I fitted pvc into a small outside room by us. Was surprised how decent it came out, and easy it was to do. Must still do cornices, which I suspect I'm going to screw up royally.

Get a mitre box.. when you cut your angles, make sure to hold the cornice in the same position it's going to be in when attached to the wall.. then you just need to measure the lengths correctly and you'll be fine..

There's a special way to cut it it's called coping.

Yeah, just installed mine.. the critical part is ensuring that you do your cuts, holding the cornice in exactly the same position it will be in, once attached to the wall..

I have it.

It's not only the angle of wall but the plaster is also not level.

And sometimes the laminate floor is not level

Hi everyone, really interesting thread!

So just bought a flat and would like to attempt some DIY next year. Any advice would be appreciated :). The walls in the flat are bumpy (see picture) and I would like to make them smooth. Been doing some research and chatting to people. Apparently I need to skim coat the walls using Rhinolite or Polycell Finishing Plaster, but I have also been getting mixed information.

Would someone be able to kindly advise me on the following below :

1) How do I check if the current walls were made bumpy using plaster (I suspect this the case) or if it was made bumpy using paint?
2) Should I be attempting to skim coat a wall as a DIY project or should I be getting some professionals to do it?
3) If I just chose to live with the bumpy walls and wanted to paint it, is there any special prep work that needs to be done, due to the bumps? Or can I just wash with sugar soap and paint?

Thanks.

Try sanding a patch down and see what happens.

If getting rinolite get someone who knows rinolite as they need to "polish" it using a special technique.

You also need to use a bonding agent and it has to be tacky when applying the rinolite.

You could just wash and paint but these surfaces use more paint as it has more surface area.

Best decision I made was to smooth out all my walls.

You can skim the wall. Just make sure you use a good keying agent to prep the wall.

My outside house wall which is now the inside wall of my indoor braai was skimmed smooth.

Thanks.

Lets start: That is not paint bumps. Once the wall is plastered they use aTurolene machine that's shoot little blops of cement at the wall.

So you can do this in a few ways.

Scrape it with a big putty knife. re plaster
or
chop the plaster out and re plaster
or
key coat base coat the wall and then add a new layer of plaster.

I just painted my living area which has this finish with no prep. It was no different to painting the smooth walls.

I didn't even consider smoothing it since it seems like way too much effort.
And I've seen that even my builder can't apply a skim coat and I'm not in the mood to learn a tricky skill.

It's not that expensive I paid 30 per sqm for labour plus materials.
That's not bad at all hey, and what about skirting/cornice... do they remove that and put it back on again?
