Anybody here have film on their windows to block out sun/provide privacy? Which one did you go for (ie. silver 15, silver 30 etc), do they make the house too dark, do they make the house a lot cooler?

I wasn't thinking of the comedic aspect when my dog was stuck so no photos unfortunately.

It would have been hilariously funny if it wasn't for him being stuck by his neck and so his breathing was restricted.
True ... in retrospec it's not funny.

When I was still living in Pretoria I took a shower one afternoon. I still used to smoke that time, and smoked in the house so the doors were open but not the safety gates.

Whilst showering I heard the dog scream his lungs out so naturally I run out of the shower wet and naked, trying to figure out what is going on.

I noticed the dog's head was stuck in the safety gate so I got on my knees, behind him, trying to calm him down to get his head.

The screaming dog caused the neighbors to also peek over their wall to see wth is going on. They saw a dog with his head stuck in a safety gate, screaming and a naked skinny white guy on his knees behind the dog.

Film is only used to block the view from outsiders during the day. That's all. Probably blocks out some UV rays as well, but other than that, it doesn't do anything to the temperature in the house.

it does make it cooler from my experience

A side effect of the tinting is that it reduces visibility, main purpose is to reduce UV rays and keep the inside cooler..

Yea did the skylight in one of these.

Only cool light comes through vs the heat

The idea is to stop the intense sun from the North (sliding door) and get privacy in the office (South). Contractor recommended Silver 20. Will see how it goes.

Hehe I have had my kids stuck in burglar gates before. Yes, kids as in more than one, must be genetic...
The first one you panic, the second one you laugh and take pics.

Top tip - a car jack also works nicely to force the bars apart, a car jack exerts a tremendous amount of force

Yup... Had to use a car jack on my burglar guards when the one puppy got its head stuck..

Having just spent 22k for my burglar bars, I'll have to find a way to keep my puppy away from there until he is too big to get his head stuck.. (when I eventually get one)

Bathroom extractor fan, is this okay to just vent into the roof space..? This does not need a special piping that would route the moisture out of the roof space in some way..?

No extra piping needed, it goes into the roof

Should be fine to vent into the roof space...

Contacted SA Ladder re: my broken ladder - need to return it to them in Johannesburg for a quote on repairs, that's not happening - it'll cost more than a new ladder.

So Step 2 - Bought this ladder yesterday - its "only" 30cm shorther than my current ladder... discovered quickly that 30cm is a huge difference, I couldn't get into the roof last night for two reasons, one, its too short, and two - its damn unstable - I wouldn't use this ladder without someone holding it. With a reach height of 4.5m, you have a death wish using the ladder - it feels like I can twist it with my hands.

Initially I thought I could live with it - but then tried again this morning to get onto a 3m roof - there's no chance, I usually work alone, and our roof is up to 4.5m - so returned the ladder this morning. (couple of weeks ago I put up a flood light at 4m - it wouldn't have been possible with this ladder)

Back to original ladder, I tried to repair it - and did so successfully - the step is not going anywhere - but - two of the hinges are also stuffed and not locking, the actual mechanism broke off, tried drilling through them and putting in bolts, but its not a long term solution.

Guess my hunt for a ladder is still on.

In other news, to finish off my bar removal renovations - we went and had a look at fireplaces late this afternoon - and from my short list, we've settled on the following:

Rubin-Lux-Red2.jpg

https://hydrofire.co.za/product/rubin-lux-red/

Installed price is R33,700. Trying to see if I can scrap the funds together before months-end.

Get the extending slide ladders. All the folding ones feel flimsy.

Looks good, except I wouldn't do red after 10 years it would look dated.

Friend of mine did a red and white kitchen around 10 years ago and looks so aged.
