New 2021 Hyundai i20 N brings 201bhp for £24,995

Hyundai’s long-awaited challenger to the Ford Fiesta ST, the i20 N, is now available to order, priced at £24,995 before options. Described as a “race-track-capable hot hatch”, it is said to take inspiration from the brand’s successful i20 World Rally Championship car.

At the core of the i20 N’s performance aspirations is a new 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. Tuned for 201bhp and 203lb ft, it is sufficient to achieve a quoted 0-62mph time of 6.7sec and a top speed of 143mph.

Hyundai claims one of the best power-to-weight ratios in the class, at 169bhp per tonne, compared with 156bhp per tonne for the 197bhp Fiesta ST.

The new engine uses an uprated turbocharger and intercooler, plus a 350 bar fuel injection system and Hyundai’s new Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD) technology. CVVD is claimed to boost both performance and fuel efficiency compared with a traditional set-up.

Should I buy one?

You’ve got to hand it to Hyundai. They could have toddled off and built a warmed-over i20, ratcheted up the marketing hype and counted the cash. The fact there is real engineering integrity and depth of character to this car speaks volumes as to the company’s intent. And it’s single-minded intent at that, as this is one of the most focused hot hatches we’ve driven recently.

Hyundai has obviously set out to create a pure performance hatch - consider the brief met. And then some.

HOT HATCH FIGHT: HYUNDAI I20N VS FORD FIESTA ST VS MINI JCW

The mesmerising Ford Fiesta ST seems unbeatable. Can an all-new super-Hyundai - or tweaked Mini – topple the champ?

The killer ace the Ford lauds over the newcomer is its splendid 197bhp three-cylinder engine. Throttle inputs are crisper than the Hyundai’s lazier four-pot, which lags below 3,000rpm and responds lethargically to throttle blips if you choose to DIY. The ST also makes a fruitier, more exotic offbeat thrum, like a BMW M3 that’s swallowed a balloonful of helium in a drinking game dare.

Tiny margins, but important ones. The Fiesta is sillier. For me, that’s enough to give the Fiesta the narrowest victory of its life, but it's as close as these tests get. I just happen to prefer the Ford’s less fussy looks, its more mobile rear end, and its gearshift, though that might be purely because the gearknob itself feels more expensive than the Hyundai’s. And that engine is the topper the Ford needs to stay ahead. Just.

And if that sounds fickle, then it’s because these two cars mostly can’t be split on merit, only on preference. You can’t go wrong.

Drive both. Buy either. And be thankful that, for a little while longer, they’re still here at all.

How much does the Hyundai i20 cost in South Africa?

You can get behind the wheel of the new Hyundai i20 from R275 900. This turbocharged 1.0T Fluid derivative retails for R330 900 and its automatic counterpart costs R355 900. Every Hyundai i20 sold comes with a 5-year/150 000 km manufacturer’s warranty and an additional 2-year/50 000 km powertrain warranty, a 5-year/160 000 km perforation warranty, 7 years (or until 150 000 km) roadside assistance, as well as a 4-year/60 000 km service plan with intervals at every 15 000 km.

Verdict

With the 3rd iteration of the i20, Hyundai has addressed the major shortcomings of the previous-gen model – and quite effectively so. Not only does it boast a powertrain that’s more than a match (in terms of performance and, seemingly, efficiency) for the segment’s best, it offers good on-road refinement, a reasonably pliant ride quality, as well as an engaging driving experience.

Plus, don’t forget about the glut of standard features: in 1.0T Fluid guise, the Korean firm’s newcomer comes fitted, as standard, with nearly every convenience that one would expect a compact hatchback cabin to offer. Even if some of its interior plastics seem a bit harsh to the touch, when you factor in Hyundai’s comprehensive warranty and service plan, the new i20 makes a very compelling case for itself.

Should you buy one? If you’re shopping for a compact hatchback, you’d be forgiven for being overwhelmed by how much choice is out there. With its potent engine, modern interior and after-sales offering, the new i20 has leapfrogged many offerings in the segment and is jostling, once again, for best-in-class honours. Ignore the polarising looks and give it a test drive, you may be pleasantly surprised.

That finer moment of playfulness as the Fiesta ST lets its rear axle slip while, in the same moment, the i20 N is hunkering down for a grip-and-go exit? That tips it in the Ford’s favour. If you want the fastest cross-country runner or the most theatrical small hot hatch, there’s no competition here. But if you want the sweetest-handling, more purist experience, and never mind the speed, the Ford is the one for you, for me and, well, as the last decade or so has already proven, for just about everyone.

Should I buy one?

The i20 N Line has quite a different character from the standard i20, which errs more towards the comfortable, laid-back end of the market. If you just want a standard i20 with a touch more power, the N Line might become tiresome, but if you’re after something with a taut chassis and a noisy exhaust, the N Line will deliver.

The trouble is that there are some very good ‘warm hatch’ alternatives that offer actual warm hatch performance. Ford makes the Fiesta ST-Line, with a 153bhp version of the excellent Ecoboost triple for about the same money, and Suzuki is currently offering £2000 off its Swift Sport, making it a tad cheaper than the Hyundai at £20,070.

Bearing in mind that the N Line comes fully loaded, with the only possible additional extra being a premium paint finish, it’s a good effort, particularly if you can find a deal on one.

REVIEW | Nippy Hyundai i20 1.0T an agile surprise as new turbo engine impresses

• Hyundai's new i20 launched in South Africa earlier in 2021.

• The i20 is powered by two engines, including this 1.0-litre turbocharged mill.

• The i20's powertrain fits its well, but the ride quality is not on the same level.

The Hyundai i20 has become somewhat of an institution in South Africa. Popular beyond what the Korean automaker could have imagined, the car is a real contender to the likes of the evergreen Volkswagen Polo and Ford's Fiesta. But while these two rivals kick the i20's butt every month when sales scores are tallied, the i20 has always stood its ground and is perhaps one of the best value-for-money in the entire South African car parc.

Earlier in 2021, Hyundai South Africa launched the all-new i20 in the country, with the top model, the 1.0-litre turbo Fluid, implementing the automaker's familiar 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated with a six-speed manual gearbox (a seven-speed automatic is also available). It's a drivetrain combination that works exceptionally well, gifting the car with performance not expected of it. It's not i30N fast, but it's a welcome surprise.

Following a few days driving the i20 1.0 Turbo decked in its two-tone hue, we came away impressed at what Hyundai has brought to the table. It's not a perfect car, and a jaunt through some of the Cape's finest roads brought a few shortcomings to the fore.

In summary

There's a reason why Hyundai is among the top four best-selling automakers in South Africa: its vehicles are properly good. From the Atos the forthcoming Palisade, there is a vehicle for everyone, except those hoping that the Santa Cruise bakkie would have made its way to our shores. But despite the absence of a bakkie, Hyundai South Africa's product portfolio is a strong one and has given the brand a solid foothold in the country. Cars like the i20 have become cornerstone models, and their importance can't be denied. In its latest iteration, the i20 is another impressive offering, with the turbo model acting as the ideal headliner.

At the end of two long days and several thousands of collective test miles, our five-man jury agreed that they had been in the company of two driver’s cars truly fit for Aberdeenshire’s spectacular roads in this year’s Britain’s Best Affordable Driver’s Car contest – but only one was really a deserving winner. That car was the wonderfully – perhaps even surprisingly – purposeful Hyundai i20 N.

As is the way with these things, each judge gave each competing car a score out of a maximum 25 marks on the basis of driver appeal versus value for money, because that’s how BBADC works. The i20 N was the only car impressive enough to score 20 marks or higher consistently. Only one car could have beaten it, and only then if we had allowed the marks of the Caterham Super Seven to stand in a field against which it was competing with the benefit of so many natural advantages. In the end, we simply couldn’t.
