My head's been spinning trying to follow this thread. Here's the deal, I have a jailbroken Iphone 3G, I've downloaded the itunes 8.2, and the the 3.0 GM.... I've been reading about issues regarding MMS & Tethering, does this also apply to the 3G or is this only affecting 2G users?

Someone, anyone... let me out of my misery and tell me whether I should do the restore to 3.0 :)

Thanks guys,

M

Thanks guys,

Firstly if you have an unlocked (e.g. bought here in SA) 3G then yes, go for it.

Just shift-update to the 3.0 GM (shift-restore not sure if it works as nice)

Regarding MMS and Tethering, I think roland.theron's .IPCC file will enable it for you. It is disabled by default.

Also, they are not an issue for 2G users, because MMS and Tethering is unavailable for 2G users :p (Apple only decided to include it for 3G + )

Link was posted a few posts back by morkhans for the .ipcc files. AFAIK you just shift-restore or shift-update to apply them.

Enjoy

I was thinking:

If iTunes can install a .ipcc file to the iPhone (without a jailbreak or anthing), couldn't this method be used to modify system files (and even jailbreak) using iTunes itself?

The OS (file system) partition is usually otherwise unaccessible any other way...

Obviously the gurus would need to find out where the code is (in the iTunes binary , or the actuall .ipcc file [i would suspect iTunes binary] ) which instructs iTunes to transfer the .ipcc file to the proper directory...

And once we find this, we can edit it / modify the instructions in order to replace other system files (not just .ipcc files) which could even potentially jailbreak the device..

Even if it wasn't to jailbreak the device and just replace some files on the system partition which are only accessible otherwise via Jailbreaking...

From what I understand, the newer iTunes versions (8.2 + ) cannot install .ipcc files anymore, but maybe a slightly older version which can install .ipcc's (i.e. pre 8.2 iTunes) can be modified to do this!!

Was just thinking & thought i'd share this with you guys..

What you gurus think?

well, not really

itunes isn't modifying the system files, the iphone is, the iphone will have a running sync service, that allows itunes to submit an ipcc to the phone, the phone then applies the ipcc to it's network settings

essentially it's a channel to the phone created by apple for ipcc settings only

so not quite a way of modifying system files etc.

^^^ I don't think :) I just do! Will wait until Wednesday next week and then bitch to VC too sort out there MMS issue (which does not exist according to them :p )

yeah probably.. but would still be cool exploiting it ..somehow....some way.. :D

With regards to MMS on a locally bought/contract 3G running 3.0GM (default settings ie no ipcc update)

1. MMS works using these settings:

APN mms.vodacom.net
MMSC http://mmsc.vodacom4me.co.za
MMSC Proxy 196.006.128.013:8080

2. MMS works when receiving/sending vodacom to vodacom
3. MMS from other networks sometimes come through sometimes not. (sending usually works)
4. switching off 3G helps some users.
5. having a SIM password seems to be a problem. (but only sometimes)

Tethering: can't get this to work at all (although haven't tried Roland's ipcc files yet)

all I can say is that VC had better get it's arse into gear. I see a storm brewing for thursday the 17th...

MTN: both tethering and MMS seem to work out the box?

MTN and OS3.0 GM

DO NOT UPLOAD ANY IPCC TO GET THIS TO WORK!

it works out of the box, without ipcc of any kind, configure the settings manually

mmsc must have http:// prefix
mms proxy must have :8080 suffix
mms user and password must be blank - fxit pls update this on the first post?

voilla!

I have an iPhone 3G bought from Vodacom. I use it with an MTN SIM though.

I've never jailbroken it - Have the 3.0 GM but haven't installed it.

Anything I should worry about ?

nothing to worry about, did one yesterday, works like a charm

you just won't have tethering

do the restore, then restore from backup, then go to settings -> general ->network -> cellular data network

cellular data apn: internet
mms: (as per my post on the previous page)

OS 3.0 and mms on Vodacom

so here's the bummer....

turns out, our meddling with ipcc files has come back to bit us in the @ss...

if you've had a custom ipcc during all the 3.0 beta testing, you can now choose if you want mms or 3G reception, not both.. fun eh?

figured out that if you do a clean restore of 3.0 to your 3G, activate the phone, enter the mms settings manually under settings, and then restart the phone, your mms works fine over 3G

now I can't restore my backup, because the carrier settings will be overwritten again... joy

there is a possible fix... anyone with a jailbroken 3G on 2.xxx please give me a shout, I need you to download your ipcc from the phone and send it to me so I can work off the original....

...tic toc tic toc...

Isn't there a way to download the ipcc file directly from apple? I recall a curl command floating around in this thread.

yup, for other networks, but for some reason Vodafone_za isn't in there, it's only on the phone itself...
