Ok, so I have another idea! Seeing as I have Swirly installed on the one phone already, is there a way I can copy the files through SSH from one to the other? If so, which files?

Thx

hi guys once the iphone is launched here on friday will my vodacom sim work without the turbosim

no, I don't think it will, if your phone needs to work with turbosim, that means that it was bought in another country which means it was activated to that countries provider, so US AT&T, UK 02 etc. So it will never work with a Vodacom Sim card. Unless Vodacom offers an unlock option, which I don't see why they should, its not their problem.
If only the dev team could unearth an unlock!

heres a scenario: Pete moves from america to sa, how then would he unlock his iphone?

yip, sort it out with AT&T, basically Pete will have to use it on roaming, unless AT&T agree to unlock the phone, which they cant do. All he could do it terminate his contract early and then try to unlock his phone...

iPhone 2.0.1 breaking some carrier unlocks
by Nilay Patel, posted Aug 5th 2008 at 2:19PM

Uh-oh, it look like it's not just the underground unlockers who're having problems with the iPhone 2.0.1 update's revisions to the 3G's baseband -- Vodafone customers who've paid to have their handsets unlocked are starting to report failures to connect to iTunes followed by the appearance of an "0xE8000001" error code. There are also reports from a handful of other carriers, but Voda's selling Steve's baby in 10 countries, so most of the complaints are from its customers. Other than that, there are some isolated reports of brickage, but we've mostly heard good things about 2.0.1, and our iPhones are definitely feeling a little better -- how about you?

found this article, how did these customers pay to have there iphones unlocked?

They don't buy from sites like iGear but from the provider, you can purchase one in Europe and activate it here in SA using iTunes i've heard.

Check with limnos(I think its him). He unlocked his 3g. But the methods are not the same as the 2g if I'm not mistaken

Not limnos, if you look back a few pages, it think in the 60's, he briefly describes it.

Those 2 3G iPhones i unlocked were purchased in Greece from a Vodafone shop for €500 each. I simply unlocked them with iTunes here, using the Vodafone Sim Cards they came with and un-checking the 'Activate phone' option in PwnageTool.

There are quite a few sites that sell the carrier unlocked ones (from the Vodafone shops in Europe) for like €600 a pop...

Only crap thing is you need the Vodafone Sim Card everytime you upgrade so you can Activate the iPhone.

DevTeam are taking awfully long to release the 3G unlock...

Surely it's just a matter of time... Hopefully soon..

Edit.. btw, they weren't mine. I'm still using the 2G model, and to be honest I honestly prefer the 2G for many reasons...

Your best bet for the time being is to TurboSim until DevTeam release crack...

So as predicted by fxit, this morning Swirly shows up in Cydia. Downloaded and setup, all working fine on Cell C, added bonus, the license is valid for 14 days again!
Thx for the help.

Upgrade from 2.0.1 to 2.1 with iTunes 8 and quickpwn

Just finished upgrading the SO's phone from 2.0.1 to 2.1. I found a nice guide on the BigBoss site.

The steps (shortly):
  • installed aptbackup and backed up Cydia app list
  • full backup in iTunes 8
  • shift restore in iTunes to 2.1
  • ran Dev's Team's Windows Quickpwn (This was very smooth)
  • installed aptbackup, ssh and bossprefs in Cydia
  • restored from iTunes
  • let iTunes sync back apps etc.
  • restored Cydia apps using aptbackup (this is one step I am not completely convinced worked 100%)

All in all a very successful job the only pain is the icons get reordered (it really annoys her :D)

Oh on a side note I clocked 220kb/s downloading the quickpwn torrent on Vodacom 3G, not bad!

I noticed this as well..
Maybe an option to use the phone as a modem?
Syncing via bluetooth?

You can use it as a modem, tethering software is available for jailbroken phones.
