Was actually looking for the same this afternoon. Leroy merlin sells 10m manual augers for like R300

Just a random rant since I'm redoing my family bathroom and spare room at the moment (figured I'd attack both rooms at once because I'm a sucker for punishment and also my bank balance clearly wasn't broken enough).

Also never ever let your missus try help if she is vaguely impatient, I'm about to probably implode from having to explain that certain things need to happen before other things can happen. :p

For reference, I've got the room to roughly this position :
Took out an internal wall, chipped out the existing floor (was from when the house used to have wooden parquet, so the bathrooms had a raised concrete floor to match levels), and bricked up an existing door.
All the chasing for the new plumbing is in place, and the bath is supported on 3 of the 4 sides (need to build a frame to hold the outside portion that can also be tiled).
Now to try and explain to my missus that the crappest part of the job is pretty much done now and things will probably speed up from here.

 Never going to be fast enough.
I blame those American programs where they build a house in a week with about a gazzilion people and an unlimited budget. (And I do have doubts about the timeframe they tell you.)

So from What I know the time frame of those shows is mostly accurate but they do a ton of prep work up front so all they need to do is build the structure.

Yep, everything they need is stacked in the backyard ready to be installed.

Add to that the tradies are knowledgable with limited rework, scams and abscondments.

Similarly:
Was reflecting on my experience and that of others, construction is the one area where most people are likely to get scammed. You spend the most on your house. Customers are out for the best deal due to the high cost, and are therefore most vulnerable. The anatomy of a scam remains targeting people who are trying to get something for nothing (or little).

Jy het my simpatie.

Does anyone know what kind of float valve this is? I assume it's ancient. It's for an older loo in the house, never really touched it since we moved in 5 yeas ago. Hasn't given us an issue but it has recently started overfilling.
Our house is already sold, so first prize is to fix it, otherwise I'll replace the float. But being this old, dunno if I will get parts, I haven't seen this type of float before.

If your house is sold, let the CoC plumber take care of it, assuming you have yet to arrange for that to be done..

I don't think a plumbing CoC is a thing in Johannesburg. We haven't been asked for one, only gas and electricity.

Oversight perhaps on the part of the attorneys..? It seems strange that you are asked for CoC for everything else except plumbing..

Nope, have sold and bought a couple of houses over the last 20 years, never been provided with one or asked for one.

Plumbing CoC isn't a requirement, only electrical and gas. I also find it strange...

Screen that brass cap off. The lever then comes off. There is a small washer behind that. It probably cost 20 cents...
