Korean manufacturer remains committed to compact car markets; weighing up entry EVs
Hyundai is planning next-generation versions of the Hyundai i10 city car, Hyundai i20 supermini and Hyundai i30 family car – and is considering how it can offer entry-level EVs in the future.
The Korean brand’s i10 is one of a rapidly shrinking number of city cars on sale in the UK, due to the challenges safety and emissions regulations present in making small machines profitable – and buyers increasingly turning to EVs.
But while some rivals are abandoning the market for city cars and traditional hatchbacks in favour of expanding their SUV line-ups, Hyundai is committed to the markets, said European chief Michael Cole.
Talking to Autocar at the launch of the second-generation Kona crossover, Cole said: “We're strategising now about what comes beneath [the] Kona long-term. For now, [the] i10, i20, i30 are all still in our plan, even for the next generation. We’re looking at what we have. Exactly what we will have across those three lines, I can’t say today.”

Despite the overwhelming trend of going full electric, Korean brand Hyundai has confirmed that some of its compact lineup will see another generation.
The news comes via UK publication Autocar, which spoke to Hyundai European chief Michael Cole at the recent Hyundai Kona event. The main stumbling block to mainstream electric car adoption is the price. Why should consumers pay more? Even with government assistance via grants and incentives, electric cars are generally more expensive.

Elegant and sporty design
The new Hyundai i20 boasts a sleek and modern exterior that makes an eye-catching statement on the road. Shape and pattern of the front bumper, as well as the radiator grille, have been enhanced to create an elegant look with sporty elements. The rear features a redesigned bumper and a unique taillight design. Newly designed 16- and 17-inch wheels have been added.
New Hyundai i20's design has been praised for its emotional and dynamic styling that harmonises proportion, architecture, styling, and technology on both the exterior and interior. The model retains its sporty stance thanks to its low roof profile and long wheelbase. These features enhance the vehicle's aerodynamics by lowering air resistance, which also improves handling and heightens fuel efficiency. A dynamic light signature emphasises its overall bold look, punctuated by Z-shaped LED rear lamps. Even with compact B-segment dimensions, the new i20 offers customers plenty of interior room, as well as 352 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, and 1,165 litres with the rear seats folded down.
This new addition to Hyundai's line-up is available in eight exterior colours and an optional black two-tone roof. Three exterior colours are brand-new: Lucid Lime Metallic, Lumen Grey Pearl, and Meta Blue Pearl. Returning colours include Atlas White, Phantom Black Pearl, Aurora Grey Pearl, Dragon Red Pearl, and Mangrove Green Pearl.

Hyundai has revealed a facelifted i20 hatchback, which it hopes can revive declining sales for the Ford Fiesta rival.
With a subtle redesign, new interior technology and occupant safety systems as standard, the new Hyundai i20 will arrive in the third quarter of this year to build on last year’s 59,914 sales – a 5% decrease on 2021.
The supermini was the Korean manufacturer’s third best-selling car between 2021 and 2022.
A Hyundai spokesman was unable to confirm if the hot Hyundai i20 N will return, but said it will likely return to showrooms at a future date.
Hyundai has treated this regular i20 to a redesigned front and rear bumper, new 16in and 17in alloy wheels and new Z-shape LED lights front and rear.
The low roof profile and relatively long wheelbase have been retained in order to maintain its aerodynamics and sporty stance, Hyundai said.

Hyundai has released images of the newly facelifted i20. Bedecked in Lucid Lime, the striking paint job masks the minimal changes made in this gentle refresh.
Exterior changes centre on subtly redesigned front and rear bumpers, a new pattern for the radiator grille, a trio of ‘bold’ new colour choices, some tweaks to the tail light design and some fancy star-sculpted rims.
Though a wider choice of engines might have been handy, the i20's 1.0-litre three-pot mild-hybrid unit - whether in 100bhp or 120bhp guise - has been refined to maximise efficiency and performance, though we've not been given any more info.
Inside, updates include a switch from lightbulbs to LEDs to give better control over the ambient lighting. The 4.2-inch standard touchscreen and infotainment suite now support a USB-C charging port, the second-gen eCall tech and over-the-air (OTA) updates using the integrated 4G SIM card.

While some such as the Ford Fiesta and Kia Rio are exiting the market, Hyundai is adding some colour to the B-Segment hatchback market with its refreshed i20.
Revealed in Europe this week, the updated Hyundai i20 gets an exterior revamp, new colour combos and subtle interior revisions to keep it fresh until the next generation arrives.
The front end, while retaining its familiar look, has been restyled, with a new grille and bumper design that flows more seamlessly into the reprofiled headlights, which now have black surrounds.
At the back end we see a new bumper design, incorporating a larger diffuser that spans its length, and the taillights have also been given a refresh.
But that’s not all, as Hyundai also boasts of newly designed 16-inch and 17-inch alloy wheel designs and there’s a range of bright new colours as well as a two-tone roof colour option.

Hyundai has given the i20 a bit of a refresh. As we learned back in May, the new-look supermini now comes with a bigger cache of safety and convenience tech, plus bigger wheels and a greater choice of bodywork colours, including two-tone (yeah, baby).
They say ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, so exterior changes to the Hyundai are microscopically mild: new grille, new front bumper, fancy lights, not much else.
As before, all models come with a 1.0-litre turbocharged mild hybrid engine and a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Your trim level options are Advance, Premium and Ultimate, and now we have prices to go on: the range starts from £20,770, topping out at £25,320. Remember the days when a posh full-size hatchback cost that much?
