The Home Improvements Thread (3)

Their address is listed as the same address as this place:

They have some pics there and they include some tools etc..

Perhaps one of the JHB guys can confirm the existence of their physical store in the Gantry lifestyle centre in Sandton..
also zero reviews on google...

Our kitchen reno is about to kick off, so I thought I would share costing for this curious and planning on doing their own kitchens in future.. Before and after pics to follow once all work is done...

Cupboards:
I am capable of doing these myself and will be, but was curious as to costs if done by a company.. Got one quote for 211k inclusive of 23k for granite countertops.. This consists of:

- 2.4 linear meters of wall hung cupboards
- 3 linear meters of floor to ceiling cupboards
- 8 linear meters of floor cupboards
- plinths, hinges, handles drawer runners (from Gelmar, not Blum level stuff)
- shaker style profile doors

I then got a quote for the wood, as I am doing it myself(wife changed her mind about a few things so ended up needing more wood than the above quote): 24k (admittedly this does not include profile doors, too expensive at 1250 ex vat a sqm)..
Hinges, handles, plinths etc is coming to 6k..

So I am at total of 30k doing the cupboards myself, as opposed to ~180k per above quote.. Waiting on countertop quote, expecting 20-30k.. If we did do profile doors, it would have come to 20k.. So in a like for like with the above quote, still coming in less than 50% cheaper doing it ourselves..

Tiling, electrical, plumbing:
55sqm of floor
20sqm of wall
Demo and rubble removal
add 4 electrical points
31k

Any plumbing I am doing myself..

Total: 80-90k (including the pending quote for countertops) we are still deciding on a sink and mixer, conservatively 5k for this..

I am not including cost of tiles, since this will depend on your choice of tiles..

We will in future do the profile doors, when we feel the kitchen could do with a mini reno..

That 110mm waste pipe is the culprit for the high plumbing cost..

yeah but I would rather do this job properly than have issues in the future.

2 drains, washing machine and dishwasher go through there. and its set into a foundation.

Is what it is... all growed up now.. this renovation is more "adulting" than buying the house.

The hinges and runners are something you do not skimp on.
Niks so kak soos n kak hinge of runner nie.

Edit: Every time you open and close those drawers and they are buttery smooth you get that aaaaaaah feeling. Or when you close the drawer just with a tap and the self closer kicks in. Hmmmmmmm

Hijack: Has anyone bought from Twin Tools in Sandton? I'm interested in this drill but the price is almost R1k cheaper than elsewhere. If it's too good to be true, then... is playing on my mind.

Just to get back to this. They are legit. FB Link

I see they now have the tooling section on the same premises. They are also the importing agents for the Freyr & Devik silencer I got from them.

I spoke to Lezaan if that helps.

That's where Gelmar has you covered, selling great quality stuff at extremely reasonable prices.. never had a hinge or runner break that I have bought from them..
Yes, Gelmar has some decent stuff at good prices too.
But as with everything in life, you can decide how far you wanna go.

If you spending a ton on a new kitchen with the best of the best you might as well go with the best hinges and runners. I must confess I think I have Gelmar hinges and runners in my place. Have not had issues with them.
But when we redid my folk's kitchen a few years ago they went all out and you get some next-level stuff.

Tell them to change fb link on their website

We waited years to redo our kitchen. This is still the 40 year old original kitchen so it was the redo likely to last its lifetime. Also going with a "timeless" vibe so it doesn't have to be replaced again.

Update:

Countertops quote came to 18k installed.. thats 5.12sqm worth of countertop.. chose a 9mm porcelain based stone as the countertop.. had a great special on it at 900 per sqm..

This was when I moved in 2015. House is almost 10 years old now. Not sure how, if, or when I would redo the kitchen.

This is now. Bit messy. And one downlight lost its clip, must get to that. Also I have a bit of an obsession with Hurley caps. Have about 12 of them hanging there. Should probably get a dedicated cap hanger thing to open up that space.

Amazing to think that's 10 years old, it looks brand new and very modern even by today's standards. Just shows the advantage of a voor op die wa architect. Do you happen to know the company who designed it?

Yeah, I know the guy who did all the cabinets and the kitchen in this house. Let's just say I would run him over if I found him in the street.

We don't see eye to eye.
