The Home Improvements Thread (2)

Morning Everyone,

I want to renovate my bathroom and I have been looking at plumbing costs. What would be estimated plumbing labour costs to replace toilet, basin, bath tub and shower. Nothing has to be moved and it's replacing two taps with a mixer for all the taps. I live in the Randburg area.

Thanks in advance.
I could send you a number and he could quote you if you wish. It was the guy who did our bathroom, for putting in the toilet and basin it was R1600 or so, we changed the single taps to a mixer and it wasn't too pricey if I remember correctly.

On the topic of burglar bars, which I will need to get installed when I move, what are people using these days for aluminium windows..?

I am currently looking at full frame bars, which install into the wall but, they are looking to be quite pricey.. rough estimate thus far is 35k..

The burglar bars you can buy from builders (as an example) and attach to the window frame to cover the opening window, I dont see how one can attach them to am aluminium frame and more so, do it securely..

Looking at options, obviously want the best value for money vs security at the end of the day..

Thanks, That's a good point to keep in mind.
Trying to identify where the leaks are is a Sherlock Holmes task. There's no apparent cracks on the roof.
I had a contractor that came to check it, and he could not pin point the leaks as well. He eventually said he knew where it was coming from, but that was him trying to get the job...
I had a similar problem some years ago.
To cut a long story short, the water entered under a ridge where the roof made a valley. Basically the angle of the one side was steeper than the other side and the water rushed into the valley and spilled over the plate under the tile. The plate itself was not wide enough and had no ridges to prevent the water spilling over.
The third roofing guy I had in spotted this, the rest just wanted to replace part of the roof.

Thanks, I got the number I'll contact them.

replacing the shower taps for a mixer will mean wall channeling and some retiling at very least. the bath mix should generally be ok, as will the basin.

i would say probably like R3500.

that bath can be a nightmare if it was tiled after and the plumber might not be able to replace it without damaging tiling.

Thanks, I already have someone to do the retiling etc because I am planning to replace the tiles anyway.

Brilliant. Very pleased. The guys didn't just do a very neat job but also using initiative. 3.5 days done
Old tiles out new tiles in.
Pics of before and after :-)

That is great news... and one I will keep in mind for when I get around to redoing my master bedroom and ensuite.

Pics of before and after :)

Here's some pics. Yes I am going to revamp kitchen as well. The area at the back in this first pick is a braai room. That floor I'm going to upgrade with a pigmented screed over the existing tiles.

Yes and those hideous ceiling fans must go!! :)

Anyone here with a roboguard system that is intergrated into their home alarm system

Nice :) and that was done by CTM?
Though for the ceiling fan does anyone know where to get the glass? Cause I put one up but the glass was broken :(

Some of my outside electrical conduit is attached to the wall with a little plug, and what seems like a cable tie - does anyone know what these are called, and where to get them?

do you have a pic?

do you have a pic?

Looks a bit like this - can't actually see if the "in-wall" side is plastic, or metal.

Disclaimer: when it comes to anything electric I know just enough to be a danger to myself and those in the surrounding area, so in the spirit of "there are no stupid questions", I need some advice on the following:

A family member has only been using induction plates for cooking for some time now but has saved up enough for a new oven (not purchased yet). Their kitchen has an isolator switch but bizarrely, there is nowhere to connect the stove's wiring too? I have no idea if this was an oversight, incompetence or simply not a requirement to obtain a CoC at the time (yes, they are in possession of a CoC issued in 2019).

I reckon there may be two options that would not involve chasing and re-tiling. Let me know if I've missed the boat completely on this one though:
  1. Buy a plug-in oven (I don't even know if that is the correct term?). I've read that as long as the draw is less than 16 Amps this is a viable option (I read this on an American forum though). Apparently, Bosch sells some energy-efficient units that can be plugged into a regular socket. Struggling to find which models in particular online but I have not spent a huge amount of time searching.
    1. If this is an option, should that wall socket be on its own circuit?
  2. The other option is to install something like this and run the wiring directly from the isolator itself to the oven:772252

I have no clue how feasible (or compliant) the second option is. I also urge you to read my disclaimer at the top again before being tempted to tell me how little I know - I'm painfully aware but hoping to learn.
