The iPhone Tips/Tricks/Apps thread part 2

Hahaha not necessarily a convert, but have to use one for now. Ive had an iPhone before, so no issues. The iPhone notification system is a lot more refined than Android though

What app are you guys using to download YouTube videos and the like, I had an awesome one but it got pulled from the App Store - I don't want to jailbreak

So I'm trying to copy my Apps off my iPhone (iOS 10.2.1) to my PC - either iTunes or desktop. Is there a way of doing this? iTunes has the "Transfer purchases to PC" option but it doesn't do anything.

Basically I still have the older (non-crap) version of Whatsapp and people want it

WhatsApp disable old versions so they don't work at all forcing you to upgrade to the latest version whether you want to or not.

I think the 'Transfer purchases' option was disabled with the introduction of 'App thinning' in iOS9. App thinning has the effect of selecting only those bits of code that apply to your specific device, and prevents you from saving any app that has the code allowing it to run on various different iDevices. Transfer purchases was my favourite way of saving apps prior to a restore, but it's now crippled.

True but they haven't disabled the pre-crap version yet, I'm still running it, hence the desire to back it up.

I know, this is what I am trying to get around. Was hoping for a 3rd party app that could do it, but haven't found one yet.

Jailbreak and off you go.

Have you tried iFunbox? Haven't used it recently but I'm sure it had an app backup facility last time I used it.

I use iFunbox, it does indeed have the backup facility, but I don't know whether that works on non-JB devices. Worth a try though.

Not willing to jailbreak the device. Also if I did our MDM would block it until reverted.

Will try iFunbox and let you know. Thanks chaps.

I do confirm, since iOS9 you can't backup application from your device. It is iOS 'feature'. Silly, iTunes do not transfer apps anymore, even if apps are full-body like in my case. It suggests for future to download applications using iTunes, then install it by iTunes on all your devices.

I had the same problem when trying to transfer apps from iPhone 4 (iOS7) to iPad mini 2 (iOS 9). With iOS8 or below the older version of iTunes will backup application to the local library on the hard drive, but no longer with iTunes 12.

Alternatively iTolls will do it (perhaps iFunbox too). iTools was helping me in these cases:

1. Importing apps from iTunes library located on the old computer to the new one. There is a way (or at least it was before) to do it in iTunes, but obscured.

2. Backing up apps to the hard drive from iPhone (iOS8 or below). You have options to backup apps only or with together data. iTools maintains local apps library (independent from iTunes). I transfered Documents 5 with all its files to the iPad.

3. Installing applications on the device from ipa file. The same as iTunes do, but iTools maintains older versions of the app, while iTunes normally remove older versions. It is very useful in my case having older device which do not run the latest apps.

There are many other options, which I didn't use. Translation is incomplete. When bushes pop up, it is better to press ESC key. ;)

I might have missed it in the previous thread, but what do you guys do lately for ringtones? I didn't mind buying them, but I see that when you upgrade and you didn't backup it up through iTunes, you have to purchase it again. :seriously?:

Anyway, iTunes only have a limited number of ring tones...
