and wall (to the bottom of the wall cupboards, didn't do anything fancy for the backsplash except for the section where the cooktop was.. new sink, used existing tap.. defy branded oven and hob..

Cupboards I did myself, wood and accessories came to 7k.. this will vary significantly depending on how you design your cupboards and if you want profiled doors or not.. I kept it basic with no fancy doors.. there was the large corner pantry and two corner cupboards which I bought flat pack, that came to 3.5k..

Tiles I bought myself, and had them installed by someone else.. this came to around 8k..

Oven and hob was was 5.5k.. extractor was 2k I think..
