WOW... the more I play around after the 2.2 update the more I'm impressed. Everything feels a lot more snappier and stable... damn this is good news. Can't wait to get home and see if my signal strength is a bit better (yeah yeah, I'm pushing it now but a man can dream right?!)

fxit_man : From http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20081121-lots-to-like-about-new-iphone-2-2-software-update.html

"The update weighs in at the average size of 246MB (each iPhone OS update is the entire OS, ensuring a clean install), and can be downloaded by plugging your iPhone or iPod touch into iTunes and using the "Check for Updates" feature."

Are you referring to my comment regarding the update procedure using more storage on the phone?

Do me a favour: Plug you iPhone into iTunes. Under the Capactiy menu, how much space is used for "Other" ? Although it would have been best to check after installing Cydia programs as this counts towards the other figure.

I have installed:
- OpenSSH
- SBSettings
- StatusNotifier
- Five icon dock
- Cycorder

Those few progs shouldnt be more than a few megs in total though..

Yeah I was referring to that. Mine shows 352.2 MB under "Other". But I'm sure to have some ebooks etc. on there.

Here's most of the apps I have on:
iProRecorder, Cycorder, Remote, WeDict, PocketTouch, Sketches, mBoxMail, BeejiveIM, Last.fm, Fring, Stanza, Shazam, PdaNet, FriendSync, Snap, GPS Lite, GPS Tracker, iPhysics Lite

P.S. That "FriendSync" app...FTW!!!!....Sync your facebook friends' pictures with your phonebook... :D:D:D

Was only referring to the Cydia apps as they count towards the "Other" category. App Store apps count towards the "Apps" category.

257.8 MB on mine. Out of the apps you mentioned, only a few are Cydia apps. Therefore I think I can conclude that restoring does use less space up on the phone. Unless you have 100MB of eBooks of course.

Sounds cool! Thx

ok, so I just jailbroke my 2.2 firmware 3g. Now for those ipa files, will i need a new version of the mobileinstallation file or will the old one work fine?

iTunes 8.0.1 (12). So I guess I can go ahead and do the update. Now to wait for those files to download.......

The one from 2.1 works fine. It's the same file apparently. Make a backup just in case however. What i do is rename the current one to *.bak.

:)
So you have a SA account and a US account. Never thought of that. So you just log out, create one in the SA store? And swop between them?

No that's not what I meant. The firmware links are the same anyways i think. All that happens is (thanks to Akamai) the Apple update servers are mirrored here locally, so we can grab Apple updates locally ;)

So what i meant by local account was rather a local ADSL account :) Works out cheaper.. 250mb of local is much cheaper than 250mb of international bandwidth ;)

so if i have an old normal non 3g iphone that is activated , i can run a update (even if it takes more space ) and my phone will run fine?

Ok guys, I'm a bit confused with the soft unlock and upgrades, etc, when it comes to jailbreaking 2.2

Basically here is the situation:

On Friday my iphone 3g randomly stopped working. Lost signal and kept saying sim locked. I would unlock it, but in two minutes the same message would pop up. The OS kept hanging as well. Turning on and off didn't help. Eventually a message appeared saying something along the lines of - the phone cannot make calls and needs to be serviced.

Connected to itunes and couldn't restore. It downloaded the latest itunes but said I could not restore because internet connection could not be established. Was totally freaking out at this point. Did a hard DFU restore - still no internet connection message, even though the connection was fine - I could access the itunes store, etc. Just not restore.

Tried on my friends laptop - same problem. We kept doing putting it into DFU mode and eventually it worked - iphone was restored and then upgraded to 2.2.

My question is - can/should I jailbreak now? I'm not not sure because of all the warning messages about the soft unlock, baseband, etc.

Yes.

We explained this earlier a few posts up.. It only affects those that do not have a legally unlocked iPhone. If you bought your iPhone here in SA from Vodacom, it is legally unlocked.

Thanks dude :)

Any idea as to why I had such major problems restoring after the phone f***ed out on me?
