Material design has a specific section dealing with bottom navigation: https://material.io/design/components/bottom-navigation.html#usage
The top-left back button in most apps correspond to pressing the back button on the bottom left as well.
One thing I'd love, is that the mobile browsers on android also used the swipe rightwards for back.

In regards to bottom bottom navigation:
Spotify has.
Gmail uses top left back and bottom left back. Bottom right compose button.
WhatsApp and Telegram: both integration with bottom left back button, both bottom right compose. Telegram includes the swipe right to go back to all chats.

And as previous person said, near all have hamburger menu via swipe right from furthest left. You can also add the notification drop-down button to the navigation menu at the bottom.

Both iOS and Android are good, personally prefer Android for phones, iOS for tablets. It's an argument of what you're used to/prefer, pricing wise, most Android phones are cheaper for the same performance, but they also have really bad phones for the price, and don't bring in those cheap R2-3k phones.

Hmm not a fan of being forced to use gestures but at least there are options.

Was more referring to the baseline graphical button design language.

Interesting you mention WhatsApp and Telegram because both irritate me with compose top right (iOS now) while getting the basic navigation right with buttons all at the bottom.

It does make sense from a frequent usage perspective point of view but it still irritates me each time I need to use it.

Android fails by having the navigation buttons which you use more often all at the top, even though they have compose right.

I do like the Android back button though and got use to it quickly so much so that I missed it when it was gone. No big hassle though using the software version on iOS but it is the wrong place.

I often didn’t like the unexpected behaviour of the Back button on Android though but can’t remember the exact issue.

Yeah, in regards to top navigation, that's app specific and not OS specific. Most larger vendors implement it correctly. I'd still love an app shortcut to quickly access the ⋮ that's intuitive.

Oh yes I didn’t mean every app just that it’s inherent to the OS as such due to Google prescribed design language and you find it even with the Google apps on iOS for that reason.

You can pretty much tell by this design language whether an app was iOS or Android first in many cases.

When you include price it's not only about Android vs iOS, unless you're talking specifically about iPhone X, because you do get budget iOS.

The crux here is - can i enjoy a feature full, the top of the range Apple device for a ¼ of the price?

Answer is a resounding no, but you can with Android, as were now seeing with the Pocophone F1.
