Hi,

My apologies if these questions have been answered already but I am unable to go through 53 pages to find my answers.

1. Is there Skype for the iPhone?
2. Can one use Hotmail on the iPhone without having to upgrade to the pay version of Hotmail?
3. Does the GPS work for South Africa, if so how?
4. How can one zoom in on a web page?
5. Can one see how many characters one has typed when smsing?
6. How does one change the screen saver?

Thanks.

Kev

I'll answer 4 & 6...

4. You use 2 fingers and pinch the screen to zoom in, expand fingers to zoom out. (or just double tap screen to do both)

6. iPhone uses a wallpaper as a screensaver just go settings> wallpaper and you can choose from your camera roll, pictures you have synced with iTunes or default iPhone pictures.

Hi and welcome to the forums!

Some quick answers to your questions:

1. Is there Skype for the iPhone?
Kind of.. There used to be Fring for the iPhone which was pretty cool but I dont think they have ported it to the new firmware yet. IM+ is a similar thing though. Check out IM+ for more info

2. Can one use Hotmail on the iPhone without having to upgrade to the pay version of Hotmail?
Aah, now this one's a bit tricky.. It requires downloading a proxy program from Cydia (which you get after 'jailbreaking' your iPhone) called Freepops. I messed around with this method briefly, but gave up after it didn't work after a few tries.. However, you may not have the same bad luck.. If your interested, check out here and here

There is also IzyMail who are a subscription-based service, but offer Hotmail access from the iPhone using a similar proxy method

What you can also do is forward all your Hotmail messages automatically to a GMail account which you can use on the iPhone. Check out this article for more information. The only downside to this is that it replies from the Gmail account which may not be what you want.

3. Does the GPS work for South Africa, if so how?

I can't be 100% sure on that question unfortunately as I dont own a 3G iPhone, but im almost certain (99.9999% sure) that it works!

4. How can one zoom in on a web page?

Simply "pinch" the screen outwards and inwards (with two fingers) to zoom in and out or simply double tap once to zoom in, and again to zoom out.

5. Can one see how many characters one has typed when smsing?
No.

edit: as Limnos pointed out - You can download an application called "BitSMS" (on a jailbroken iPhone) via Cydia which is an SMS application replacement - it also allows you to send SMS's via GPRS if you have BiteSMS credits

6. How does one change the screen saver?

There is no screen saver, but rather an automatic lock which you set the timer for in settings. Do you perhaps mean wallpaper?

I think it would be wise to read up on the iPhone site as well just to get to terms with the phone :)

Need any other help, give us a shout!

And do stick around!

Well I can't get the GPS to work... It knows my current location but when I ask it for direction it doesn't know them anywhere!

No.

With the standard Apple software you can't. Unless you have a jailbroken phone, you can download and use a SMS application called biteSMS. As mentioned previously, this app also allows you to forward messages...

Note that with biteSMS you have the option of either sending an sms from the biteSMS network (Paid Credits needed), or you may select to use your Mobile Carrier.

I'm actually considering purchasing credits for biteSMS as it's only 6 cents per message. Since it uses your data plan, 1MB is equivalent to 1000 160 characterised sms's...

Thanks for this.. I knew about BiteSMS but thought it was solely for sending SMS's via GPRS.. Didn't know about the Mobile Carrier option.

Thx

I use vodacom4me in safari to send SMS's (or if I need too) MMS's for free ;)

How do I change the message tones easily without using paid programs like ToneFXs???

Settings>Sounds

Thing is if you have a mac and garageband you can send any song to your iphone and even remix it if you into that.

There are other methods but this is what I do.

No I know how to do ringtones... It's the message tones I want to change without doing that whole .cfa thing...

The only way i know of is to Open the song/tone in Itunes. Right click "Convert Selection to AIFF" Right click "Show in Explorer" Rename to sms-receivedx.caf (where x is a number from 1 to 6)

Jailbreak the phone, install OpenSSH, SSH into the iPhone, navigate to the /System/Library/Audio/UISounds/ folder and replace the "sms-receivedx.caf" (where x is the same number as you chose above) with the custom .caf ringtone you made.

There could be an easier way, but that's the only one i know of that's free.

Ya I knew of that way, that's just a mission...

ToneFXs works so well, but has a stupid trial period...

lol... Apple should be more flexible with ringtones but you can't blame the tonefx developers for wanting a reward for their work :)
