The Hyundai i20 Thread

Hyundai i20 N 2021 UK review

Should I buy one?

A real twin test with the Ford Fiesta ST awaits, and what a prospect that is. Two brilliant cars with similar ability, a similar asking price, but marginally different ethos.

But whatever the outcome of the contest, the i20 N is a sensational addition to the super-supermini clique. It has something of the rally refugee about it, if you’ll excuse the cliché, even though its slightly serious demeanour most of the time makes it easier to like than love.

Clearly we’ll have to spend more time with the punchy little Hyundai, because aside from the vaguely one-dimensional 1.6-litre motor, there’s serious depth in this package, and it needs exploring.

In the meantime, as something every bit as usable as it is searingly fast and rewarding to drive, the i20 N deserves all the plaudits that are surely coming its way.

The 2020 Hyundai i20 : A Close Look & Preview - Team-BHP

Hyundai has finally taken the wraps off the India-spec third-generation i20, and we got to preview the car in Mumbai just before the official launch. It has been launched today at Rs. 6.80 lakh to Rs. 11.18 lakh.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, the i20 was slated for an international launch at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2020.

However, since the motor show got cancelled, the i20 was globally unveiled online and now that the restrictions are easing up worldwide, we have the official launch this festive season in India.

You might have seen pictures of the Euro-spec car and yes, it looks very similar to the Indian-spec i20. However, the car for international markets is longer than the Indian car.

Reason? The India-spec car’s length has been trimmed down to 3,995 mm to meet the sub-4m category and reap tax benefits. The good news, however, is that the wheelbase has been kept the same as the Euro-spec car at 2,580 mm.

Compared to the previous generation Elite i20, this wheelbase is up by 10 mm and Hyundai claims that the interiors are much more spacious than before (more on this later). The car is now wider by 41 mm than the previous generation model at 1,775 mm.

The height, however, has been left unchanged at 1,505 mm. The third generation i20 is built on Hyundai-Kia’s K-platform series. Different versions of this platform underpin the current crop of cars from the Korean manufacturer since 2017.

The i20 will get a 1.0L turbocharged petrol (we love this motor), a 1.2L naturally-aspirated petrol and a 1.5L turbocharged diesel engine (we love this one too).

Hyundai will offer a 7-speed DCT and a clutchless Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) with the 118 BHP, 1.0L turbocharged petrol engine.

The 87 BHP, 1.2L Petrol will be available with a 5-speed manual transmission or CVT automatic.

The 99 BHP, 1.5L diesel engine is offered only with a 6-speed manual transmission.

I don't understand the logic of not offering the Diesel AT, especially when Kia is now offering it in the Sonet. There are many Diesel AT fans in India.

There are loads of features including LED projector headlamps with LED DRLs, LED taillamps, projector fog lamps, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, sunroof, wireless charging, 10.24-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, 7-speaker audio system by BOSE, Bluelink connected car technology, 6 airbags, electronic stability control, hill assist control and more.

The new i20 will be available in four variants - Magna, Sportz, Asta and Asta (O).

Hyundai is offering a choice of 3 years / 100000 km, 4 years / 50000 km or 5 years / 40000 km as the standard warranty packages. That's unique & very welcome!

Extended warranty up to 5 years / 140000 km can be purchased additionally. We strongly recommend this extension.

Hyundai is further offering 3 years Road Side Assistance and 3 years Bluelink subscription with the i20.

The i20 features a body structure that comprises of 66% Advanced High-Strength Steel. Hyundai claims they have managed to get 13% higher tensile strength from the structure of the new i20.

Saw it at the local Hyundai dealership in the parking lot. Didn't have the turbo badge so I suspect it might've been the 1.2 model.

Interesting little car, but I was browsing and I couldn't find any euro NCAP/global NCAP/asean NCAP or ANCAP tests for it at all.
After the previous i20 turned out to be 3 star Global NCAP, it would be nice to see if they improved.
The Indian spec Asta model comes with 6 airbags and ESC too so I hope they keep that for the top models, along with all the tech and convenience features available on the Asta.

Shakedown! Hyundai’s new 2022 WRC hybrid challenger goes testing

Reigning World Rally Championship constructor Hyundai has been testing a prototype version of its hybrid-powered 2022 entry in southern France. Images of the Rally1 car undergoing a proper shakedown for the first time were released albeit in camouflage guise.

Eagle-eyed readers will notice the South Korean carmaker’s effort is based on its i20 N hot hatch.

The aim of the outing was to understand the car’s behaviour, its strengths and weaknesses and to plan the next steps according to the findings of this first outing for the German-based team.

“It’s a special moment when you take a car to the road for the first time and as always there are some challenges to face,” said Hyundai Motorsport Team Principal Andrea Adamo.

The team, which was established in 2012, is tight-lipped on the Rally1’s technical features and exterior appearance as the press images illustrate. They wouldn’t even say which of their four drivers was behind the wheel in France. All we do know is that the hybrid powered rally car, featuring a combustion engine and an electric motor, will be in accordance with the FIA regulation for next year’s championship.

“We are starting from scratch with brand-new rules, a different concept and a new base model, the Hyundai i20 N,” Adamo said.

Engine and Transmission

Hyundai is offering its new i20 with a blend of naturally-aspirated petrol and turbocharged petrol engines and customers have the choice of manual, automatic or dual-clutch transmissions.

Kicking off the range is a naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder motor developing 61 kW and 115 Nm, which is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and is claimed to consume 5.9 L/100 km.

For those wanting an automatic, Hyundai offers its i20 with a slightly more powerful 1.4-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which produces 74 kW and 133 Nm. This powertrain claims a fuel economy figure of 7.5 L/100 km.

Sitting at the top of the range is the new 1.0-litre turbocharged, 3-cylinder engine with 90 kW and 171 Nm on tap. Customers can choose from a manual gearbox or a quick-shifting dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The manual-equipped version returns 6.5 L/100 km, while its DCT sibling is a touch thirstier at 6.9 L/100 km.

Pricing: New Hyundai i20 lands in SA, with turbo power

The third-generation Hyundai i20 hatchback has arrived in South Africa, sporting a bold new look and – for the first time – the option of turbo power.

Hyundai has also tweaked the proportions to match the sportier look with overall width increasing by 30mm and height being reduced by 24mm, while overall length has grown by just 5mm. Boot space, meanwhile, has grown by 25 litres to a commendable 351 litres.

Here’s how much the new range costs:

1.2 Fluid manual – R289 900

1.4 Motion auto – R305 900

1.0T Fluid manual – R330 900

1.0T Fluid auto – R355 900

Fluid models can be ordered with a two-tone exterior paint scheme for an additional R5000

Wider range of engines

Buyers now have a wider range of engines to choose from, with the long-awaited arrival of the 1-litre turbopetrol option. This three-cylinder unit packs a punch to the tune of 89.5 kW and 171.6 N.m, which is enough to get it from 0-100 km/h in 9.7 seconds, according to Hyundai. Customers opting for the turbo variants can choose between a six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch DCT gearbox.

For those on a tighter budget, Hyundai has carried over the two previous normally aspirated motors, these being a 1.2-litre unit with 61 kW and 115 N.m on tap and a 1.4-litre that’s rated at 73.6 kW and 133 N.m. The 1.2-litre is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, and the 1.4 can only be had with a six-speed automatic.

The most affordable model in the range is the 1.2 Fluid (R289 900), which actually has a higher specification than the 1.4 Motion auto, which sacrifices some spec to offer the bigger 1.4-litre engine with an auto gearbox at a relatively affordable price.

Specification is pretty basic compared to what you get from it's rivals and it's ugly

Well at least now we know that the Corsa no longer has the crown for being small and pricey. You know back in my day the smaller engines made less power. But I guess this is what we get for gender neutrality. Now each displacement can choose the power it delivers.

Suddenly the Polo looks like a very attractive proposition, top safety spec and performance, the two most important things in a car.

Hyundai has always been the leader, pricey and underspecced.

Hyundai i20 (2021) Launch Review

Hyundai has launched its new i20 compact hatchback in Mzansi. We got behind the 'wheel of the Korean firm's Volkswagen Polo fighter to see if it's any good.

Summary

While the new Hyundai i20's looks won't appeal to everyone – its bold appearance represents quite a departure from that of the previous model – the newcomer does move the game along significantly. Not only has it finally received an energetic and punchy engine to keep pace with those of its rivals, but its specification (at the price) comfortably eclipses the competition in terms of outright value.

The i20's driving manners have improved dramatically too. Indeed, this Korean compact hatchback offers a modicum of genuine driver involvement and feels far more involving to pilot than before; it's a veritable quantum leap from the 1st-generation model's insular driving experience. A sporty Hyundai that doesn't have an N badge? What is the world coming to? We like this place.

Combined with the substantial warranty and after-sales back-up (including a 4-year/60 000 km service plan) offered by the Korean brand's local subsidiary, we think there might be a short-term stock shortage of the new i20. Hyundai South Africa said that no fewer than 45 units drove off showroom floors on the first official day of sales – a strong indication of things to come, perhaps?

Evidently, Hyundai has come out swinging with its new i20. It knows that while its SUV models bring in significant sales, it still needs to have a strong offering in the compact hatchback segment and the latest generation i20 will certainly nick more than a few sales from its rivals. Whether it can match the segment-leading Volkswagen Polo remains to be seen, but that's what group tests are for, right?

How much does the new Hyundai i20 cost in South Africa?

The new Hyundai i20 is sold with a 5-year/150 000 km manufacturer's warranty and an additional 2-year/50 000 km powertrain warranty, a 5-year/160 000 km perforation warranty, 7 years' (or until 150 000 km) roadside assistance, as well as a 4-year/60 000 km service plan with intervals at every 15 000 km.
