Android fanboys are always on about their hardware

Have you ever watched an Apple keynote? They're the first ones to go on and on and on about their hardware specs. Does that make Tim Cook an Android fanboy?

The iPhone doesn't need "epic hardware" because it has epic software that doesn't need "epic hardware" to reach epic heights that android phones just can't

One thing that has become quite clear in this round of iPhone reviews is that the hardware is great (Apple hardware is always very good), but iOS really is getting long in the tooth. Even die-hard Apple sites are starting to acknowledge this. They need more than another coat of paint and tweaks, which iOS7 and iOS8 did.

Android L is basically a coat of paint and tweaks to Android; and iOS8 contains some quite fundamental system updates like Handoff, Continuity, Apple Pay and some serious new developer APIs like Metal, Extensibility with Share Sheets, Homekit, Healthkit, etc. iOS7 was basically just a new design but iOS8 will make iOS a lot more powerful. I don't think they'll ever move away from the rows-of-icons appearance, but that alone doesn't make it long in the tooth.

I've been using an iPhone for 4 years.. got a Galaxy S5 two months ago and a iPhone 6 last week.

I prefer my S5. iPhone is pretty and all, but I just prefer Android now. I had Jellybean and prior devices before and they sucked but it's come a long way.

I don't use Samsung Touchwiz, I use Nova launcher.

It kind of does. Because it's a lot more than just that - it's the way the whole UI works and the way hundreds of thousands of apps are built around it; Apple is having the same problem that Microsoft had (has?) with Windows; they have such a gigantic user base and ecosystem designed around it, and it's absolutely necessary to break a lot of that to make fundamental changes to the UI (think Windows Mobile -> Windows Phone). It's a huge gamble. It's not a good or bad reflection on Apple, it's just normal product cycles that every company is subject to.

Maybe you can give a case where the UI is a frustration to iOS? I'm struggling here. I really think they looked at widgets on teh homescreen quite deeply and just decided against it. The changes they're making now such as Extensibility in iOS8 won't break anything existing. And when they made a very fundamental design shift as in iOS7 it didn't take too long for apps to catch up. They've never been afraid of breaking what's currently there to make something better. But maybe you have some concrete examples?

So was iOS7, but fundamentally the change people cared about was the redesign. Of course the move from Dalvik will be a really big deal in Android too. There's nothing at all wrong with making an OS update that focuses heavily on design though.

So I got my hands on my dads iphone 6 yesterday.... and its cool.. but i wasn't blown away by it. I've got the 5, and i am undecided if i will proceed with my purchase (ordered from FNB last week)...

You use iTunes on a Windows or Mac PC.

All of the iPhone 6es (I'm still mulling that one over) came pre-installed with iOS 8.
