uPVC is expensive, but I would hate to ever go back to aluminium if I moved. We still have some steal windows, but slowly replacing them as we can afford to.

Hear too many horror stories of break ins because of aluminium windows and sliding doors. The sliding door in our bedroom is next, but it's going to be about R20k.
House I just moved into came with recently installed ALU windows.. No way I am replacing them now.. no burglar bars at all though, so I am busy getting quotes for full frame bars to cover the entire opening.. Only way to add some sort of protection for ALU windows..

Yeah it is really pricey, but alu isn't cheap either and I've got about 8 windows to replace and two old steel twin doors, replaced the single door with a wooden one and that was already 6k or so, most of it labour.

Yeah, and those spanish bars can be expensive too. For the uPVC we just put the clear plastic burglar bars on the opening sections. They are alarmed though, so if you break the plastic burglar bars our alarm will go off - for what it's worth.

...and getting it hung correctly is as important, so I prefer getting companies who supply and install - gives me one place to shout at when the inevitably screw it up.

30k for 10 windows, 3 of which are huge and two security gates.. first quote..

Any of the CPT okes can recommend someone who can make a new motor gate for my property..?

I've used Leon from Makarios Fencing a couple of times, for my in laws place and ours. The powder coating guys did a rubbish job on some of the palisade poles and it showed up 6 months later. Leon came and removed all the faulty coated poles, had it fixed and brought it back without a single complaint from his side.

A business and guy I'll continue to use, refer and support - and hopefully not end up with egg on my face at some stage. Not sure what his pricing is like in comparison to others though.

Thanks.. will get him to quote..

Steel or aluminium are not good for insulating heat or cold. UPVC steel reinforced frames are way better.
I can heat up my 56sm open plan kitchen / lounge / dinning room area on 2 gas panels as you can see in the photo.

I know not everyone can afford them. My 1 std size kitchen window frame - complete with double glazed laminated tinted glass, UPVC frame - including fitment came in at R16k a few years ago.

but the advantages for me are the thermal insulation and sound damping properties. - scoring a few bucks on heating or cooling costs is just a bonus. In summer I don't use or have an aircon - house is pleasantly cool compared to the heat outside.

Steel is horrible, but double glazed in aluminium will work, not as well as uPVC though.

We're thinking about moving our washing machine into a kind of wash room thing we got going on.
But to do this I would have to install an outlet pipe for it. The closest 'drain' is the exterior outlet pipe of a toilet. Would there be an issue with connecting the washing machine outlet to this?
I would assume it would require a p-bend pipe like sinks, toilets do to prevent any odors making it up.
Am I wrong?

You'll need to make sure any such installation complies with discharge stack requirements. You'll likely need to revert it back in the event that you sell your house.

Think about it this way. If for some reason the **** is pushed back up the pipe, where would it go?

Any contacts for a welder in JHB North? My dog decided to get its head stuck in the gate today and we had to grind the bar away so he could get out.
